Chapter 2 of 3
Chapter 2: The First Legionnaire
1.2k words
Chilling words. Long Hao stared at the black orb, a smooth, obsidian sphere pulsing with faint, malevolent light. It felt cold against his palm, heavier than its size suggested, a core of compressed dread. His mind reeled from the System's prompt: 'Loot Acquired: Soul Essence. Use to create minion.'
Minion. The word twisted in his gut. He was a survivor, not a necromancer from some fantasy tale. Yet, the memory of his dying Earth, the slow, agonizing decay, surged back. Powerlessness. That was the true horror.
Survival instinct screamed louder than revulsion. He had nothing here, impaled by a beast's horn mere moments ago, now resurrected. This orb, this 'System', was his only lead, his only potential weapon.
Hesitantly, he lifted the orb. A faint hum vibrated through his bones, a low thrumming that seemed to resonate with his very core. The System's interface flickered, a translucent overlay appearing directly in his vision: 'Initiate Minion Creation? Y/N'.
Nodding slowly, a silent 'Yes', Long Hao focused. The orb pulsed brighter, a sickly green aura beginning to seep from its surface. It felt like a liquid shadow in his hand, malleable, yet resistant.
'Focus intent. Visualize form,' the System advised, its text appearing directly in his mind, not just on the interface. A chilling voice, dispassionate and ancient.
He thought of the demon beast he'd killed, the one that had ended his life on this world. A hulking, grotesque form. No. Too complex. Too large. He needed something simple, efficient.
His mind conjured bone. Pure, stark bone. A basic human skeleton, but stronger, more resilient. A soldier, stripped of flesh and weakness, a pure vessel of command. He imagined joints clicking, a rigid posture, empty eye sockets. He poured his will, his desperate need for control, into the orb.
The obsidian sphere began to stretch, to warp. It elongated, a dark liquid twisting and hardening. First, a leg, forming with unnatural speed, joint by joint. Then a pelvis, a ribcage expanding from the liquid mass. A spine snaked upwards, vertebrae locking into place with soft, grinding sounds that only he seemed to hear.
Disgust warred with a morbid fascination. This was unnatural, an affront to everything he knew. Yet, the power, the sheer *act* of creation, held him rapt. He felt like a grotesque sculptor, breathing corrupted life into inert matter.
Finally, a skull formed, hollowed eye sockets staring blankly ahead. No jaw moved, no flesh covered the stark bone. The entire process took less than a minute, leaving behind a standing, skeletal figure, roughly his height, its form crude, but undeniably functional.
It stood before him, emanating a faint, cool aura. Its vacant eye sockets, glowing with a dim, green light, fixed on him. Not with intelligence, but with an eerie, unswerving loyalty. A primal surge of power washed over Long Hao. Control. Absolute, unquestioning control.
Terror, a cold knot in his stomach, momentarily eclipsed. In its place, a nascent, chilling hope of survival bloomed. He wasn't helpless. He wasn't alone. He had an army, even if it was only one, just beginning.
'Minion Created: Bone Soldier (Tier 1). Loyalty: Absolute,' the System confirmed. 'Attribute Bonus: Commander Aura (Tier 0). Minions under your command gain a minor combat effectiveness boost.'
Bone Soldier. He liked the name. It was simple, direct. He reached out, a flicker of trepidation, and touched the skeleton's arm. The bone felt smooth, hard, cold. He felt a connection, a faint thread of will extending from him to the construct.
'Move,' he thought, and the Bone Soldier took a stiff, deliberate step forward. 'Stop.' It froze instantly. 'Raise arm.' A bony limb lifted, joints clicking like ancient gears. It was perfect obedience.
This was it. His first step into this new, brutal world. He had died, yes, but he had also been reborn, granted a power that defied life itself. The cultivation world, with its grand dao and revered sects, would not know what hit it.
His gaze swept the desolate battlefield. Corpses of strange beasts, some humanoid figures in tattered robes, lay strewn across the ground. More potential. More power. He could see it now, the path laid out before him, stark and terrifying.
'Scan surroundings for immediate threats,' Long Hao commanded, a thought, not a spoken word, directed at the System. The interface flickered, a faint map appearing, outlining the immediate forest area. No red markers. Not yet.
He had to move. This clearing was exposed. He needed shelter, a place to gather his thoughts, to understand this new existence. The Bone Soldier stood silently by his side, an unfeeling sentinel, his first guardian.
Walking forward, his limp still pronounced from the residual injury even after his 'resurrection', Long Hao felt a strange lightness. The weight of Earth's end, the crushing despair, was still there, but now, a counter-force had emerged. A drive. A purpose. He would not be powerless again.
The forest edge beckoned, dark and mysterious. He pushed through tangled undergrowth, the Bone Soldier following a step behind him, its movements stiff but tireless. Every snapped twig, every rustle of leaves, heightened his senses. He was prey, but now, he had a tooth and claw of his own.
Hours passed. He navigated by instinct, avoiding dense thickets, seeking higher ground. The sun, a strange, orange orb in the alien sky, began its descent. The air grew cooler, carrying the scent of damp earth and unknown flora.
He needed to eat, to drink. His human needs were stark reminders of his fragile mortality, even with his new power. The Bone Soldier, of course, felt no hunger, no thirst. It was a stark contrast.
As twilight deepened, painting the sky in hues of deep violet and fading orange, Long Hao decided to make camp under the overhang of a massive, gnarled tree. He instructed the Bone Soldier to stand guard, its green eye-lights piercing the gloom.
He sat, his back against the rough bark, the silence of the forest pressing in. This world was magnificent, terrifying, and utterly unforgiving. He had to be more unforgiving.
Focusing on the System, Long Hao brought up the interface again. He needed to understand its full capabilities, his own status. 'User: Long Hao. Class: Necromancer (Awakened). Core Abilities: Soul Harvest, Minion Creation, Undead Command.'
It was all so clinical, so cold. Yet, it was his reality. He examined Soul Harvest: 'Absorb Soul Essence from recently deceased beings.' Minion Creation: 'Utilize Soul Essence to manifest undead minions.' Undead Command: 'Exert absolute control over created undead.'
Simple. Brutal. Effective. This was the foundation of his new power. This was how he would survive. He would take the dead and make them his soldiers. He would build an army from the fallen.
A guttural roar echoed from the nearby forest, sending a ripple through the twilight air. Long Hao’s head snapped up, eyes darting. Through the trees, a monstrous, three-headed wolf, its fur matted with blood and eyes glowing with malevolent intent, locked its predatory gaze onto Long Hao and his nascent guardian. The system flashed: 'Threat Detected: Infernal Alpha. Recommended Action: Engage.'
