Chapter 30: The Frozen Throne

1.3k words

Frost bit into Onyx's cheeks, sharp and unforgiving. Breaths bloomed like white smoke between them, vanishing into the oppressive darkness of the chamber. Xime's hand brushed against his, a sudden spark of heat that made Onyx's skin prickle. Shadows coiled around Onyx's wrists, reacting to the sheer density of the cold ahead. Beneath their boots, the floor was slick, black ice that mirrored the high, vaulted ceiling above. Every step echoed, a hollow clicking sound that felt too loud in the dead silence of the tomb. Jagged pillars of ice rose like broken teeth from the floor, casting long, distorted reflections. High above them, ancient frozen banners hung like sheets of solid glass, stiff and unmoving. "Stay close," Xime whispered, his voice vibrating through the bond still thrumming in Onyx's chest. Onyx clenched his jaw, refusing to show how much the lingering mental touch had rattled him. Sharing Xime's memories, feeling the raw ache of his loneliness, had stripped away Onyx's armor. Now, he felt completely exposed, his defenses crumbling like dry earth under a heavy rain. A pale, pulsing orb hovered just above the frozen figure on the throne. It was the Primordial Spark, a sphere of pure, crackling energy that seemed to hold both blinding light and deep darkness. Its surface rippled with liquid silver, casting long, distorted reflections across the ice-slick floor. Looking at it made Onyx's chest ache, a physical pull that demanded he reach out and take it. His shadow magic roared to life, desperate to claim the power that could finally end this eternal twilight. "We need to be careful," Xime said, his golden eyes scanning the frozen pillars. "Careful doesn't get us out of here alive," Onyx muttered, stepping past him. Boots crunched on the frost, each stride taking him closer to the silent figure draped in white and silver. She looked like a statue, her head tilted slightly back, her skin a translucent, pale blue. Long, silver hair flowed over her shoulders, frozen in mid-air as if caught in a perpetual breeze. Crown points of sharp, black ice pierced the air above her head, marking her royal status. Ancient, beautiful, and utterly lifeless, she sat as a monument to a forgotten age. Onyx stopped at the base of the dais, the sheer cold radiating from her making his eyelashes freeze. "Onyx, wait," Xime called out, his hand reaching to grab Onyx's shoulder. "We don't have time to hesitate," Onyx snapped, pulling away from the touch that threatened to melt his resolve. Stepping onto the first frozen step of the dais, his gaze locked on the hovering Spark. Just a few more inches, and the nightmare would be over. No more twilight, no more forced proximity, no more of this agonizing pull toward the light wielder. He raised his hand, his fingers twitching as they neared the silver-blue glow of the relic. Shadows bled from his fingertips, stretching toward the light like hungry, desperate tendrils. Suddenly, a deep, resonant hum vibrated through the chamber floor, rattling Onyx's teeth. Ice cracked with a sound like a thunderclap. Two eyes, brilliant and devoid of pupils, snapped open on the frozen woman's face. They glowed with a terrifying, absolute-zero light that pierced through the darkness. Before Onyx could even draw a breath, she raised a single, frost-covered hand. An explosion of pure, freezing energy blasted outward, a shockwave of white wind that slammed into Onyx's chest. He gasped, stumbling back, but the frost didn't just push him. Ice crawled up his boots, lightning-fast and solidifying into thick, unbreakable blocks. He tried to rip his feet free, but the frost had already encased his ankles, anchoring him firmly to the floor. Dark blades of shadow slammed down to hack at the barrier, but they shattered instantly against the ancient elemental frost. Cold seeped through his leather boots, biting into his flesh and threatening to turn his blood to ice. "Move back, Xime!" Onyx shouted, his voice cracking with a panic he hated himself for showing. Xime didn't move back; instead, he stepped forward, his hands glowing with bright, golden fire. A wave of heat crashed against the ice around Onyx's legs, but the flames hissed and died the moment they touched the frost. Standing up from her throne, the frozen queen looked down at them, her movements fluid despite the ice coating her skin. "Foolish children," she spoke, her voice like grinding glaciers, dry and ancient. "You dare seek to disrupt the balance I sacrificed everything to create?" she asked, her gaze landing on Xime. "I am the First Light Queen, the one who chose this eternal stasis to keep our realms apart," she declared. "Division of light and dark is the only thing keeping this world from collapsing into chaos," she continued. Onyx strained against his icy bonds, his muscles screaming under the absolute-zero temperature. "You didn't save the world," Onyx spat, his breath fogging heavily. "You froze it in a slow death." She turned her piercing, frozen eyes toward Onyx, her expression curling into deep disgust. "Shadow wielder," she whispered, the words dripping with ancient hatred. "Your kind has always been a rot, a dark stain on the purity of the light," she said. Turning her focus back to Xime, her hand extended toward him in a welcoming gesture. "But you, child of the sun, you carry the blood of my descendants," she murmured. "Your light is strong, yet you pollute it by standing beside this creature of the dark," she scolded. Xime stood frozen, his jaw clenched, his eyes darting between the queen and Onyx. "Twilight is destroying us," Xime said, his voice tight. "We need the Spark to save our people." "Then take it," the First Light Queen commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "But the Spark demands a sacrifice to align with a single wielder," she explained. "Darkness must be extinguished for the light to truly shine and banish the twilight forever," she added. She pointed a long, frozen finger directly at Onyx's chest. "Execute him," the queen commanded, her eyes flashing with absolute authority. "Claim the Primordial Spark, purge the shadow from this world, and save your people," she promised. Silence descended upon the chamber, heavy and suffocating. Onyx felt the cold creeping up his shins now, his legs completely numb. He looked at Xime, waiting for the denial, waiting for the light wielder to laugh in the queen's face. But Xime didn't laugh. Xime stood perfectly still, his gaze fixed on the floor, his shoulders tense. "Xime?" Onyx called out, his chest tightening with a sudden, suffocating dread. Trust issues he had fought so hard to suppress flared back to life, screaming in his ears. *He's going to do it,* the voice in Onyx's head whispered. *He's a light wielder. You are nothing to him.* *You let him in, and now he's going to kill you.* Slowly, Xime raised his head, his golden eyes dark, shielded, and completely unreadable. Warmth that had defined him throughout their journey seemed to vanish, replaced by a terrible, hollow coldness. He reached down, his fingers wrapping around the hilt of his broadsword. Metal scraped against the scabbard, a sharp, ringing sound that felt like a death knell. Blade slid free, immediately igniting with a bright, searing golden light that hissed against the icy air. He didn't look at the queen; his eyes were locked entirely on Onyx. Step by step, Xime began to walk down the dais toward him. Broadsword gleamed, its heat radiating outward, but it offered no comfort to Onyx. "Xime, stop," Onyx said, his voice barely a whisper as he struggled against the ice. Shadow magic lashed out, but it was weak, stifled by the extreme cold and the sheer panic racing through his veins. Light wielder didn't answer, his face a mask of absolute, chilling resolve. Each step Xime took was deliberate, heavy, and devoid of the hesitation Onyx desperately searched for. Heat from the blade began to melt the very edges of Onyx's vision, but the ice around his legs remained unbreakable. He was trapped, a sitting target for the man he had foolishly begun to trust. First Light Queen watched with a cruel, satisfied smile, her arms crossed over her chest. "Yes, rid the world of the darkness," she whispered, her voice echoing in the chamber. Xime stopped just a few feet away, raising the glowing broadsword. Golden light illuminated the sharp angles of Xime's face, casting deep shadows across his eyes. There was no warmth left in those eyes, only a cold, calculated focus that made Onyx's heart freeze with absolute dread.
