Chapter 1 of 10
The Traitor's Ascension
848 words
The world began as a cacophony of splintering metal and groaning concrete, a symphony of collapse that sang the death of the old Earth. Zirul’s new eyes, lenses of pure starlight, registered the approaching catastrophe with a calm that defied the physical tremors shaking the bunker. His former self, a withered husk of a man confined to a motorized chair, lay broken and forgotten beneath a tumbling support beam, its skull a crimson stain on the cracked floor. Beside it, another form thrashed, a shimmering, translucent figure – the divine Envoy, its essence screaming, trapped in the dying, mangled human shell.
His new body, a flawless construct of midnight and starlight, stood perfectly still amidst the chaos, radiating an impossible serenity. The air around him shimmered, infused with latent power. He felt no pain, no fear, only the cold, sharp clarity of a strategist who had finally been given the tools to win.

The metallic shriek of the system message was a welcome distraction from the Envoy’s raw, agonizing wails. Zirul watched the system prompt materialize. The gods’ own rules, their own systems, were his ultimate weapon. They had created this game, and now he would twist it into their undoing.
A wraith detached itself from the deepening gloom of the collapsing vault. It moved with unnatural speed, a serpentine coil of pure darkness, its form vaguely humanoid, armed with curved sickles that drank the scarce light. An ethereal stalker, a phantom of the Envoy’s failing will, now moved as a rogue element seeking vengeance for its fallen master.
“*Usurper*,” a voice hissed, not with air, but with a tearing sound, as if the fabric of reality itself was rent. “You have defiled a vessel of the Court. Your essence will be flayed.”
The stalker lunged. Its sickles, razor-keen, sought the luminous core of Zirul’s chest. The air crackled with an energy that promised swift, agonizing oblivion.
Zirul simply observed. He had always been a master of calculated risk, and now, with the Pantheon Interface humming in his mind, he saw an opportunity. He didn't evade; he allowed the attack to come within an inch of his breastplate, noting the apparition's trajectory, the slight tremor in its spectral arm, the faint luminescence of its core.
[Envoy Assassin – Hostile. Threat Level: Moderate. Would you like to initiate Counter-Protocol: Annihilation?]
*Annihilation? No. Too simple*, Zirul thought, his mental command clear and precise. He parsed the architecture of the interface, searching for an alternative. *There must be a way to claim it, not just destroy it.*

[PROTOCOL FOUND: Shadow Extraction. Requirements Met: Envoy Avatar, Direct Combat Engagement, Target Soul Signature Present. WARNING: Unsanctioned Use. High Risk of Soul Contamination.]
“Execute,” Zirul commanded, his voice a low thrum that vibrated through the collapsing redoubt. He felt a surge of cold energy, not from within himself, but from the vast, observing cosmos. It was a brutal, invasive force, reaching out, not to kill, but to *claim*.
The specter froze mid-strike, its form flickering violently. A soundless shriek tore from its throat as tendrils of ink, darker than the deepest void, erupted from Zirul’s outstretched hand. They latched onto the creature, piercing its ethereal flesh, coiling around its core. The creature convulsed, its twin weapons clattering to the floor as its substance was drawn, pulled apart, and reshaped.
Its form twisted, shriveled, and expanded, losing its elegant malice, gaining a grotesque, hulking solidity. The steel edges melted away into stubby, clawed hands. Its intelligence, its hatred, its very will, were consumed, replaced by a vacant, burning loyalty. When it solidified, it stood as a hulking brute of compressed gloom, its glowing red eyes fixed on Zirul, awaiting command.
[Envoy Assassin Soul Signature Extracted. New Entity: Shadow Servant, Grade I. Loyalty: Absolute. Abilities: Phased Movement, Corporeal Strike. Pantheon Authority Granted: 10 points.]
Zirul regarded his first creation. His paranoia, honed across decades of physical helplessness, became an operational doctrine. He had needed to trust no one then, and with this ability, he would never need to trust the living again. An army of the dead, unconditionally loyal, impervious to deceit. This was how he would conquer the heavens.
[PANTHEON INTERFACE: Greetings, Administrator. Your preliminary audit begins in 72 hours. Ensure your sector’s progress reflects the divine investment. Failure to entertain shall result in severe penalties.]
Seventy-two hours. Urgency sharpened Zirul's focus. The gods were not entirely blind. He needed to act, and quickly. He glanced at the Shadow Servant, then around the rapidly deteriorating subterranean shelter. The light of the full moon, a sickly, yellow disc, pierced a gaping hole in the ceiling, illuminating a horror beyond.
A wall of water, an impossible, towering force, surged through the newly formed breach. It roared, a sound that swallowed all other noise, a liquid mountain intent on purification. The ocean, freed from its ancient confines, had come to claim the remnants of Oru. His new body, his new conquest, threatened to drown before it even began.
