Chapter 9 of 10

Corrupting the Core

1.1k words

The Apex Frame hung against the violet, simulated sky, a monstrosity of obsidian and bioluminescent tendrils. Its exposed bio-core pulsed with a sickly green light, mirroring the throb in Rui’s own spine. He felt it, a faint, burrowing echo. “Behold, Rui,” Olan’s voice, distorted and amplified, resonated through the arena. It was laced with a chilling, triumphal edge. “The pinnacle. The next stage of true power.” The Apex Frame descended, its movements impossibly fluid, a predator dropping from the heavens. Jinra’s grip on the controls, still shared by Rui’s Qi, tightened. “He’s going to attack,” she rasped, her voice tight with foreboding. “Naturally,” Rui murmured, settling deeper into the shared cockpit. His senses stretched, bracing for a barrage. He directed Jinra’s mech to jink right, a sudden burst of thrust intended to throw off any targeting system. The Apex Frame moved before they did. Its left arm, ending in a five-pronged plasma claw, swept out with blinding speed, intercepting their trajectory. The air screamed as their mech was slapped aside, sending sparks showering across the cockpit display. Rui’s head snapped back, his Qi rippling in protest. “Impossible!” Jinra cried, wrestling the controls, trying to stabilize their spin. “His targeting… it’s perfect! He knew where we’d go!” “It’s not targeting, child,” Olan’s voice boomed, thick with cruel amusement. “It’s *anticipation*. The parasite in your spine, Rui, it isn’t merely a feed-line. It’s a quantum anchor, a conduit to your very will. Every ripple of intent, every nascent thought of action… it sings directly to me. To the Apex. Your ancient arts, your so-called ‘unpredictability,’ are an open book.” He had used the previous fights to test his flesh against the neural feedback. Yet Olan had studied him in parallel, using Rui’s own reflexes as the cipher. He pushed Jinra’s mech forward, a feint, then ordered a hard pivot and a charged particle blast from the shoulder cannon. The maneuvers were executed with the precision of a master choreographer, fluid and deadly. But the Apex Frame was already there. Its right leg swung, a blur of obsidian, kicking their mech’s particle blast off course before it even fully formed. The impact sent a concussive wave through their frame, shaking the very bones of the simulated environment. Rui felt the ghost of a tremor in his marrow, a faint, triumphant vibration. “Pathetic, Sima Rui,” Olan sneered. “You cling to dusty scrolls and forgotten forms. This is evolution. This is destiny. Your pure-strain body, your vibrant Qi… they were merely the raw materials for something truly grand.” The Apex Frame began to glow, its internal tendrils pulsating with an aggressive, scarlet light. “And now, for the grand finale. It’s time to harvest.” A searing, agonizing bolt of pain exploded in Rui’s lower spine. It wasn’t a mere ache, but a violent, invasive command, a synthetic shackle snapping into place. His pure Qi, which had been flowing so freely, so gloriously, seized. It felt like being ripped apart from the inside, his meridians constricting, his every muscle locking. Jinra’s mech, under his paralyzed control, shuddered to a halt. Its systems flickered, mirroring Rui’s internal collapse. “Rui! What’s happening? I can’t move! Your Qi… it’s gone!” Her voice was raw with terror. Rui couldn’t answer. Nerve fibers charred under synthetic venom. He felt the organism tightening, *feeding*, drawing every last drop of his vital breath, readying the final extraction. His vision swam. He was trapped, utterly immobile, a puppet on Olan’s insidious strings. Olan’s booming laughter echoed. “Witness the end, Grandmaster! The end of your arrogance, the end of your ancient fables! Your flesh is weak, Rui! It always was! Now, you will be a conduit. A husk. The Apex Frame hung above them, its talons glowing with an ominous charge, poised to deliver the final blow. “Any last, defiant words?” Rui, though wracked with torment, forced his lips into a slow, deliberate smile. It was a terrifying sight, a man grinning while being vivisected from within. A choked, rasping sound emerged from his throat, a low, guttural chuckle that grew into a full, throaty laugh. It was the laugh of a madman, or a god. “Last words?” Rui’s voice, though strained, held an unnerving clarity. “Olan, you fool. Do you truly believe that all this time, all these ‘victories’ you so smugly facilitated, were merely to *feed* your pet?” His eyes, though dulled by the agony, held a glint of fierce, calculated triumph. “You said it yourself. A quantum link. A conduit. It goes both ways.” Jinra stared, blood draining from her lips as comprehension broke through. “Every drop of Qi I channeled, every surge, every blast,” Rui continued, his voice rising, battling through the creature's chokehold. “I fed it. Yes. But not *pure* Qi. Not the pristine essence you craved for your pathetic weapon. No, Olan. I gorged your little worm on… *corruption*.” The agony in his spine intensified a thousandfold. Rui’s body arched, muscles spasming uncontrollably. But his smile never wavered. “The Qi of defiance,” he spat, a thin line of blood appearing at the corner of his mouth. “The Qi of resentment. The Qi of absolute, unyielding contempt for your twisted vision. I have been poisoning it, Olan. Every single match. Every single time it fed. And now…” A guttural roar ripped from Rui’s chest, a sound that seemed to tear the very fabric of the simulated air. He focused all his remaining will, not on fighting the worm, but on *igniting* the toxic, volatile Qi he had deliberately packed into its core. It was a self-destruct mechanism of compressed cultivation. Heat burst along his lumbar vertebrae, shearing tissue. The foreign organism convulsed, its quantum tether burning out in a silent rupture that ripped through his flesh. His vision turned white, then black, then burst into a kaleidoscope of unbearable suffering. His body seized, then went utterly slack. He was no longer in Jinra’s cockpit, no longer anchored to the ground. He felt weightless within the cockpit harness, the agony now a distant echo, replaced by an intoxicating surge of unburdened power. His pure Qi, free from its physical shackle, roared through his meridians, vibrant and boundless. His eyes snapped open. They burned with an intense, golden light, piercing the simulated gloom. He felt the untamed power thrumming in his core, absolute and sharp. The Apex Frame, still poised to strike, seemed insignificant beneath him. He raised his hand, not in a martial gesture, but in a silent, cosmic command. His voice, now resonating with an unearthly power that transcended the arena’s speakers, echoed through the vast expanse. “Olan,” Sima Rui declared, his eyes blazing like twin suns. “Witness a true God.”
