Chapter 8 of 10
Kitchen Knives and Crystal Spiders

The emergency descent hatch hissed as stale, metallic air leaked into the Conclave's cool passage. Stellan slipped through, the iron slab thudding shut behind him and cutting off the upper levels. A dull violet sheen coated the downward slope, leaking from the unshielded depths. The air grew thick, humid, carrying the scent of damp stone and something acrid, like ozone. He activated a small, battered glow-lamp from his belt, its beam weak against the vastness of the tunnel.
His old adventuring instincts, dulled by years of mundane chopping and simmering, sharpened with alarming speed. The ground beneath his worn boots was uneven, slick with fine, glassy dust. Ahead, the tunnel split into three smaller passages, each one a potential trap. He paused, closing his eyes, letting the phantom ache in his scarred forearm guide him. It was the same ache that used to throb before a vein of raw Aetherium, or the nest of a particularly nasty beast. He didn’t feel the energy directly anymore, not like a full-fledged channeler, but the ghost of it remained.
He pulled his [Gourmet's Compendium] into view, its blue interface shimmering. He didn't need it to tell him the Monolith was active, but he needed its specificity.
[Analyzing environmental signatures…]
[Localized fauna detected: Shimmer-Stalkers (Aether-warped glass crawlers). Predatory. Highly aggressive.]
[Associated flora detected: Gloom-petal Fungi. Mycotoxins present. Avoid direct contact.]
Stellan grunted. Shimmer-Stalkers. He remembered them from his brief, inglorious career. Quick, silent, tipped with fangs that delivered a paralyzing venom. Not ideal for a chef armed with glorified paring knives. The Compendium, ever practical, offered a solution.
[Recipe unlocked: Pungent Spore-Paste. Crafted from Gloom-petal Fungi and Sulphur-root. Emits pheromone mimicry of crawler natural predator: the Skittering Rock-Lizard. Effect: Repulsion.]
He glanced around. The soft, violet light cast long, dancing shadows, and in their depths, he could discern clusters of the very fungi mentioned, their dark petals unfurling from the rock walls. Sulphur-root would be trickier, but he knew where to find it in similar cave environments. He moved with a renewed purpose, his gaze sweeping the ground for the right ingredients. He found a small patch of Sulphur-root, its yellow tendrils clinging to a damp crevice, and quickly harvested it, the pungent, earthy smell filling his nostrils. His knives, usually used for finely dicing vegetables, now served to scrape the Gloom-petal Fungi from the walls, their caps oozing a viscous, dark fluid. He quickly mashed the ingredients together, creating a thick, greenish paste with an incredibly foul odor. It reeked of decay and something sharper, like ammonia.
He dabbed a generous smear onto his boots and the hem of his tunic. The effect was almost immediate. From the darkness above, a skittering sound ceased. A faint shimmer in the shadows resolved into the many-eyed form of a crawler, its mineral carapace reflecting the violet light. It froze, its segmented legs twitching, before it recoiled with an audible clicking sound, retreating hastily back into the gloom. Another one, then another, scampered away, clearly disturbed by the scent. It wasn't bravery that would save them; it was simple, unappetizing chemistry.
He pressed on, following the path that felt most active, the one where the air tasted of imminent danger. The tunnels grew wider, more unstable, with fresh rockfall everywhere. He spotted fragments of Nela’s party’s specialized gear — a broken clasp from a utility belt, a scorch mark consistent with Kaelus Thane’s fire magic. They were close.
A guttural roar echoed ahead, followed by the metallic clang of steel on chitin. Marrek. Stellan broke into a sprint, his breath rasping in his throat. He rounded a bend into a vast, cavernous chamber, dimly lit by a smattering of bioluminescent growths. Before him, a desperate tableau unfolded.
Marrek, shield arm bleeding, was a bulwark against a swarm of Bouldertusk Grunts – squat, heavily armored beasts with tusks like broken spearheads. His movements were slow, burdened by exhaustion, but still utterly defiant. Behind him, huddled against a rock formation, were Nela’s two other party members: a pale Kaelus Thane clutching a sparking, useless wand, and a young apprentice healer trying to staunch a wound on Kaelus’s arm with shaking fingers. Nela was nowhere to be seen.
“Marrek!” Stellan shouted, his voice hoarse.
The knight spun, his battered visor jerking upright. “Stellan? What in the blazes are you doing here?”
Stellan didn’t waste words. He pulled a wrapped packet from his belt pouch, the [Iron-Hide Jerky] he’d prepared specifically for sustained combat. “Eat this,” he commanded, shoving it into Marrek’s hand. “Nela?”
Marrek, without questioning, tore into the jerky, his jaw working. His eyes remained fixed on Stellan. “The cave-in… she got separated. Deeper in. Krystof’s… there was a blast.” He punctuated the last word with a grunt, parrying another Bouldertusk’s charge.
Krystof had engineered this deliberately: not just to trap, but to isolate. He scanned the chamber, looking for any sign, any path forward.
Then it came. A sound that tore through the very fabric of the rock, shaking the cavern to its core. A deafening, primal roar that echoed endlessly, a sound born of unimaginable power and fury. It was followed, almost immediately, by Nela’s terrified, piercing scream.
