Chapter 24: Falling Through Twilight

855 words

Wind roared in Onyx's ears, a deafening screech that tore the breath straight from his lungs. Gravity dragged him down into the endless dark, his stomach rising to meet his throat. Below them lay nothing but an abyss of swirling violet fog and jagged rock teeth waiting to grind them to dust. "Xime!" he yelled, though the sound was instantly swallowed by the rushing air. Tumbling through the empty air, Onyx kicked out, desperate to find purchase in a sky that had abandoned them. A flash of gold caught his eye just feet away. Reaching out, Onyx ignored the screaming protest of his exhausted muscles. He lunged forward mid-air, defying the physics of their terminal velocity. His fingers clamped around Xime’s leather-clad wrist. With a violent tug, Onyx pulled the light wielder flush against his chest. Instantly, their opposing magics clashed, sparking like flint against steel. Heat flared where their bodies collided, a shocking contrast to the biting cold of the descent. Xime’s eyes went wide, reflecting the dark violet hues of the chasm. "Onyx!" Xime gasped, his hands instantly gripping Onyx’s shoulders with a white-knuckled intensity. "Hold on!" Onyx roared back. Summoning every remaining drop of his shadow reserves, Onyx willed his dark cloak to expand. Shadows tore from his shoulders, stretching outward like massive, tattered wings. They caught the rushing wind with a violent, snapping jerk that nearly dislocated Onyx's shoulders. Pain flared through his collarbone, but he gritted his teeth and held on tight. Their descent slowed, the makeshift parachute of pure darkness straining against the sheer force of gravity. "We’re still going too fast!" Xime shouted, his voice vibrating against Onyx’s chest. "Brace yourself!" Onyx commanded, wrapping his arms tighter around Xime's waist. He could feel the rapid, terrified beat of Xime’s heart syncing up with his own. It was a dangerous, intoxicating rhythm that threatened to distract him from the impending ground. Beneath them, the dark abyss was rushing up to greet them at terrifying speed. A vast, subterranean cavern opened up, dominated by a massive body of dark, glowing liquid. "I've got the landing!" Xime yelled, his hands beginning to glow with a brilliant, blinding light. Gold poured from Xime’s palms, weaving into a dense, shimmering dome around them. It was a kinetic shield, crackling with pure, raw solar energy. Seconds later, they hit the surface. Boom. Kinetic force took the brunt of the collision, sending a massive shockwave through the cavern. Golden light shattered like glass, dispersing the initial force but throwing them deep into the liquid. Water—no, not water—closed over Onyx’s head. It was liquid twilight, thick as oil and cold enough to freeze blood in a heartbeat. Coldness bit through his leather armor, sinking into his skin like a thousand needles. His lungs screamed for air as the dark liquid dragged them down into its murky depths. Bubbles of dark energy escaped his lips as he struggled to find his bearings. Beside him, Xime was thrashing, his golden light dimming rapidly under the suffocating pressure of the twilight. Onyx kicked his legs, pulling Xime upward with all his remaining strength. They broke the surface, gasping and coughing up the bitter, metallic-tasting liquid. "Swim!" Onyx choked out, his voice hoarse. Every movement felt like pushing through wet cement. Liquid twilight was actively trying to seep into their armor, creeping into every seam and joint. It felt heavy, a parasitic weight that sapped their magical reserves with every second of contact. A floating sheet of jagged ice drifted nearby, glowing with a faint, eerie violet hue. Onyx swam toward it, dragging Xime’s deadweight body along. He grabbed the edge of the ice, his fingers instantly going numb. With a desperate, primal heave, Onyx hauled Xime up onto the frozen surface. He scrambled up after him, collapsing onto the hard ice, panting heavily. Shivering racked Onyx's frame, so violent his teeth rattled against one another. "Xime," he gasped, crawling over to the light wielder. Xime lay on his back, his skin pale and blue-tinged around the lips. Glowing purple liquid clung to their armor, pulsing with a faint, malicious light. Deep frost was sinking deeper, bypassing their physical defenses to strike at their core. "It's... it's freezing my magic," Xime whispered, his chest barely rising. Onyx reached out, grabbing Xime’s hands. Their connection flared, but instead of the usual burst of warmth, a wave of biting frost shot through Onyx's veins. Liquid twilight was trying to freeze their joint life force, targeting the very bond that kept them alive. "Don't let go," Onyx growled, squeezing Xime's hands. He pulled Xime close, trying to share whatever body heat he had left. But his own body was failing him, the shadow magic inside him turning to ice. They shivered together, huddled on the floating platform in the middle of a vast, silent underground ocean of corruption. Every breath felt like inhaling glass. That dark liquid around them seemed to hum, a low, vibratory frequency that vibrated in their bones. In the murky depths of the lake beneath them, a massive, glowing eye of pure twilight opens, staring directly into Onyx's soul.
