Chapter 1: Damp Shadows and Razor Blades
1.3k words
Cold rain pelted Basti's face as he sprinted down the narrow alleyway.
Water pooled in his heavy leather boots, freezing and relentless, but his focus remained locked on the wet asphalt ahead.
Dark crimson smears stained the brick wall to his left, washing away under the heavy downpour.
Neon signs from the main street hummed a low, buzzing static, casting sickly pink and green light over the overflowing trash heaps.
Breathing hard, Basti gripped his service weapon, his knuckles white against the black steel.
Every instinct screamed at him to wait for backup, to listen for the sirens that were still several blocks away.
But backup was always too slow.
Memories of a cold morgue, of his younger brother Leo's pale, lifeless hand, clawed at the back of his mind.
He had been too late to save Leo.
He refused to be too late tonight.
Following the trail of blood, he pushed past a rusted iron gate that groaned loudly under his weight.
It led down a flight of cracked stone stairs into a subterranean cellar.
Heavy, damp air clung to his skin, smelling of old rot, wet coal, and copper.
Silence swallowed the storm's fury the moment he stepped inside.
Slowly, Basti lowered his flashlight, letting his eyes adjust to the dim, filtered light creeping through the street-level grate.
Shadows clung to the corners of the room like grease.
A soft, ragged gasp echoed from behind a stack of rotting wooden crates.
"Step out with your hands where I can see them," Basti commanded, his voice steady despite the frantic hammer of his heart.
He raised his gun, aiming it directly into the dark recess.
No one moved for a long, agonizing second.
Instead, a low, melodic chuckle drifted from the shadows, dripping with a strange, mocking warmth.
"Are you going to shoot me, detective?" a voice purred, raspy and breathless.
"Or are you just happy to find me?"
Out from behind the crates slipped a figure, leaning heavily against the damp brickwork for support.
It was him.
The legendary assassin known to the city's underworld as Jinx.
Silver hair clung to his forehead in wet strands, framing a face that was almost painfully beautiful.
His sharp jawline was smudged with dirt and dark blood, but it was his eyes that caught Basti off guard.
They were a striking, mismatched pair—one a piercing icy blue, the other a deep, dark grey.
They shone with a manic, dangerous brilliance, yet beneath the surface lay a hollow, echoing emptiness.
Jinx held a pale hand pressed firmly against his left side.
Dark blood seeped rapidly through his long, slender fingers, staining his torn black silk shirt.
Despite the life-threatening wound, a slow, predatory smirk curled his lips.
He took a faltering step forward, his knees buckling slightly before he caught his balance.
"Drop the weapon," Basti repeated, though his thumb instinctively nudged the safety back on.
"You're bleeding out. I can get you medical attention."
Jinx let out a soft huff of laughter, tilting his head back against the cold wall.
"Medical attention? From the state? I think we both know how that ends for someone like me."
Slowly, with deliberate, agonizing grace, Jinx let his bloody hand drop from his wound.
He reached for the collar of his wet shirt, his fingers trembling slightly as he began to undo the top buttons.
"Let’s make a deal, detective," Jinx murmured, his voice dropping to a seductive, velvety whisper.
"I know what men like you want when you catch a monster."
Basti frowned, his grip on his gun loosening. "What are you doing?"
"Paying my toll," Jinx replied simply, sliding another button free.
He parted the wet fabric, exposing the pale, lean line of his collarbone and the smooth expanse of his chest, marred only by the dark, oozing gash near his ribs.
He took another step closer, his mismatched eyes locking onto Basti's with a practiced, predatory intensity.
"I can be very cooperative," Jinx whispered, his tongue darting out to wet his bottom lip.
"You let me walk out of here, and I'll give you whatever you want. I can be whoever you need me to be tonight."
He reached out, his pale, cold fingers brushing against the lapel of Basti’s wet police jacket.
"Just name the price, handsome."
Basti stared at him, a sickening weight settling in his stomach.
He didn't see a lethal killer bargaining for his life.
He saw the vacant, hollow look behind Jinx's eyes—a gaze that had learned long ago that his body was nothing more than a currency.
It was a transactional look, devoid of any real desire, built entirely on survival and the expectation of abuse.
It was the same look Basti had seen on the faces of runaway kids and broken souls in the roughest corners of the city.
This man had been broken, trained, and sold until he believed his physical self was his only value.
A wave of fierce, protective anger surged through Basti, hot and suffocating.
It wasn't anger at Jinx, but at the monstrous forces that had shaped him into this.
His savior complex flared, blinding and absolute, overriding every rule in the police handbook.
He couldn't let this cycle continue.
Reaching out, Basti gripped Jinx's cold, trembling wrists.
He didn't pin him to the wall, and he didn't slide his hands down his body.
Instead, Basti gently but firmly pulled Jinx's hands away from his shirt, closing the wet fabric back over his exposed chest.
"No," Basti said, his voice dropping to a quiet, iron-hard resolve.
Jinx froze.
His smirk faltered, the seductive mask cracking like thin ice.
"What?" Jinx whispered, his voice losing its sultry edge, replaced by a raw, confused crack.
"I don't buy people," Basti said, looking directly into those fractured, mismatched eyes.
"And I don't use wounded men. Button your shirt."
Shock rippled across Jinx's face, swift and undeniable.
For a single, breathless second, the dangerous assassin vanished.
In his place stood a startled, deeply vulnerable young man, his lips parting in a silent gasp.
His chest heaved as he stared at Basti, utterly lost, his mind struggling to process a rejection that didn't come with violence.
"You're... you're lying," Jinx stammered, his fingers twitching against Basti's firm grip.
"Everyone wants something. Everyone takes."
"Not me," Basti said softly, his thumbs brushing lightly against the rapid pulse point on Jinx's wrist.
"I'm going to save your life, Jinx. Whether you like it or not."
Before Jinx could respond, a sharp, metallic burst of static shattered the tense silence of the cellar.
Basti's police radio, clipped to his shoulder, crackled violently to life.
"Basti! Do you copy? We found the blood trail leading down the alley near the old warehouse. What's your status?" his partner's voice boomed through the small speaker.
The spell broke instantly.
Jinx's eyes widened, the vulnerability vanishing behind a wall of cold, lethal instinct.
In a blur of movement too fast for Basti's exhausted reflexes to follow, Jinx wrenched his wrists free.
He lunged forward, slamming Basti hard against the damp brick wall.
The back of Basti's head cracked against the masonry, sending a flash of white light across his vision.
Before he could recover, his gun was knocked from his hand, clattering uselessly across the concrete floor.
A cold, sharp sliver of silver pressed hard against the sensitive skin of Basti’s jugular.
It was a razor blade, glinting in the dim light, held by a hand that was suddenly deadly steady.
Jinx pressed his body flush against Basti's, pinning him in place, his breath hot and ragged against Basti’s cheek.
The radio crackled again, louder this time.
"Basti! Respond! Are you down?"
Jinx leaned in closer, his mismatched eyes burning with a wild, desperate light.
"Choose your next breath very carefully, detective," Jinx whispered against his neck.
