Chapter 9 of 10
The Collapse of Kresnov
960 words
A guttural cry, more machine than man, ripped from Grigori Morosov’s throat. His body spasmed, a grotesque dance of agony. The shimmering emerald cloud churned faster, its collective hum rising to a shriek that grated against Olenka’s teeth. Her own thigh throbbed, a dull ache compared to the spectacle unfolding before her. Grigori’s skin, where the metallic swarm touched, began to darken, to harden, to take on the dull sheen of over-oxidized iron. His robes, once pristine, shredded as his form swelled, muscle and bone distorting, stretching. Twisted wires, black and sinewy, erupted from his shoulders, burrowing into the brass tiles, anchoring him to the lab floor.
His pupils rolled back beneath rigid lids, revealing nothing but milky white. The sophisticated intellect that had orchestrated so much suffering was being extinguished, replaced by a primal, unthinking rage. A sharp, cracking sound echoed as Grigori’s arm, encased in a burgeoning shell of dark metal, tore itself free from the floor, ripping up a section of brass as if it were parchment. He roared again, a sound of pure, unadulterated pain and fury, and swung the massive, clawed appendage, smashing it into one of Casimir’s meticulously arranged data consoles. Sparks flew, glass shattered, and the console buckled inward with a groan of tortured metal.
"Olenka!" Casimir’s voice, sharp and clear, cut through the din. He lunged, pulling her behind his broader frame, shielding her from the flying debris. His gaze, usually so fractured, was now a single, terrifying beam of focus. Grigori, a hulking, biomechanical nightmare, began to pull himself upright, his new form already far too large for the lab’s high ceilings. Wires snaked from his back, digging into the very framing of the Spire, drawing power, drawing substance. He was fusing, absorbing, becoming one with the colossal tower that had housed his ambition.
Casimir’s hand tightened around Olenka’s arm. "He's turning the Spire against itself. The swarm is rewriting its very foundations, using him as a conduit." His voice held a chilling calm, a clarity that only emerged when chaos reigned. He pressed a sequence of runes on his wrist-mounted chronometer. From the shadows beneath the shattered data consoles, a pack of clockwork hounds, their forms sleek and predatory, emerged. Their obsidian optics glowed with a feral intelligence, tracking Grigori’s monstrous transformation.
Grigori, now a towering colossus of flesh and twisted steel, ripped a massive girder from the ceiling, showering them with concrete dust and splintered metal. The entire laboratory groaned, a deep, resonant sound that vibrated through the floor. A crack, wide and jagged, spiderwebbed across the panoramic glass wall, obscuring the pristine cloudscape outside. He was no longer trying to escape; he was trying to bring it all down.
"Attack!" Casimir commanded, his voice a whip-crack. The hounds surged forward, a blur of polished chrome and razor-sharp teeth. They swarmed the monstrous Grigori, their synchronized attacks precise and brutal, aiming for the newly exposed joints where flesh met twisted machinery. One hound launched itself onto his shoulder, its jaws clamping down, tearing away a chunk of biomatter and sparking wires.
Grigori roared, a sound that shook the very foundation of the Spire. He lashed out, a sweeping blow that obliterated two of the hounds, sending their mechanical parts flying. But the others persisted, relentless, their attacks slowing his rampage, distracting him from the damage he was inflicting. The entire Spire swayed, a sickening lurch that sent Olenka stumbling. Her stomach churned. The Spire was a living thing, and it was dying.
"We have to move!" Olenka yelled, pulling at Casimir’s hand. The floor beneath them buckled, a section of brass tile collapsing into the abyss below, revealing a dizzying drop into the smog-choked lower strata. "The entire Spire is failing!"
Casimir nodded, his eyes scanning the chaos with an almost detached analytical intensity. "The primary load anchors are compromised. The particulates are accelerating the degradation." He pulled Olenka closer, shielding her again as another section of the wall exploded outward, blasted by Grigori’s uncontrolled fury. They were backed to the precipice, the lab’s remaining glass walls gone, leaving them exposed to the roaring winds and churning clouds that clung to the Spire’s upper reaches.
Just as Grigori, roaring his defiance, plunged a colossal, metal-sheathed fist into the ground, sending a shockwave through the collapsing platform beneath their feet, a distant rumble grew into a deafening roar. Through the roiling, grey smog, a hulking shape materialized: a cargo airship, its sides scarred, its propellers churning furiously. It was off-course, too low for the upper clouds, its trajectory reckless.
Olenka halted. On the airship’s precarious landing ramp, a figure stood, silhouetted against the turbulent sky. Misha. He grinned, a flash of white in the gloom, and swung a jury-rigged harpoon cannon. A thick, braided cable shot out, piercing the air with a metallic hiss, and slammed into the Spire’s remaining structural beams, embedding itself with a solid *thunk*.
"Olenka! Casimir! Grab on!" Misha’s voice, rough but triumphant, carried over the wind. "It’s a long way down, but this old bird can take it!"
Relief cut sharp through Olenka's panic. She turned to Casimir, whose expression remained unreadable, his gaze fixed on the harpoon line. It was their escape, their only chance. She reached for the blaster at her hip, intending to clear a path, to help Casimir get to the line, to *leap*.
[KILL CASIMIR ZHELANOV OR SUFFER IMMEDIATE CARDIAC ARREST]
The System’s cold, bloody text seared across her internal display. A searing pain flared in her shoulder, her arm locking. Her muscles convulsed, a violent, involuntary spasm. Her hand, against her will, closed around the blaster grip. Her arm rose, stiff and unyielding, aiming the weapon. Not at Grigori. Not at the collapsing debris. But squarely at Casimir’s chest.
