Chapter 1: Soot, Rust, and Spilled Gold
1.3k words
Soot fell like black snow, dusting the rusted tin roofs of the Slag with a layer of toxic grime.
Logan Vance coughed, a violent, hacking spasm that bent him double over a pile of scrap metal.
Black liquid, thick and metallic, spattered against the damp bricks at his feet.
He wiped his lips with a trembling, scarred hand, staring at the dark, oily stain on his skin.
Orange-brown scales of rust-rot coated his knuckles, creeping slowly up his forearms like a parasitic fungus.
Every movement of his joints sent a grinding, agonizing screech through his nervous system.
Death was coming for him, and it was made of iron and rot.
Time was a luxury he didn't possess, but he forced his stiff legs to carry him forward.
Oakhaven had no mercy for the broken, especially not those discarded by the high and mighty Alchemical Houses.
Far above, the glittering spires of the elite pierced the toxic clouds, glowing with a clean, electric brilliance.
Down here in the belly of the metropolis, humanity drowned in the acidic runoff of their high-altitude labs.
Steam whistled through cracked pipes overhead, carrying the stench of sulfur and burning oil.
Suddenly, a high-pitched, desperate cough echoed from the narrow alleyway just ahead.
Logan froze, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
That cough was unmistakable.
Clara was out here.
His sister had promised to stay inside their makeshift hovel, but she must have gone searching for coal or clean water.
Slipping silently past a stack of corroded gears, Logan pressed his back against the cold brick wall.
Peering around the corner, his vision blurred with pain, but his mind focused instantly on the threat.
Three massive figures stood in the dead-end alley, their heavy brass-and-steel armor gleaming in the green glow of a flickering streetlamp.
House of Vance enforcers.
Their breastplates bore the crest of a clenched iron fist wrapping around a stylized gear.
Logan's jaw clenched, his teeth grinding together as hatred boiled in his chest.
Archon Theron Vance, his biological father and the supreme commander of the Iron Houses, had sent his hounds to purge the lower tier.
He had been discarded by that man years ago when his symptoms first appeared.
Clara cowered against a crumbling brick wall, her thin shoulders shaking violently under her threadbare shawl.
Her tiny hands clutched a half-empty sack of low-grade charcoal, her eyes wide with terror.
"Please," she sobbed, her voice cracking as the toxic air choked her weak lungs.
"I was only gathering scraps. I didn't do anything wrong."
A hulking enforcer stepped forward, the heavy pistons on his steam-powered knees hissing with pressurized force.
He didn't care about her excuses.
"Unregistered street vermin," the lead enforcer grunted, his voice distorted through a brass vocal modulator.
"Orders are absolute. Purge the block."
He raised a heavy, mechanical gauntlet, the iron fingers humming with kinetic energy.
Anger, hot and volatile, drowned out the agony of the rust-rot in Logan's veins.
His father's hounds were going to slaughter his sister for the crime of existing in the dark.
Looking around desperately, Logan's fingers brushed against a discarded, heavy iron pipe protruding from a pile of junk.
Its end was jagged, sheared off at a sharp, lethal angle.
He ripped it free with a silent, desperate heave, the rough metal biting into his peeling palms.
Blood dripped from his hands, mixing with the rust on the pipe.
He launched himself out of the shadows.
Before the nearest enforcer could turn, Logan drove the jagged pipe into the soft, unarmored joint behind the guard's knee.
Pressurized fluid sprayed across the bricks as the guard shrieked, his leg buckling instantly.
Logan didn't waste a second.
Using the momentum, he ripped the pipe free and swung it upward, catching the second enforcer under the chin.
Shattered teeth and dark blood erupted from the guard's visor as he fell backward, crashing into the filth.
Only the lead enforcer remained.
Spinning around, the giant raised his heavy gauntlet, his eyes burning with sudden fury behind his iron mask.
"Vermin!" he roared, swinging a massive fist that whistled through the heavy air.
Logan tried to duck, but the rust-rot in his joints flared with white-hot pain, slowing his reaction.
A heavy blow clipped his shoulder, throwing him violently against the brick wall.
Ribs cracked under the sheer force of the impact.
Black blood bubbled up in Logan's throat, choking him as he slid to the wet ground.
"Logan!" Clara screamed, scrambling backward in terror.
Heavy iron boots clicked against the stones as the lead enforcer closed the distance.
"A dying dog trying to bite," the enforcer sneered, raising his boot to crush Logan's skull.
Desperation lent Logan a sudden, vicious speed.
He thrust the jagged iron pipe upward with both hands, aiming for the narrow gap between the enforcer's chest plate and his collarbone.
Weight of the descending boot pushed Logan's arms down, but he held the angle.
With a wet, tearing sound, the rusted pipe drove deep into the enforcer's throat.
Gasping, the giant froze, his massive frame trembling as his life poured out over Logan.
A small brass flask, hidden beneath the enforcer's torn chest plate, shattered under the pressure of the impaling pipe.
From the cracked glass, a single, glowing golden droplet of liquid emerged.
It didn't flow like water; it floated, defying gravity, glowing with an intense, warm brilliance.
Primal Ichor.
Logan, lying flat on his back beneath the dying giant, had his mouth open, gasping for oxygen through his ruined lungs.
Gravity eventually claimed the golden droplet, and it fell straight into his open throat.
Fire exploded in his chest.
Logan thrashed on the ground, his eyes rolling back as his veins turned into rivers of molten gold.
Every nerve ending screamed in agonizing protest.
He could feel his own blood boiling, the black rust-rot being violently burned away by the radiant golden energy.
Orange-brown flakes on his skin dissolved rapidly, replaced by smooth, healthy flesh.
But the physical healing was only the beginning.
Images, foreign and violent, flooded into his brain with the force of a tidal wave.
He saw a brutal training academy, the sting of a whip on his back, the weight of a heavy broadsword.
He felt the satisfaction of his first kill, the cold satisfaction of executing helpless slum-dwellers.
These were the memories of the dead enforcer.
Logan absorbed them all, his muscles twitching as his body automatically memorized the combat forms, the footwork, the exact weight of a military-grade rifle.
Then, the golden light began to pull something back out of him.
A cold claw reached deep into his mind, wrapping around his own memories.
He tried to hold on, but a piece of his past was torn away like paper in a storm.
Images of a small cake with ten sputtering candles, his sister's younger face laughing, a wooden toy horse... all of it dissolved into gray smoke.
His tenth birthday was gone, erased completely to make room for the stolen memories of a murderer.
Logan gasped, sitting up abruptly as the golden light finally faded.
His breathing was perfectly clear.
His chest no longer burned with the toxic rust-rot.
Looking down at his hands, he saw no signs of the disease that had been killing him for years.
"Logan?" Clara whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at him from the shadows.
He stood up, his movements fluid and precise, possessing a martial grace he had never owned before.
But a hollow ache throbbed in his temple, a silent reminder of the price he had paid.
Before he could speak to his sister, a sharp mechanical clicking sound echoed through the alley.
As the dead enforcer's eyes turn stark white, a mechanical tracking device embedded in the corpse's collarbone clicks to life, projecting a holographic countdown timer of sixty seconds addressed directly to the House of Vance.
