Chapter 1 of 10

The Sunstone Scramble and the Savory Secret

1.0k words

The scent of burnt ginger and stale grease hung thick in the Aridian Conclave's main scullery, a stench that could curdle even a seasoned prospector’s lunch. Stellan Varik, currently wrist-deep in a vat of congealed broth, grunted as a greasy iron pot slipped, splashing lukewarm starch onto his apron. Above the cacophony of clanking pots and panicked shouts, a sneering voice cut through. “Look at him, the legendary Varik. Reduced to scrubbing burnt crust off the Academy’s refuse. Couldn’t even make it past the preliminary trials, could you, *chef*?” Stellan didn’t bother turning. He knew that voice—a noble-born cadet named Thane, a strutting braggart whose only real skill lay in wielding his family's coin like a bludgeon. The cadet was supposedly a rising star in the Conclave, or at least he claimed as much. Stellan just kept scouring metal. “Some of us,” Stellan muttered, loud enough to carry, “ensure the fighters don’t collapse from dysentery before reaching a Monolith. A dull job, but someone cleans the grease, Thane.” A snort of derision followed, accompanied by the heavy clomp of Thane’s custom-forged boots approaching. “Such noble sacrifice. I’m sure your sister, the ‘Prodigy of the Aetherium,’ is so proud to know her elder brother is the foremost expert in pot-scouring.” He jabbed a gloved finger roughly into Stellan’s back, nearly sending him face-first into the stew. “Stick to your station, Varik. The real work is for those of us who actually *matter*.” Stellan tightened his grip on the scrubbing brush, knuckles white. The old anger, the familiar sting of failure, coiled in his gut. His station. His purpose. To be the invisible support, the unacknowledged foundation. He swallowed the bitter retort, just as a frantic shout sliced through the hall’s din. “Stellan! Gods, Stellan, they can't break it! Nela’s party—the granite construct isn’t cracking!” A junior pantry aide dashed in, pale and trembling. Stellan dropped the pot brush. The clatter echoed. His feigned indifference evaporated, replaced by a cold, sharp dread. “Not cracking?” Stellan pushed past the aide, voice tight. “What do you mean? It’s a standard trial beast! Nela shatters those blindfolded!” “Not this one!” The girl wrung her hands. “They say its core was fortified! Tougher than anything in the simulations! Proctor Borislav is about to call the trial a wash, and Nela’s advancement will be cancelled!” Cancelled. Nela losing her advancement would haunt her record for cycles. The memory of her eager, hopeful face hardened his resolve. He refused to let her stumble. He scanned the cluttered cookhouse, calculating quickly. Raw force had stalled out. His gaze snapped to a bin of coarse rye grains. Then, a translucent blue interface flickered into existence before his eyes, visible only to him. [Gourmet’s Compendium] [New Recipe Discovered!] [Gritstone Loaf: A dense, magically fortified bread, imbued with the raw, untamed power of ground monolith minerals. Imparts temporary, significant physical and arcane fortitude. Ideal for overcoming stubborn, earth-aligned constructs.] [Ingredients: Coarse Grains (500g), Crushed Sunstone Dust (10g), Purified Aether-Water (200ml), Fermenting Yeast (5g), Pinch of Ironbloom Salt.] [Culinary Arts Skill Suggestion: None required for basic preparation. Consider [Searing Soul] for enhanced offensive output if further strength is needed.] Stellan snatched a clay basin. “Fetch the mineral dust from the pantry shelf, now! And a flask of filtered spring runoff, cold!” Thane scoffed from the doorway. “Baking during a trial, Varik? Pathetic.” Stellan ignored him. His hands moved with a practiced, almost surgical precision. He scooped the coarse flour, tossed in the red mineral powder, then poured the crystalline fluid, which hummed softly as the dough bound. The yeast, the salt. He kneaded the dough with a furious, focused energy, shaping it into a rough, compact loaf. Within minutes, it was in a blazing hot oven, its earthy aroma beginning to mingle with the burnt ginger. “Stellan, how will this reach her? The arena gates are locked!” the aide fretted. Just then, the oak doors swung open, and Marrek Orlov, the stoic, disgraced knight assigned to Nela’s party, strode in. His usually impassive face was etched with grim frustration. His dented platemail bore fresh scorch marks. “We need something,” Marrek rumbled, his deep voice rough. “Anything. Nela is running dry trying to pierce its hide. Borislav gives us sixty seconds.” Stellan pulled the loaf from the oven. It was dark, crusty, and radiated a faint warmth that wasn’t entirely from the heat. A subtle, almost imperceptible blue shimmer pulsed within its dense texture. “Marrek,” Stellan said, holding out the [Gritstone Loaf], “Get this to her. Tell her it’s a new emergency field ration. Tell her to eat it. All of it.” Marrek's brow furrowed. He eyed the strange bread, then Stellan. There was no time for questions. He snatched the loaf, its warmth a tangible thing in his gauntleted hand, and turned on his heel, disappearing back out the doors with surprising speed. Silence dropped over the benches. Every apprentice, every scullion, even Thane stood motionless. A minute stretched into an eternity. Then, a low, resonant *thrum* vibrated through the Conclave’s very foundations. It was quickly followed by a shattering, explosive *CRACK* that made the glassware rattle and a few cooks yelp. Then, cheers. Wild, thunderous cheers erupted from the direction of the exam hall, echoing through the stone corridors. They grew louder, accompanied by the clang of a bell, signifying a successful exam. Nela had done it. She had passed. Stellan's shoulders dropped, tension sliding from his limbs. He braced a hand against the warm bricks, exhaling sharply. He hadn't seen it, but he knew. Nela, bathed in the glow of triumph, probably thinking it was all her own power, her own talent. And that was exactly how it should be. The room broke into noisy shouts and clattering spoons. Cooks slapped one another's shoulders. Thane slipped backward into the hall, scowling in confusion. Stellan, however, noticed a figure detached from the general revelry, moving with an almost predatory grace. Zofia Rostova, Nela’s sharp-tongued rival and an alchemist of considerable repute, approached him. Her dark eyes, usually cold and calculating, held a glint of something new: suspicion. In her gloved hand, she held a small, dark crumb, no bigger than a fingernail clipping. “What exactly was in that ‘ration,’ Varik?”
