Chapter 6 of 10

A Rival's Debt

868 words

Kielo gasped, a sound torn from her throat. This was not a wound she recognized, not a typical Aberration’s touch. Black lines branched across his collarbone, thick as corded twine. “What… what is this?” Sampo’s voice, cracked on the syllables. He took an unsteady step forward, staring at Antero's spasming ribs. Pikka, perched on a jutting spire of twisted rock, chittered with unusual intensity. The glass ampoule he had swiped from the citadel laboratory, caught in his tiny claw, threw an oily green sheen over the stone. It vibrated, a low hum audible even over Antero’s ragged breathing. Kielo didn’t answer Sampo. Her training, usually so rigid and precise, seemed to fray at the edges. She knew what this was. Taint gathered along the flesh, blackening the skin as if scalded by oil. “He’s… he’s collapsing,” Sampo stammered, his hand hovering uselessly. “Can’t you do something, Kielo?” Her mind raced, sifting through decades of taught protocols and forbidden texts. There was one technique, an old, dangerous practice, rarely attempted, never officially sanctioned. It was meant for field trauma, when an operative's internal luminance gave way—a direct channel of her own marrow-heat into the dying vessel. The order forbade it as treasonous heresy, but Antero would not survive another minute. “Stand back, Sampo,” she commanded, her voice raw with urgency. She knelt lower, her hands hovering over Antero’s chest, the black streaks twitching against his sternum. She pressed her bare palms flat against his sternum and shut her eyes. Amber warmth surged along her forearms, bleeding into his cold skin. A groan escaped Antero’s lips, a sound of agony and resistance. His body arched, fighting against the invasive, healing energy. Kielo gritted her teeth, pushing harder, focusing her intent. The transfer was agonizing, a searing pain at the core of her own being as her vital energy poured into his poisoned form. She felt the immediate recoil, a frost that numbed her wrists, but she held her ground. As the light flowed, Pikka shrieked. The ampoule in his hand flared an incandescent cyan. It became scorching hot, too much for the sprite to hold. With a startled squeak, Pikka dropped it. The vial hit the twisted rock beside Antero’s head with a sharp crack, shattering instantly. A concentrated, shimmering serum, thick as sap, oozed from the broken glass. The moment the serum touched Antero’s skin, it reacted violently. The dark streaks on his chest snapped tight, then began to recede like scorched thread. A hiss, like superheated air escaping a pressure valve, emanated from his body. The fluid sank deep into the dermal pores, drawing off the black lattice. He gasped, a guttural sound, as a surge of energy, both painful and profoundly cleansing, drove through his chest. As the black network faded, the gold warmth spilling from Kielo's fingers hit an unyielding barrier. It didn’t just merge; it *changed*. It fractured, mirroring something within Antero, something distinct and powerful. Kielo's eyelids flew open. Her own channel of light was turning back on itself, mirrored and drawn down into his marrow. [Skill Resonance detected. Radiance skill cataloged.] Sampo, who had watched the dramatic scene unfold with a mixture of terror and awe, saw it too. He watched the yellow glow around Kielo's hands, then saw the dull amber haze tracing Antero's shoulders, throbbing in identical cadence. It was the same sensation he sometimes felt, a subtle drain, a faint chill that followed moments when Antero displayed inexplicable bursts of power. “No,” Sampo whispered, his face draining of color. “No, it can’t be.” His gaze darted from the now-faintly glowing serum remnants to Antero’s still form, then to Kielo’s face, which held a dawning comprehension, a look of betrayal and fierce anger. “You’ve been… you’ve been taking it. My Radiance. My power.” His voice rose, raw with accusation, as the realization solidified into sickening certainty. “You’ve been *stealing* from me!” Antero coughed, a dry, rattling sound, his eyes fluttering open. The pain was still immense, but the encroaching darkness had receded, replaced by a dull ache. He saw Kielo, pale and trembling, pulling her hands away from him, her face a mask of furious revelation. He saw Sampo, trembling with a different kind of anger, his chin trembling in disgust. He saw Pikka, chittering nervously from his perch. The secret was out. All of it. The skill mimicry, the drain, the truth of his anomaly. His carefully constructed facade lay in ruins. Before anyone could speak, before the accusations could truly break loose, a blinding flare of harsh, white-hot glare burst from the passage ahead. A guttural shout, sharp and authoritative, cut through the tension. “Hold! We have located the anomaly!” Heavy boots stomped into the clearing. Six figures, clad in the stark white and gold ceremonial armor of the Concord’s elite Purifier squad, emerged from the distortions. At their head stood a tall, imposing woman with a severe, elegant face and eyes like chipped obsidian. Kielo’s former mentor, Archon Valeriana. Her gaze swept over the scene, then fixed, with icy precision, on Antero. The Purifier squad raised their specialized Radiance Disruptors, their brass muzzles whining with built-up charge. They were not here for rescue. They were here for him.
