Chapter 7: Path to the Nexus

1.1k words

Wind whipped Erin's cloak, tugging at the edges of her hood. Chilled air bit at her exposed cheeks. Below, the sprawling city of Eldoria dwindled into a distant sprawl of grey and muted earth tones, a world she had left behind with barely a backward glance. Her journey to the Serpent's Coil mountains began. A tattered map, a gift from the enigmatic bard, rustled in her gloved hand, its faded lines promising a path to the 'First Echoes'. Barely a path, she corrected. Jagged peaks clawed at the bruised sky. Ravines plunged into dizzying depths. The mountains were a labyrinth of stone and ice, a desolate fortress guarding its secrets with formidable indifference. Following the bard's vague instructions, she pressed onward. His words, cryptic and laden with sorrow, echoed in her mind. "The First Echoes will guide you, child. Listen to the silence, for it speaks loudest to those who seek truth." Whatever that meant. Hours blurred into a grueling ascent. Each step crunched on loose scree. Her boots, reinforced with a subtle charm, found purchase on slick rock faces. The air grew thinner, sharper. Suddenly, a tremor shook the ground. A low rumble vibrated through her bones. Up ahead, the mountainside groaned. Loose rock, a wall of it, began to tear free, plunging downwards in a roaring landslide. Most would have fled. Most would have been crushed. Erin, however, simply extended a hand. Time warped. The tumbling stones hung suspended in the air, glittering shards of rock frozen mid-descent. A gentle push of her will rearranged them. They didn't fall. They rose, settling back into place, forming a stable, if temporary, rampart against the mountain's rage. She walked across the newly formed passage, the scent of disturbed earth heavy in the air. Her powers made obstacles irrelevant. Landslides, crumbling paths, sheer rock faces – all bent to her will. A flick of her wrist, and a chasm yawned before her, then a bridge of solidified air shimmered into existence, spanning the void. Each step on its transparent surface felt like walking on nothing. Nothing. A cold dread seeped into her bones. It had nothing to do with the mountain's chill. It was the absolute ease of it all. No challenge, no struggle. Just the cold efficiency of her magic. She was alone here, utterly alone, with only the echoes of her own footsteps. Hours turned into days. The higher she climbed, the more the world narrowed. Towering peaks, scarred and ancient, became her only companions. The silence was profound, broken only by the shriek of a distant raptor or the whisper of the wind through desolate crags. Her isolation grew. The bard had spoken of connection, of answers. But this path felt like a deepening solitude. Her immense power, a shield against all external threats, was also a barrier. It set her apart. She cleared paths, conjured bridges, diverted raging streams. She never asked for help. She never needed to. This self-sufficiency, once a source of pride, now felt heavy. A burden. What was the point of all this power if it only served to emphasize her aloneness? The sheer desolation of the landscape mirrored her own internal state. A vast, empty canvas where even the sun struggled to cast a vibrant hue. She made camp one evening in a sheltered alcove, the wind howling past her hidden spot. A small, controlled flame flickered, offering meager warmth against the encroaching cold. Eating a bland ration, she stared out at the moonlit peaks. They seemed to mock her search for belonging. Was this path truly leading to connection, or deeper solitude? Sleep offered little respite. Dreams were a jumble of the bard's mournful eyes, the crushing weight of her past, and the endless, silent mountains. She woke with a start, the cold still clinging to her, the questions still gnawing. Another day of climbing. Another day of effortless feats. A sheer cliff face, hundreds of feet high, presented itself. She didn't bother looking for a winding path. Instead, she concentrated, the air around her distorting. Stone rippled, then surged, forming steps, then a winding staircase carved directly into the rock. It was crude, but effective, a monument to her unchecked power. Midway up, she paused. The view was breathtaking, a panorama of an untouched, unforgiving world. No signs of civilization, no smoke plumes, no distant lights. Just raw, untamed nature. And her. She was an anomaly in this wildness, a force that bent reality to its whim. Yet, she felt like the most vulnerable thing on these mountains. Her heart ached with a longing she couldn't quite name. It was more than just escaping the Shadow Collective; it was a search for something to fill the vast emptiness within her. The bard's instructions were frustratingly vague. "Follow the dragon's tooth peak, then seek the weeping stone." Every peak looked like a dragon's tooth. Every stone, weathered by millennia of wind and ice, seemed to weep. Still, she pressed on. Her determination was a stubborn, unwavering flame within her. She would find these 'First Echoes'. She would find answers. She had to. The alternative was a continuation of this aching, profound isolation. Days blurred into weeks. Her supplies dwindled. She conjured water from the air, purified snowmelt with a thought. Hunger was easily dismissed; she could sustain herself, if needed, on pure mana, though it always left her feeling drained and hollow. She preferred the taste of actual food, however bland. Her skin grew tougher, her muscles accustomed to the relentless climb. She moved with an almost ethereal grace, a predator in a landscape of stone. Yet, her mind remained turbulent, constantly sifting through the bard's words, searching for a deeper meaning, for a hint of what lay ahead. One afternoon, a narrow pass led to a vast, open plateau. The wind here was a physical force, threatening to rip her from her feet. Snow lay thick on the ground, pristine and undisturbed. She was truly alone here, higher than she had ever been before. Her gaze swept across the horizon, searching for any landmark that might match the bard's riddles. A particularly jagged peak dominated the skyline, its summit lost in a swirl of icy mist. That must be it. The dragon's tooth. Resuming her climb, the air grew frigid, biting through her layers of charmed clothing. Her breath plumed in white clouds. The rock under her hands was rough, unforgiving. This was a challenge even her magic couldn't completely soften. She still had to climb, to endure the cold, to navigate the treacherous terrain. Her powers simply made it possible, not easy. As she ascended a particularly jagged peak, a shimmering distortion in the air coalesced, revealing for a fleeting moment the distinct, metallic gleam of mana-steel, before vanishing, leaving only a faint echo of the chilling scent she knew so well.
