Chapter 2 of 4
Chapter 2: A Theft in the Rain
1.3k words
Raindrops pelted Noah’s face like tiny, icy needles. Mud clung to his bare shins, heavy and freezing in the gray morning. Under his feet, the grass had long since turned into a swamp of brown sludge, churned up by dozens of desperate boys chasing a dream that was rapidly slipping away.
His torn registration papers lay melting in a puddle near his worn-out boots. They were the only proof that he had spent the last three years training until his lungs burned. Now, they were just wet trash, discarded by a man who didn't even bother to look him in the eye.
Blue holographic text suddenly hovered in his vision, unaffected by the pouring storm. It was a clean, sharp contrast to the grey misery of the Accra trials. Bright, neon-blue letters danced before his eyes, defying the laws of physics.

Noah stared at the glowing prompt, his breath catching in his throat. He wondered if the physical exhaustion and the crushing despair had finally driven him mad. No one else on the pitch seemed to notice the glowing blue light illuminating his face.
"Please, Mr. Boateng," Noah whispered, his voice cracking but holding a desperate strength.
"Just five minutes," he begged, stepping closer to the stout man who held the keys to his future. "Put me in the scrimmage. If I fail, I'll walk away and never touch a football again. I just need one chance."
Charles Boateng sneered, flicking a stray raindrop off his expensive leather jacket. He looked at Noah as if the seventeen-year-old were a stray dog begging for scraps at a local food stall. To him, Noah was just another nameless face from the slums of Accra, a talentless dreamer with no money to grease the palms of the scouts.
"You don't know when to quit, do you?" a mocking voice chimed in from behind the chief scout.
Kwesi Appiah stepped forward, spinning a muddy ball on his index finger. He was the scout's nephew, the golden boy of the academy, wearing pristine Nike boots that didn't have a single tear. His hair was perfectly styled, and his face held the smug arrogance of someone who had never had to struggle for a single thing in his life.
"Let him play, Uncle," Kwesi laughed, his eyes glinting with cruel amusement. "It’s been a boring morning anyway. I want to show everyone what happens to dreamers who don't belong here. It'll be a good warm-up for me."
Noah kept his gaze lowered, but his mind was racing. He didn't care about the mockery. All he cared about was the glowing blue screen that had suddenly shifted, scanning the players on the field.
*Target locked,* a cold, electronic voice echoed inside his head.
[SCANNING TARGET: KWESI APPIAH]
[POSITION: WINGER / ATTACKING MIDFIELDER]
[KEY ATTRIBUTE DETECTED: EXPLOSIVE BURST (RATING: 85 - GRADE A)]
[WARNING: PHYSICAL CONTACT REQUIRED TO INITIATE SYSTEM TRANSFER.]
Eighty-five. That was an incredible rating for a local academy player. It explained how Kwesi bypassed defenders as if they were standing still. If Noah could get his hands on that kind of speed, everything would change.
"Fine," Charles Boateng spat, waving a hand dismissively toward the waterlogged pitch. "Five minutes. You play for the bibs. If you lose the ball once, you're off. And I'll make sure you never step foot near a professional trial again."
Noah nodded, his heart hammering against his ribs. He jogged onto the pitch, the heavy mud sucking at his worn-out boots. The soles of his cleats were so worn down that he could feel every pebble through the thin rubber, but he ignored the discomfort.
---
Heavy rain blurred the boundaries of the field. Other trialists looked at Noah with a mix of pity and annoyance.
They were tired, wet, and desperate themselves, and the last thing they wanted was a liability on their team when European scouts were watching from the covered stands.
"Pass the ball!" one of the bibbed players screamed as the scrimmage resumed.
Positioning himself on the left flank, Noah kept his eyes glued to Kwesi, who was playing as the opposing right winger. He could feel the eyes of the other coaches on him, expecting him to trip over his own feet.
Kwesi moved with effortless grace despite the soggy turf. His acceleration was terrifying.
He received a pass, flicked it past a defender, and was five yards away before the defender could even turn. His movement was fluid, powerful, and utterly dominant.
*I need to get close,* Noah thought, his teeth gritted. *Just one touch. One tackle. That's all the system needs.*
Sprinting toward Kwesi, he tried to close the gap. But his current body was sluggish, his muscles heavy and slow from years of poor nutrition and inadequate training. He felt like he was running through wet cement while Kwesi was gliding over ice.
"Look at him run!" someone laughed from the sidelines. "He looks like a turtle in the mud!"
Ignoring the jeers, Noah kept his eyes locked onto the glowing blue marker hovering over Kwesi's head. The system was tracking him, a digital reticle pulsing with every stride Kwesi took.

[DISTANCE TOO GREAT. CLOSE THE GAP TO INITIALIZE PHYSICAL EXTRACTION.]
A wet leather ball was switched to Noah's side. A teammate reluctantly rolled a heavy, water-logged pass toward him. A short pass died in a thick patch of mud, stopping dead.
Controlling the ball with his chest, Noah tried to bring it down, but his touch was heavy. The ball bounced two yards away from him, spinning helplessly in a puddle.
"My ball!" Kwesi roared, smelling blood in the water.
Charging like a cheetah, Kwesi kicked up massive sprays of muddy water. The explosive power in his legs was visible in the way his quadriceps tensed. He wanted to make an example of Noah, to show his uncle that he was the undisputed king of this pitch.
Standing his ground, Noah didn't try to run. Instead, he planted his left foot firmly into the mud and shielded the ball with his back, bracing for the impact. He knew he couldn't outrun Kwesi, but he could use his body as a shield.
Intent on humiliation, Kwesi didn't care about the ball. He launched himself into a brutal, reckless slide tackle.
---
Pain exploded in Noah's right shin.
Steel studs crashed directly into his leg, sending both of them tumbling into the freezing mud. A violent impact shattered his concentration, and the sound of shinguards cracking echoed across the quiet pitch.
Gasping for air, Noah slid across the wet grass, his lungs burning. He felt the cold mud seep into his jersey, a raw sting spreading across his thigh. But amidst the blinding pain, a digital chime echoed in his skull, drowning out the sound of the wind.

[TRANSFERRING TRAIT TO HOST...]
Suddenly, the sharp pain in his shin vanished, replaced by a searing, liquid heat. It was an intense, overwhelming sensation that made his eyes widen.
It felt as if boiling oil was being injected directly into his calves.
His leg muscles began to twitch violently beneath his skin. Muscle fibers tore apart and knit back together at a microscopic, impossible speed. He could feel the tendons tightening, the fascia expanding, and the blood vessels dilating to accommodate a massive influx of power.
He gasped, arching his back as the sheer power re-aligned his physical anatomy. It was painful, yet incredibly exhilarating. He could feel the raw potential coiling inside his legs, waiting to be unleashed.
"Get up, you weakling," Kwesi sneered, standing over him and wiping mud from his own face. "You couldn't even handle a simple challenge. Go back to the slums."
Answering with silence, Noah slowly pushed himself up from the ground, his fingers digging into the wet grass.
His legs felt entirely different. They felt lighter, packed with coiled springs that wanted to unleash at any second. A heavy, sluggish feeling that had plagued him his entire life had vanished.
He took a deep breath, the cold rain washing the mud from his face. The despair that had weighed him down for months was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve.
He looked at Kwesi, then down at his own legs. His digital interface updated in real-time.
[TRANSFER COMPLETE.]
[HOST PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTE UPDATED: EXPLOSIVE BURST (85).]
[CURRENT RANK: F-GRADE (POTENTIAL: UNLIMITED)]
Realizing with absolute certainty that he could literally steal his way to the top of the footballing world, Noah smiled. He didn't need their academies, their agents, or their approval. He just needed their skills.
He walked back to his position, his every step feeling springier, sharper, and incredibly powerful. The mud beneath his boots no longer felt like a trap; it felt like a launchpad.
Before Noah can test his new speed, Charles Boateng locks eyes with him and sneers, "You have exactly one possession to change my mind, or I'll personally blacklist you from every academy in West Africa."
