Chapter 8 of 10

The Unspoken Blade

763 words

The stone arena fell silent under the cold gusts slicing through the high arches. Dzian walked to the chalk circle at the center, his posture relaxed, stopping twelve paces from Joric. Kymos pulsed from Joric’s form, a crimson sheath around his hands, ready to tear. “The Iron Fang Dojo’s ‘Crimson Maw’ style,” Dzian stated, his voice carrying clearly in the sudden silence. “Designed to overwhelm with brute force and feigned openings. Crude, yet effective against the unwary.” He made no move to draw a weapon. Joric scoffed, a guttural sound. “Crude? You dare—!” He lunged, a blur of red Kymos, his open hand striking like a viper. It was the ‘Jaw-Shatter Palm,’ a technique designed to disable a foe with a single, concussive impact. Dzian did not evade. Instead, his hand rose. Not to block, but to meet Joric’s attack with an open palm of his own. A faint, silver Kymos shimmered around Dzian’s hand, so subtle it was almost invisible. The palms met with a dull *thwack*. Joric staggered back, a shock of pain lancing up his arm. His hand throbbed as if he’d struck solid stone, yet Dzian remained unmoved, his expression still calm. Dzian’s hand showed neither bruise nor welt. From the high stands, a robed figure, a Sky-Phalanx Academy proctor named Elder Vaas, leaned forward, his ancient eyes narrowed. “Impossible,” he murmured, a faint tremor in his voice. “The technique… no, the principle. The subtle Kymos flow… It’s the ‘Void-Palm Reversal.’ A lost Prime variant of the Azure Hand Forms. It should be extinct.” Joric, enraged by the unexpected repulse, roared and drew his short-bladed fighting knife, its edge humming with Kymos. “Then let’s see if your palms can stop this!” He moved with a flurry of slashes, the signature ‘Fang-Dance Flurry,’ a rapid succession of cuts aimed at disrupting balance and opening defenses. Dzian’s response was fluid. His body swayed like a reed in a current, each subtle shift of weight, each almost imperceptible tilt of his head, causing Joric’s blade to whistle through empty air. He never moved more than was necessary. Each of Joric’s ‘secret’ angles, each feint, was met not with a block, but with a perfectly timed half-step, a rotation of a shoulder, a barely-there sidestep that negated the attack before it could even develop. Dzian’s hands moved then, not to fight, but to guide. One hand gently pushed Joric’s elbow, forcing a slash wide. The other, with almost no force, tapped Joric’s hip, causing him to overextend. Joric’s own momentum became his enemy. He stumbled, his blade clattering to the ground. Before Joric could recover, a faint silver sheen appeared in Dzian’s hand. It wasn’t a blade, but a Kymos-formed representation, a perfect replica of the ‘Sun-Shatter Sword Form’ he had taught Senya. The Kymos-blade, impossibly sharp, darted forward. Not with a brutal cutting force, but with the controlled elegance of a master calligrapher’s brush. The blade traced a line across Joric’s cheek, drawing a single bead of blood. Then, with a flash, it appeared at Joric’s throat, its tip resting lightly against his pulsing jugular. Joric froze, paralyzed under the cold steel-light of the energy edge. The arena stayed quiet as stone. Dzian leaned in, his voice a low, almost imperceptible murmur, audible only to Joric. “Your master, Old Man Kormath, the one who taught you the Iron Fang style? He withheld the true principles. He taught you an incomplete, flawed technique. He never wanted you to surpass him. He built a cage around your potential, Joric, ensuring you would forever remain his second-best.” Joric’s face, already pale from the Kymos-blade at his throat, drained of all remaining color. His pupils shrank as an understanding settled in. He remembered the inconsistencies, the blank spaces in the scrolls, the strange way Kormath always seemed to anticipate his breakthroughs and then subtly redirect him. The whispers, the petty jealousies of other students… it all coalesced into a devastating, undeniable truth. Dzian slowly withdrew the Kymos-blade. It dissipated into fine silver motes, leaving Joric kneeling on the arena floor, physically unharmed but hollowed of will. He stared blankly ahead, the fight drained from his eyes, replaced by a hollow despair. An Academy proctor, not Elder Vaas but a younger, stern-faced woman in indigo robes, descended into the arena. Her gaze swept over the kneeling Joric, then settled on Dzian, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. Her voice, amplified by Kymos, boomed through the arena. “Attention, competitors! The exam’s format has changed. All teams will now proceed to the second stage: The Umbral Labyrinth.”
