Chapter 20: The Sacrifice of Shadows

1.3k words

Frostbiting air scraped against Onyx’s throat with every shallow breath he took. Deep within the subterranean gut of Lightlark, the temperature had plummeted to a lethal degree, freezing the moisture in the air into tiny, floating needles of ice. Shadows clung to his high leather boots like desperate, weeping hands, whispering silent warnings that he chose to ignore. Ahead of them, the narrow stone path finally opened up into a massive, circular cavern carved directly into the black bedrock of the ridge. Runes of ancient, forgotten origin pulsed with an oily, grey luminescence across the surface of a raised stone slab situated in the center of the room. Crude carvings of weeping faces decorated the base of the structure, their eyes hollowed out to allow a thick, black fluid to slowly drip onto the frozen floor. Onyx stopped at the edge of the platform, his gaze sweeping the chamber. Darkness here felt alive, heavy and suffocating, pressing against his temples with a physical force that made his vision blur. Beside him, Xime pulled his woolen cloak tighter around his shoulders, his teeth clicking together in a rapid, uncontrolled rhythm. "We shouldn't be here," Xime whispered, his breath puffing in thick, white clouds that vanished into the gloom. "There is no other way to reach the core," Onyx replied, his voice flat, masking the sudden spike of dread in his chest. Every instinct he possessed screamed at him to turn back, to run from this cursed place and never look back. But running wasn't an option anymore, not when the eternal twilight was slowly choking the life out of their world. --- "It's freezing," Xime muttered, his teeth chattering violently as he stepped up beside Onyx. Gold-spun hair, usually bright as a summer noon, hung damp and lifeless against Xime's pale temples. Even in this suffocating cold, a faint, stubborn heat radiated from Xime's body, drawing Onyx in like a freezing man to a campfire. Onyx clenched his jaw, forcing his gaze away from the sharp curve of Xime's jawline and the gold light flickering weakly at his fingertips. Wanting him, or even allowing himself to care, was a liability Onyx knew he couldn't afford. Trust always ended in betrayal; his past had carved that lesson deep into his bones during the Great Eclipse when those he loved most turned their backs on him. Yet, looking at the ominous altar ahead, Onyx knew only one of them could walk away from this chamber with their power intact. Whispers echoed from the stone slab, rattling inside Onyx’s skull like dry leaves. "A sacrifice of essence," the voices hissed, cold and demanding. "Surrender the spark, or both shall feed the dark." Xime raised his right hand, his fingers trembling as he tried to summon a sphere of sunlight to push back the encroaching dark. Barely a flicker of gold responded, dying almost instantly against the heavy, suffocating pressure of the room. "My magic is fading," Xime whispered, panic bleeding into his bright, sapphire eyes. Onyx stared at his own hands, where dark tendrils of shadow magic coiled obediently, feeding on the ambient gloom of the cavern. His power was strong here, too strong, but what use was shadow magic in a world already dying of darkness? Lightlark didn't need more shadows; it needed the sun. It needed Xime's warmth, his brilliant radiance, his ability to bring life back to a frozen world. Resolution settled in Onyx's chest, cold and hard as iron. Without warning, he stepped toward the altar, his boots clicking sharply against the stone. "Onyx, wait!" Xime lunged forward, grabbing his arm. Warmth seared through Onyx's sleeve where Xime's hand gripped him, a sudden, burning contrast to the icy air. "Let me go," Onyx said, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. "My magic is worthless compared to yours," Onyx added, pulling away. "Are you insane?" Xime's grip tightened, his knuckles turning white. "I am not letting you throw your life away!" Xime yelled, his voice echoing off the cavern walls. "My life is a shadow," Onyx spat, his eyes flashing with sudden anger. "Your light is the only thing that can save this realm." Onyx shook his head, his jaw clenching. "Don't do this, Onyx!" Xime pleaded, his chest heaving as he stepped closer. Silently, Onyx wrenched his arm free, his shadow magic flaring to push Xime back. Black mist wrapped around Xime's ankles, pinning him to the spot for just a second. Onyx took three fast strides, standing directly before the pulsing stone slab. Cold dread pooled in his stomach as he raised his hands over the bleeding runes. "Take it," Onyx whispered to the dark. Before his fingers could touch the stone, a brilliant flash of gold shattered his shadow binds. Xime roared in fury, tackling Onyx from the side with a burst of desperate strength. They tumbled to the ground, rolling across the icy stone. "I told you, no!" Xime scrambled up first, his face flushed and his eyes wild with a terrifying resolve. Onyx reached out to grab him, but his fingers only brushed the fabric of Xime's shirt. Throwing himself forward, Xime landed flat on the sacrificial altar. Screams of pure agony tore from Xime's throat the instant his body made contact with the stone. Blindly, the runes began to feed, drinking Xime's radiant sun-magic with greedy, violent gulps. Gold light erupted from Xime's skin, but it was being twisted, turned into a sickening grey as the altar drained him. Panic, raw and absolute, shattered Onyx's icy resolve. Seeing Xime in pain, watching his light bleed away into the stone, felt like a blade twisting in Onyx’s chest. He couldn't let Xime die. Forgetting his fears, forgetting the rules he had built to protect his heart, Onyx leaped toward the altar. Wrapping his arms around Xime's torso, Onyx dragged him down with all his remaining strength. They crashed onto the dirt floor, panting and tangled together. Gold and black sparks hissed and crackled where their bodies pressed together. "Let me go!" Xime thrashed under Onyx's weight, his hands clawing desperately at Onyx’s leather armor. "I won't let you do this!" Onyx pinned Xime's wrists above his head, using his entire body to keep the stubborn light-wielder down. Sweat dripped from Onyx's brow, landing on Xime's flushed cheek. Their breaths mingled, hot and frantic in the freezing air. "You idiot," Xime gasped, his eyes wide, reflecting the dark hunger of the room. "You can't save me." Xime's chest rose and fell in jagged, uneven gasps. "Watch me," Onyx growled, his voice thick with a sudden, overwhelming emotion. Proximity, raw and undeniable, ignited a fire between them that neither could control. Looking down at Xime's parted lips, Onyx lost all rational thought. Driven by a desperate, breathless need, Onyx leaned down and slammed his mouth against Xime's. Shock vibrated through Xime's body, but he didn't pull away. Instead, Xime let out a ragged sob and kissed him back with equal, devastating hunger. Magic erupted between them like a physical force. Shadows coiled up Onyx's arms, wrapping around Xime's neck, while brilliant sun-rays pierced through the darkness, binding them together. It was a collision of opposites, a violent, raw harmonization of light and dark. Every touch burned; every press of their lips sent waves of pleasure and power crashing through their veins. Their elements didn't fight; they locked together, feeding off the physical attraction they had tried so hard to deny. Pressure built in the air, thick and deafening. A massive explosion of combined light and dark energy erupted from their joined bodies. Shockwaves ripped through the chamber, shattering the stone altar completely. Dust and sharp fragments of rock rained down around them as the force threw them apart. Onyx hit the ground, coughing and shielding his eyes from the blinding glare. Silence slowly reclaimed the ruined chamber. Struggling to his feet, Onyx looked down. The shattered altar reveals an ancient, obsidian box that slowly opens, releasing a black-and-gold butterfly that rests on Onyx's chest.
