Master Hectas’s final clap echoed, a flat, dry snap that died against the vault's stone ribs. The crimson wash from the boiling vat painted his grin in harsh, rust-colored angles. “Galderos, my boy,” Hectas purred, his voice now devoid of its usual avuncular warmth, replaced by a silken menace. “You look… surprised. Did you truly believe your little parlor trick was unique to you? Did you imagine I hadn’t studied every anomaly, every variable, in the System’s grand design?” My gut twisted. Zinon shifted beside me, his hand already hovering over a binding rune etched into his gauntlet. Lucera’s gaze hardened as her fingers tightened along her brass calipers. “The 0%,” Hectas continued, gesturing to my chest where my absent numbers would normally hover. “An ideal alibi. A blank slate. Who would ever suspect the weakest student, the one with no quantifiable talent, of being the catalyst for Oraz’s salvation? Or, indeed, its ultimate undoing?” He spread his hands wide, taking in the boiling vat, the monstrous silhouette within. “You, Galderos, were an impeccable smokescreen. The public enemy, the heretic, drawing all attention away from the true masterstroke. While the Conservatory mourned its fallen ‘hero’—you—I was consolidating power, preparing Oraz for a greater threat, a threat only I could foresee, only I could tame.” “You created this?” Lucera’s voice was a strained whisper, cutting through the thrum of the black mana. Hectas chuckled, a dry, reedy sound. “The Karkara was merely an appetizer. A test of the System’s malleability. The true spectacle begins with the Apex Titan. And then, when I stand as Oraz’s undisputed protector, you, Galderos, will be nothing more than a footnote. A cautionary tale.” He flicked his wrist, a dismissive, almost elegant gesture. A low, resonant hum vibrated through the laboratory's thick walls, vibrating along conduit channels. Copper coated my tongue, the familiar static prickling my knuckles as System interference bit down. [Apex Ledger: Conservatory Override Protocol Engaged. I scrabbled, my fingers closing on empty air. The satchel ripped across the open air, arcing towards Hectas’s outstretched hand like a magnetized projectile. “No!” I lunged to snatch the strap, but a pneumatic shock hammered into my sternum, driving me back. The strap slapped flush into Hectas’s palm, the old man testing its balance with a sneer. [Apex Ledger: Sub-Optimal Asset Retention. User: Galderos Muntaz. Air scraped uselessly in my windpipe. My only weapon, my only defense, was gone. The Apex Titan in the vat chose that moment to stir. The black mana churned, forming a gaping maw within its inky depths. Two immense, glowing orbs, like molten suns, flared open, fixing on us with predatory intent. The entire vat shivered, the reinforced glass groaning under immense pressure. A monstrous, multi-jointed limb, scaled and barbed, battered the transparent barrier, spiderwebbing fractures across the glass. “Lucera, his book!” Zinon barked, his stare snapping between the awakening titan and Hectas’s sneering face. “Get out! Now!” Before I could process his words, before Lucera could even respond, Zinon moved. He was a blur of motion, abandoning any semblance of strategic thought. His flawless binding scores, the gilded veneer of the Conservatory’s golden boy, meant nothing to him. With a guttural roar, Zinon launched himself, not at Hectas, but directly at the immense vat. “Zinon, no!” I yelled, but it was already too late. He collided with the fractured glass, a fly thrown against the tank. He thrust his gauntlet forward, attempting to initiate a binding sequence, a futile gesture against a creature clearly not meant for conventional taming. [Apex Ledger: Sub-Optimal Taming Attempt. Instead, the creature in the vat, enraged by the nuisance, lunged. A massive, shadowy limb, thick as an Orazian skytower, smashed through the already weakened glass. It struck Zinon, sending him skittering across the floorboards like a broken puppet. He hit the far wall with a wet thud, collapsing into a heap, his pristine uniform now blood-splattered and torn, his breathing ragged. [Apex Ledger: Catastrophic Injury Sustained. User: Zinon Castra. She snatched the scattered, blood-spattered leaves of Hectas’s logistical records—the wave deployment schedules—from the floor. She locked on me for a fraction of a second. Then, with a speed born of pure survival instinct, she darted into the ventilation shaft they had used to enter, vanishing into the smog-choked labyrinth. Hectas snarled, turning from the now-breaching Titan towards me, his eyes alight with fury. “Foolish boy! You think a few pages will stop me?” He snapped his fingers. Heavily armed Enforcers, clad in menacing black armor, materialized from hidden access points, their energy batons humming with dangerous potential. “Secure the heretic,” Hectas commanded, his voice cold. “He has a public appointment.” The Enforcers crashed inward. I tried to conjure ink, to fight back, but without my sketchbook, without my tools, I was nothing. My mana felt sluggish, unresponsive. A baton cracked my ribs, followed by an iron boot against my temple. Darkness encroached around the edges of my vision. I crumpled, tasting iron, the faint scent of ozone filling my nostrils as anti-mana cuffs clicked into place around my wrists, sealing off the last flicker of my abilities. Rough hands dragged me, my body a dead weight, through the labyrinthine corridors of the facility. The roaring of the unleashed Apex Titan, the screams of distant guards, faded into a dull throb in my skull. Consciousness slipped in and out, until finally, I was upright, leaning against rough wood, the metallic tang of fear thick in the air. The smell of pitch and dry kindling was overwhelming. My eyes, still blurry, struggled to focus. I was in the heart of the Grand Plaza. Thousands of faces stared back at me, a sea of hostile, judging eyes. Above them, the floating halos of their social standing shimmered. And above my head, a new glyph cluster, brighter and wider than any before, blared a single message.
