Chapter 1: Crimson Dust and Iron Will

2.2k words

Dust coated Kaelen's tongue. Grit scraped against her teeth, a constant companion in this forsaken land. Morning light, a sickly orange hue, filtered through the viewport of her personal barracks, painting the metal walls in stark, unwelcome lines. Stretching, Kaelen felt the familiar ache in her shoulders. Years of combat training had sculpted her body into a weapon, but the relentless patrols on the Eryndor frontier still gnawed at her. Every muscle protested, a low thrumming complaint. Another day. Another rotation. Shifting her weight, she swung her legs over the cot. Boots thudded onto the cold durasteel floor. The barracks, a cramped box of efficiency, offered little comfort. A folded uniform, a comms unit, and her personal weapon comprised most of her belongings. Duty called. Securing her braids, Kaelen moved with practiced ease. Her uniform, a slate-grey jumpsuit with reinforced plating, slid over her skin. The insignia of the Vanguard, a stylized hawk clutching a lightning bolt, emblazoned her shoulder. Vanguard. Protectorate of the Outer Rim. A fancy name for glorified frontier guards. The mess hall pulsed with muted chatter. Low light cast long shadows from the soldiers hunched over their ration packs. The air hung thick with the smell of recycled protein and burnt synth-coffee. Kaelen grabbed a tray, the weight familiar in her hand. Her eyes scanned the room. Faces, tired and grim, stared back. They were all here for the same reason: to hold the line. Against what, exactly, depended on the day's intelligence reports. Settling at an empty table, Kaelen chewed slowly. The food was bland, but filling. She needed the energy. Today's patrol sector was known for its 'jumpers' – indigenous creatures that burrowed beneath the crimson sand, erupting with lethal speed. A shadow fell over her. "Morning, Kaelen." Captain Roric stood there, his frame an imposing presence even in the dim light. His eyes, sharp and unwavering, met hers. A scar bisected his left brow, a testament to countless skirmishes. "Captain," Kaelen acknowledged, her voice even. Roric grunted, dropping his own tray onto the table opposite her. He moved with a heavy, deliberate grace, a predator assessing its territory. His rank distinguished him, but his reputation for brutal efficiency truly commanded respect. "Briefing in ten. Sector Gamma. Expect trouble." Kaelen nodded. "Jumpers?" "And something else." Roric's gaze hardened. "Long-range scans picked up irregular energy signatures. Nothing we've encountered before." A knot tightened in Kaelen's gut. "Irregular?" "Fluctuating. Too high for standard fauna. Too chaotic for our own tech." He took a long swallow of his coffee, his expression unreadable. "Could be a new variant. Could be something... else." The 'something else' hung in the air, unspoken. The frontier was a constant source of new threats, each more terrifying than the last. Their outpost, Fort Bastion, was humanity's furthest reach into the unknown. Rising from the table, Roric’s voice dropped. "Gear up. I want you leading point." Kaelen pushed her tray aside. "Understood, Captain." --- The armory hummed with low-frequency energy. Soldiers moved like ghosts between racks of weapons and armored suits. The clatter of boots, the hiss of pneumatic seals, the metallic tang of ozone – these were the sounds of impending deployment. Kaelen selected her rifle, a standard-issue plasma caster. Its weight felt good, solid and reliable. She checked the power cell, cycled the action. Satisfied, she slung it across her back. Next, her armor. Plated durasteel over a flexible undersuit. It was bulky, but it offered protection against the razor claws and acid spittle of Eryndor's more aggressive inhabitants. Strapping on her comms unit, Kaelen ran through her mental checklist. Med-kit, spare power cells, environmental scanner, survival rations. Every item was essential. There was no room for error out there. She joined her squad by the main gate. Sergeant Dax, a stocky, grizzled veteran, gave her a curt nod. His eyes, perpetually narrowed, scanned her gear for any oversight. "Looks good, Lieutenant," Dax rumbled, his voice like gravel. "Ready to get dusty?" "Always, Sergeant." Kaelen felt the familiar surge of adrenaline. Fear was a luxury she couldn't afford. Focus was her weapon, precision her shield. The other two members of her squad, Private Elara and Specialist Finn, stood stiffly, their faces a mix of apprehension and determination. Elara, young but sharp, handled comms and tactical overlays. Finn, a quiet giant, carried the heavy plasma cannon. Roric stood before them, his voice amplified by his helmet comms. "Listen up, Vanguard. Sector Gamma is hot. Long-range scans show anomalous activity. We proceed with extreme caution." His gaze swept over each face. "Your mission is reconnaissance. Identify the source of the signatures. Engage only if necessary. Bring back intel. That is your primary objective." "Understood, Captain!" the squad chorused. The massive blast doors of Fort Bastion groaned open, revealing the harsh, alien landscape. Crimson sands stretched to a horizon under a sky of bruised purple and orange. Jagged, obsidian rock formations jutted from the desert floor like broken teeth. Wind whipped dust into Kaelen's face. The taste of metal and ancient earth filled her mouth. This was Eryndor. A world of brutal beauty and unending danger. "Move out," Roric commanded. Kaelen led the way, her boots crunching on the gritty surface. Her helmet's HUD flickered to life, displaying topographical data, atmospheric readings, and squad positions. Every sensor was active, scanning for movement, heat signatures, any deviation from the norm. The silence of the desert was deceptive. It hummed with unseen life, with the potential for sudden, violent death. Hours passed. The sun climbed higher, turning the sky into a searing canvas of red and gold. Sweat trickled down Kaelen's back, despite her suit's environmental controls. The heat was oppressive, a constant pressure. Finn reported no contacts. Elara’s comms remained clear, save for their own chatter. Dax kept a vigilant watch on their flanks, his plasma rifle held ready. They moved past canyons carved by ancient winds, their walls shimmering with strange crystalline deposits. Kaelen ran her hand over a smooth, obsidian-like surface. It felt cool, impossibly smooth. The world was full of wonders and horrors. "Hold!" Kaelen's voice cut through the comms. Her HUD registered a faint ripple in the sand ahead. Everyone froze. Weapons came up, muzzles sweeping the terrain. "What is it, Lieutenant?" Dax whispered. "Movement. Subsurface. Not a jumper." Jumpers created distinct, rapid tremors. This was slower, more deliberate, almost... intelligent. Elara adjusted her scanner. "Confirmed. Large mass, slow progression. Bearing two-seven-zero, approaching our position." The ground vibrated faintly beneath their boots. A low rumble echoed from beneath the sand. "Form up!" Kaelen ordered. "Finn, wide arc, ready to suppress. Dax, cover our rear. Elara, keep those scans coming." The rumble intensified. Sand began to shift, then heave, in a wide circle just fifty meters ahead. Something vast was emerging. Then it broke surface. Not a creature of flesh and blood. Not entirely. It was a machine. A colossal, segmented monstrosity of dark, pitted metal, adorned with glowing crimson vents. It looked ancient, alien, and utterly malevolent. It had multiple legs, like an insect, each ending in a clawed foot that tore at the earth. Its front was a blunt, armored ram, but from its sides, multiple plasma cannons, larger than Finn's, swiveled to target them. "Hostiles!" Kaelen yelled, her finger already on her trigger. "Open fire!" Plasma bolts sizzled through the air, impacting the machine's armor with concussive force. The creature barely registered the hits. Its crimson vents flared, and then its own weapons unleashed a barrage. Explosions rocked the desert. Sand and shrapnel flew. Kaelen dove for cover behind a spire of rock, pulling Elara with her. Finn laid down suppressive fire, his heavy cannon roaring. Dax returned fire, his movements precise and deadly. "Its armor is too thick!" Finn shouted over the din. "No effect!" Kaelen peered from cover. The machine advanced, relentless. Its targeting systems locked onto them. This wasn't a patrol skirmish. This was an eradication. "Fall back!" Kaelen commanded. "Find better cover! Elara, get Roric on the horn! We need backup, now!" Elara scrambled, fingers flying over her comms panel. "Trying, Lieutenant! Comm interference is severe!" The machine fired again. A direct hit exploded near Dax, sending him sprawling. Kaelen's heart hammered. "Dax! Report!" The Sergeant coughed, pushing himself up, his helmet cracked. "I'm good, Lieutenant! Just... a little bruised!" "Finn, keep its attention! Elara, cover Dax! We need to disable its legs!" Kaelen switched her plasma caster to maximum power, aiming for the machine's articulated joints. Her shots, along with Finn's, gouged shallow craters in the metal. The machine paused, its glowing vents pulsing faster, as if annoyed. It shifted its focus, aiming its main cannon directly at Kaelen. A chilling hum filled the air. "Kaelen, move!" Dax yelled. She threw herself to the side as a concentrated beam of energy tore through the rock where she'd been standing, vaporizing it instantly. The heat washed over her, even through her armor. This was more than a machine. It was a harbinger. "Elara, anything?" Kaelen gasped, reloading. "Still trying! The interference is coming from the machine itself!" Elara's voice was tight with panic. Then, a new contact registered on Kaelen's HUD. Not one. Multiple. Coming from the east, fast. "More hostiles!" Kaelen warned, her voice strained. "Elara, give me an ID!" The young private's fingers danced across her console, her brow furrowed in intense concentration. "Unknown signatures, Lieutenant! They're... human-shaped? And moving too fast for ground units!" Human-shaped? On Eryndor's frontier? This was unheard of. Their outpost was the only known human settlement for thousands of kilometers. The ground vibrated again, not from the colossal machine, but from something else, something faster. Dust plumes erupted in the distance, growing rapidly. "Lieutenant, I'm getting... strange energy readings from them too," Elara reported, her voice laced with awe and fear. "Like nothing I've ever seen. Extremely powerful, focused bursts." Kaelen risked a glance. Figures, too indistinct in the dust, were closing in. They moved with impossible speed, leaping over rock formations, covering ground at a pace no unaugmented human could achieve. Suddenly, a series of bright, blinding flashes erupted from the approaching figures. They were not plasma bolts. They were... different. Pure energy, tearing through the air, impacting the colossal machine with devastating force. The machine, which had shrugged off their plasma fire, reeled. Sparks flew from its armored plates. Its targeting systems flickered wildly. "What in the hells?" Dax breathed, watching the impossible spectacle. These newcomers were attacking the machine. Their arrival was unexpected, their methods, incomprehensible. One of the figures, taller than the rest, clad in dark, form-fitting armor, landed gracefully on a nearby rock spire. He moved with a predatory elegance, a stark contrast to their own bulky military gear. A visor concealed his face, but Kaelen felt the intensity of his gaze, even across the distance. He raised a hand, and a wave of raw energy, like a physical blast, slammed into the machine. The colossal construct buckled, groaning under the assault. Kaelen and her squad were caught between two unknown forces. The ancient, hostile machine, and these new, impossibly powerful combatants. The battle raged. The dark-armored figures moved like blurs, their energy blasts tearing chunks from the machine. But the machine was not easily felled. It retaliated, its cannons spitting fire, forcing the newcomers to dodge and weave. Kaelen's comms crackled. "Lieutenant Kaelen, report! Status! We lost comms with you!" It was Roric's voice, laced with urgency. "Captain, we are engaged with an unknown heavy hostile! Massive machine, heavily armored! But... we have unknown contacts, possibly human, engaging the machine as well! They are using highly advanced, unidentifiable energy weapons!" Kaelen relayed, her eyes fixed on the unfolding chaos. "Unknown humans?" Roric sounded incredulous. "Impossible. Hold your position! Do NOT engage the new contacts unless provoked. Observe and report! We're sending a quick-reaction force!" "Understood, Captain!" Kaelen confirmed. One of the dark-armored figures, a blur of motion, closed in on the machine's primary weapon array. With an almost casual flick of his wrist, a surge of energy flowed from his hand, ripping through the cannon. The weapon exploded, showering the desert in molten metal. This was beyond anything Kaelen had ever witnessed. This wasn't technology she knew. This wasn't science. It felt... like something else. Something ancient, raw. The colossal machine finally screamed, a metallic shriek that vibrated through the ground. It began to collapse, its segmented body tearing apart as the dark figures unleashed a coordinated assault. They moved with a terrifying precision, like a perfectly synchronized hunting pack. Within minutes, the massive machine was reduced to a smoldering wreck, a testament to their overwhelming power. The desert fell silent once more, save for the crackle of cooling metal and the wind. The dark-armored figures regrouped, their gazes sweeping over the battlefield. Kaelen knew they were searching. Searching for survivors. Searching for them. She pulled her squad deeper into the shadows of the rock spire. They were exposed, vulnerable. Their plasma rifles felt like toys compared to the power these beings wielded. The tall, dark-armored figure from the spire turned its head, its visor seeming to fix directly on their hiding spot. Kaelen felt a chill crawl down her spine, a primal warning. He began to advance, slowly, deliberately. Each step was measured, silent. He was coming for them.
