Chapter 10 of 10
Fist of the New Antiquity
1.1k words
The jade blade, a searing arc of pure Qi, screamed through the air, aimed directly at Bao Quan’s heart. Varian Drax moved with a predator’s grace, his crimson robes swirling, his eyes burning with the cold fire of a zealot. Bao Quan didn't dodge. Instead, he met the strike with a palm, not deflecting, but absorbing, his stance rooted like an old mountain. The impact shuddered through him, the foreign momentum tearing at his meridians, but Bao Quan held firm, his own Qi, though vastly diminished from his former life, a steady anchor.
“Crude,” Bao Quan said, his voice flat. “Is this the peak of your Crimson Blade’s wisdom now? To simply rip and tear?”
Drax sneered, twisting the blade, trying to gut him. “It is efficient. Your ‘new path’ is a slow death. This world is a resource, Unbroken Fist. Nothing more.”
Bao Quan leveraged the force, spinning Drax around him, then flung him back towards the towering transmission mast. Drax slammed into an operator station, sparks showering as circuit boards ruptured. He recovered instantly, a snarl distorting his face. “Fool! You still hold back. This world has softened you!”
“Perhaps,” Bao Quan conceded, his gaze tracking the intricate circuitry of the mast, the pulsing indicator lamps, the humming resonance that mirrored the ancient relics in Elder Tong’s backroom. “Or perhaps I have learned that brute force is not always the answer.”
He stepped forward. Drax met him stroke for stroke. Green daggers manifested and dissolved across Drax's knuckles, striking with vicious intent, each blow laced with the Crimson Blade's lethal cadence. Bao Quan deflected with minimal clearance, seeking not to shatter, but to redirect. He saw the flaws in Drax’s style, the reliance on raw power, the lack of adaptation.
“Lin Mei,” Bao Quan’s voice was calm, projected through the comms. He landed a parry that sent Drax stumbling, then pressed the attack, driving him further from the primary copper trunklines. “The array. It siphons Qi through a focal point. How do I adjust its frequency?”
From a lower level, amidst the clang of Kaito’s desperate battle against the Observers’ guards, Lin Mei’s voice crackled, edged with urgency. “The core oscillator! It’s designed to resonate with specific Qi signatures. If you introduce your own Qi—not to overload, but to match, to harmonize with its frequency—you can steady the current. Think of it like tuning a cello string, not smashing the bridge!”
“Harmonize,” Bao Quan repeated. In the Azure Firmament, he had always hammered his will onto the world. His past self’s message, about merging Qi with science, echoed in his mind. This was the moment.
Drax lunged, two emerald edges converging on Bao Quan’s throat. Bao Quan swayed back half an inch, allowing the steel-hard light to slice empty air. He locked both hands onto Drax’s forearms. “You only know how to ruin things. I build.”
He shoved, driving Drax back against the structural pylons. Drax thrashed, emerald arcs scouring the metal casing, but Bao Quan held his ground. He mapped the dense network of busbars and cooling lines—a rigid geometric contrast to human meridians, yet governed by the same imperative: guiding a current.
“The main leads, Bao Quan!” Lin Mei shouted over the comms. “There’s a power regulation grid beneath the central resonator. Guide your Qi there! Keep the feed smooth!”
Bao Quan slammed Drax against the console, holding him momentarily pinned. His gaze locked onto the glowing junction Lin Mei had named. It pulsed irregularly, shuddering as if ready to blow apart. He released Drax, who staggered back, roaring with fury. Bao Quan ignored him. He extended his hand, not clenching a fist, but spreading his palm, the very gesture of offering.
He pressed his palm to the junction, feeding his breath into the terminals in a slow, metered tide. Heat scorched his skin. Solder melted, popping under the strain of alien intent, but Bao Quan held steady. Following Lin Mei’s technical readouts, he guided the wild pulse until the raw spiritual charge leaking from the city’s stolen antiques shifted from a chaotic surge into an orderly circuit.
Drax, seeing his opening, charged, his eyes ablaze. “Die, Unbroken Fist! This world will burn, and you with it!”
As Drax slashed downward, Bao Quan pivoted. He reached back toward the framework. Feeling the harmonic hum vibrating through the steel, he gave a sharp twist of his wrist, pulling the raw ancestral Qi out of Drax’s reach and rerouting the feed directly into the grounding rod.
The glowing edge in Drax’s grip sputtered and winked out. Drax let out a sharp, choked gasp. His spiritual reservoir, cut off from the rig, emptied instantly. He stumbled backward onto his heels, the cold fire dying in his irises. The conduit to the heavens slammed shut, severed cleanly by Bao Quan’s calibration.
Bao Quan stepped back, his chest heaving, his own Qi depleted but steady. The steel spire, violent only seconds before, settled into a quiet hum. Blue diodes blinked across the panels in rhythm, the air clearing of sulfur and ozone.
Lin Mei’s voice, now filled with awe, came over the comms. “It’s… stable! Bao Quan, you didn’t just stop it. You *tamed* it. It’s a functional engine! Gathering voltage without blowing the fuses!”
Drax glared at Bao Quan, a pathetic shadow of his former menace. “You… you severed me! I am nothing! You have doomed us all to stagnation!”
“You chose annihilation,” Bao Quan replied, his voice calm. “I chose a new path. For both worlds.”
Hours later, the rooftop was secured. Kaito, his knuckles split and his coat torn, stood beside Bao Quan and Lin Mei as medical technicians wheeled Anya onto the platform beside the stabilized machinery.
Bao Quan aligned his palms above Anya, following Lin Mei’s biometric monitors as he guided a thin ribbon of refined Qi toward the girl's chest. Pale light washed across her collarbones. Lin Mei tracked the screen readouts: cellular regeneration rates climbed, metabolic markers stabilized, and the cellular degradation plateaued.
Anya’s eyelids fluttered open. Her mouth twitched upward. “Kaito… it doesn’t hurt.”
Kaito, his stoic facade crumbling, knelt beside his sister, tears streaming down his face. “Anya…”
Bao Quan watched, a deep satisfaction settling in his core. This was it. Not just fighting, but healing. Not just power, but purpose.
He turned to Lin Mei, who stood beside him, her hand instinctively reaching for his. The spire stood silhouetted against the neon glare of Victoria Harbour. Grounded in copper, illuminated by silicon, and tempered by ancient breath, the machine hummed quietly into the night. Their journey had just truly begun, with the universe’s ancient secrets now whispering through modern circuits, waiting for discovery.
