Chapter 1 of 10
The Flesh Glitch

Sima Rui plummeted through an azure void, a scream tearing itself from his throat, not of fear, but of profound bewilderment. His last memory was the serene silence of the Jade Dragon Peak, the Qi within him thrumming like a cosmic tide. Now, a dizzying wind roared past, a strange, metallic tang coating his tongue. He flailed, not with the controlled grace of a Grandmaster, but with the clumsy terror of a newborn. His eyes tore open upon a bizarre vista: a colossal, shimmering dome stretching to a synthetic horizon, studded with razor-edged, angular towers that defied the laws of earth and stone.
His consciousness, a tempest of ancient wisdom, warred with the primal shock of his new physical form. This body… it was not his own. Gone was the aged, hardened vessel, tempered by centuries of Daoist cultivation. This new shell felt unnaturally light, yet vibrant, every sinew and bone radiating an unfamiliar, potent vigor. A *pure-strain* body, the fragmented, alien memories whispered, unmodified, untouched. He flexed his fingers, the intricate bone structure beneath the skin a marvel of natural design. A perfect vessel, even if the Qi, his lifeblood, felt like a faint echo in a vast, empty cavern.
The ground, a mosaic of fractured durasteel and crimson-stained plasteel, rushed up. Rui, despite his disorientation, instinctively curled, channeling what little spiritual essence remained to absorb the impact. He hit with a jarring crunch, rolling twice before springing to his feet, muscles coiling like a viper. His gaze swept the desolation, a ruined metropolis locked in an eternal twilight. He was alone, utterly, terrifyingly alone, in a place that defied all understanding.
Then, a low hum. A hulking, bipedal walker, all sharp angles and dull grey plating, materialized from behind a toppled spire of what appeared to be shattered residential blocks. Its single, cyclopean optical sensor glowed a malevolent amber. It moved with a clumsy, mechanical grace, its heavy strides shaking the simulated ground. A low-tier Omni-Frame, the strange, new memories supplied, a ‘Thresher-Class’ combat drone, deployed for initial engagement.
Rui watched it, a flicker of ancestral pride igniting in his breast. A mere metal contraption. He had faced demonic beasts and corrupt cultivators whose powers warped reality itself. This was nothing. He settled into a low, defensive stance, a forgotten impulse guiding his limbs. The Tai Chi Cloud-Hand Reversal, a subtle, flowing form designed to turn an opponent’s strength against them.
The Omni-Frame halted, its mechanical arm whirring as it snapped into position. A crimson muzzle flared, followed by a searing white-hot spear of pure plasma. It tore through the air with a shriek, aimed directly at his chest. A lethal blow against an unarmored, un-augmented target.
Rui stood firm. He did not dodge. He stepped *into* the blast. The raw heat blistered his skin, the energy threatening to atomize him. But his hands, guided by muscle memory deeper than any transmigrated soul, moved. They traced elegant, circular patterns in the air, a dance of yielding and redirecting. The plasma, a concentrated spear of destruction, met the subtle, yielding force of the Cloud-Hand. It swirled in a furious circle, then, with a silent redirection, it veered.
The plasma beam, now a hungry, inverted arrow, shot back. It struck the Thresher-Class Omni-Frame squarely in its optical sensor. The automaton buckled, a guttural shriek of overloaded circuits tearing from its metallic throat. Its grey plating glowed cherry-red, then white, before erupting in a silent, dazzling explosion of superheated vapor and shrapnel. Where the mech had stood, only a rapidly dissipating cloud of ionized particles remained. The air hummed with scorched ozone and burning capacitors.
Silence descended once more, thick and disbelieving. The stadium, a sprawling, unseen entity, had gone quiet. For a moment, even the artificial wind died away. Then, a cacophony erupted. Billions of simultaneous gasps, shouts, and digital roars echoed through the broadcast network, relayed across every star-system of the Veyr Dominion. A ‘meat-bag’ had just vaporized a battle mech, barehanded, by redirecting its own fire. The feat shattered the spectators' assumptions.
A holographic screen flickered into existence before Rui, displaying a face. An elderly man, his features etched with an expression of benevolent wisdom, a smile playing on his lips. His eyes, however, held a cold, calculating gleam. He wore ornate, flowing robes that seemed out of place in this brutal landscape.
“An… unexpected display, young man,” the elder’s voice, rich and resonant, filled the virtual arena. “Most impressive. You are a… pure-strain, are you not? Such an anomaly is rare. My name is Gen-Wright Olan. I oversee the development of emerging talents within the Synapse Grid. Your performance has… captured my attention.”
Rui scoffed, wiping a trickle of sweat from his brow. His pride, though shaken by the transmigration, remained intact, an unyielding pillar. “Emerging talents? I am Sima Rui, Grandmaster of the Azure Cloud Sect. I do not ‘emerge’ for anyone. And what is this… ‘Synapse Grid’? This place is a crude illusion.”
Olan’s smile widened, a predatory glint in his eyes. “Indeed. A rather convincing illusion, wouldn’t you agree? And a very lucrative one. Your… unique talents would be wasted outside the competitive circuits. Compete, Grandmaster Rui. Prove your flesh is superior to our alloys. I will grant you full Dominion citizenship, access to the highest echelons of our society. All I ask is that you continue to entertain us.”
Entertain them? The thought rankled. But Olan’s words had touched a raw nerve. Prove his flesh was superior. That, Rui could understand. That, he *would* do. He had lost his Qi, his sect, his world. But his martial prowess, his very being, was defined by the supremacy of the cultivated spirit over crude matter. He would show them.
“Citizenship?” Rui sneered, though the concept was utterly alien to him. “I accept your… proposal. I will enter your ‘Synapse Grid’. And I will prove, beyond all doubt, that your machines are nothing more than glorified toys before the true power of the human spirit.”
A low, guttural rumble shook the very foundations of the ruined city. The simulated sky, previously a placid azure, darkened. A colossal shadow fell over the arena. Rui looked up, his eyes narrowing. From the digital heavens, a monstrosity descended. It was an Omni-Frame, but unlike the clumsy Thresher, this one was a titan of chrome and obsidian, bristling with an arsenal of weapons that made the previous mech look like a child’s plaything. Its chassis was sleek, predatory, custom-built for maximum destruction. A single, blazing red eye ignited on its faceplate, fixating on Rui with an almost sentient malevolence.
A cold, clear voice, synthesized yet imbued with chilling authority, echoed through the stadium. “An unranked glitch. I will personally excise this anomaly.” The ground buckled beneath Rui's feet as the enormous titan touched down, its immense weight sending cracks spiderwebbing across the durasteel. Within the reinforced cockpit, the Dominion's apex pilot prepped her primary weapons array.
