The Tesla Harvest

“Bring the armor up! Flatten the whole homestead!” Commander Borus’s voice tore through the masonry, raw with fury. Olevia didn’t hesitate. The siphoned current hummed, a low, thrumming beat beneath her boots. She launched herself at the loose wooden stairs, scrambling up two steps at a time, Goran a blur of inky vapor at her heels. The old timbers groaned, but held. Above, the house was a storm of panicked shouts and shorting wires. The blue discharge had turned the interior into a strobe-lit nightmare, military personnel tripping over equipment, their faces illuminated by arcs of crackling static.
She burst through the trapdoor, finding Drevic already at the back entrance, his rifle slung, a small, grim smile on his face. “Nicely done, Olevia,” he muttered, grabbing her arm. “But we’ve got company.”
Through the front window, the treeline shuddered. Heavy boughs snapped and splintered with sickening cracks. Two monstrous shapes, low and squat, with multi-jointed tracks, tore through the ancient pines. Their armored hulls were a dull, oppressive grey, bristling with rotating turrets and what looked like massive, plasma-fed cannons. Rift-Tanks. Their advance was relentless, an earth-shaking rumble that vibrated through the very bedrock of the valley.

A cold, feral satisfaction settled in Olevia's ribs. “Move!” she commanded, pulling Drevic toward the main cabin door. “Get inside, cover the kids.”
She didn’t wait for his reply. The cabin was alive with a low, insistent thrum. Miro and Zosha stood pressed against the stone hearth, clutching the heavy iron poker and a sharpened pine stake just as she’d taught them. The air tasted of copper filings.
The Rift-Tanks broke free of the treeline, their steel tracks churning the frozen earth into black ruts. They were even larger up close, their cannons slowly elevating, tracking the cabin. The lead vehicle's main barrel glowed with a faint, sickly violet light, charging for a shot.
“Tesla Harvest!” Olevia roared. She slammed her palm onto the rough-hewn activation switch she’d hammered into the main support beam. It clicked with a satisfying thunk.
Above, the rotting roof shingles tore open. Not with a collapse, but with a controlled, explosive burst of timber and ice. From the gaping holes, four colossal retro-tech tesla-coils, crafted from salvaged copper and glowing vacuum tubes, rose into the misty air like colossal, skeletal metal trees. They whined, building a high-pitched crescendo, arcs of blue lightning dancing between their tips. The air shimmered, thick with ozone.
The Rift-Tank fired. A pulse of raw temporal energy tore toward the cabin, a shimmering purple spear. But it never reached its target. The tesla-coils pulsed, brighter, faster. With a deafening CRACK, a blinding bolt of raw current erupted from the tallest coil, lancing across the clearing. It struck the lead tank’s glowing cannon with the force of a thunderclap.
The violet glare dissipated instantly. The hull shuddered, its multi-jointed tracks locking. Its searchlights shattered in bursts of sparks. The crew hatch popped open with a puff of black smoke, and a soldier stumbled out, clutching his head, his eyes glazed. Then, with a series of grinding groans, the entire vehicle went dark, its massive engine sputtering into silence, leaving only the smell of scorched metal and fried wiring.
The second tank, still charging its weapon, suffered the same fate. A second bolt, even more spectacular, arced through the fog, slamming into its command module. Its drive gears seized, its turret slumped, and a plume of thick, oily black smoke began to pour from its vents. In moments, both behemoths were inert, crippled hulks on the ravaged landscape.
From Yevra’s house, Borus screamed, a sound of utter disbelief and rage that carried across the clearing even over the lingering hiss of scorched air. “Impossible! How?!”
Meanwhile, in the chaos of sparks and silenced tanks, Yevra saw her chance. From the corner of her ditch, she’d watched the blinding display, her mouth twitching with panic and greed. With the military distracted, and Olevia’s focus on the front, the back of the cabin was undefended. She scurried through the trampled snow, a hunched, desperate figure, keeping low beneath the windows. Her eyes were fixed on the small, warped door leading to Olevia’s root cellar, the only place she knew Olevia kept any substantial stores.
She reached the cellar door, her fingers fumbling with the rusted iron latch. It gave way with a squeak. A triumphant, greedy smile stretched her lips. She slipped inside, met by the damp, earthy smell of stored potatoes and dried chicory roots. “Mine,” she rasped, her hands already reaching for the sacks.
A small, clear voice cut through the stillness. “Looking for something, Grandmother?”
Yevra froze, her head snapping up. Miro stood at the base of the wooden steps, holding the heavy iron poker like a seasoned guard. Behind him, Zosha stood silent beside the door frame, her small hand already closing around the drop-bar. Her face showed no hesitation.
“You… you little brats!” Yevra shrieked, her voice echoing in the confined space. “Get out of my way! This is my family’s food! You owe me!” She lunged, a desperate, clawing movement toward Miro.
Miro didn’t flinch. He swung the poker, not to strike, but to block, forcing her back. Zosha, with a strength that belied her size, pulled the heavy latch shut. The bar slid home with a resonant THUD that sealed Yevra’s fate.
“No! Let me out! You can’t leave your grandmother to freeze!” Yevra’s frantic pounding and muffled screams began to rise from beneath the cabin, a desperate, fading sound against the backdrop of the clearing. Miro merely met Zosha’s gaze. A shared, grim satisfaction passed between the twins. They then turned and marched back into the main cabin, their footsteps firm.
Olevia, alerted by the sudden quiet from the back, saw them emerge. “Everything alright?” she asked, a small smile playing on her lips, already knowing the answer. Miro nodded once. Zosha gave a small, almost imperceptible shake of her head toward the back door, a clear signal. Olevia's smile widened. Good. Very good.
The tesla-coils continued to hum, discharging faint blue sparks into the overcast sky, but the silence of the disabled tanks was short-lived. A new sound began to rise from the deep woods, beyond the immediate battleground. It was a guttural, tearing roar, far deeper than any beast. The air itself began to vibrate with a low, agonizing groan. The mist in the valley, which had always been thick and eerie, now swirled with an unnatural violet hue, coalescing into what looked like a massive, churning vortex in the distance. The ground beneath their feet began to tremble, steadily, violently. It was no longer the impact of tanks, but the shudder of reality itself unraveling. Drevic stumbled, catching himself on a beam, his face pale. “The rift…” he whispered, his eyes fixed on the distant, churning void. “It’s gone critical. It’s collapsing the entire valley.”
