Chapter 9 of 10
Flesh Against Steel

The roar from the titan mecha vibrated through Yanshan’s bones, a brutal assault. The looming obsidian machine, impossibly massive, dwarfed the entire staging bay. Its multi-barreled fusion cannon, trained on Yanshan, pulsed with sickly green light. The cryo-engine strapped to his back dug chilled metal hard against his spine.
“Somatic Heretic,” the officer's voice boomed, rich with contempt. “Look at you. A primitive ape, clinging to obsolete flesh. This station, this entire sector, is a cancerous growth. Soon to be excised. You, Yanshan, are merely a particularly stubborn tumor.”
The obsidian mecha moved with terrifying speed for its size, a blur of dark metal. Its left arm, a colossal appendage, transformed. Metallic plates shifted, whirred, and then a blade of pure concentrated light, easily a hundred meters long, snapped into existence. It hummed with a sound that clawed at the air itself, the heat from it warping the visible light.
“Watch, little ape,” the pilot snarled. “Watch as your ‘cult’ is erased by true power.” The energy blade arced down, a devastating sweep designed to bisect the chamber and everyone in it.
Yanshan didn’t flinch. He planted his bare feet, qi gathering in his palms, a faint, almost invisible shimmer around his hands. He met the glowing edge, not with defiance, but with precise redirection. The building-sized energy sword connected with his open palms, not with a clash, but with a horrifying, grinding screech. The air around him detonated outwards in a visible shockwave, dust and loose debris blasting across the launch deck. The impact drove shuddering shock up his arms that threatened to tear his shoulders from their sockets, but his stance held. He twisted his wrists, channeling the destructive force, and for a split second, the mecha’s blade was pushed *upwards*, past him, gouging a molten furrow in the reinforced ceiling.

The pilot's voice sputtered, a crackle of disbelief, “What in the—Impossible!”
“Impossible is just a word for those who lack discipline,” Yanshan retorted, his voice surprisingly calm amidst the chaos. He felt the pain, the burning in his hands, but his focus was absolute.
From the corner of his eye, Yanshan saw Toris. The usually timid cadet, now a blur of frantic motion, wrestled with the controls of a heavy-duty industrial loader. The vehicle, designed for moving multi-ton supply crates, rumbled to life. Toris, his face a mask of desperate focus, slammed the throttle forward. The loader, its reinforced chassis groaning, picked up surprising speed, its impact-rated front shovel aimed directly at the boss mecha’s knee joint.
“For the Ashen Sect!” Toris shrieked, a raw, almost animalistic cry. He hit the mecha’s left knee with a sickening crunch of tortured metal. The colossal machine shuddered. Its complex articulation system, a marvel of future engineering, visibly buckled inwards. A panel sparked, then blew out, showering the deck with molten shrapnel. The mecha, off-balance, staggered back, its fusion cannon momentarily thrown off target.
“An opening!” Talan’s voice, sharp and clear, cut through the comms. Yanshan glanced up. Talan, freshly awakened and a livid crimson mark blooming on his neck where Yanshan had struck him, was already strapped into a salvaged sniper-mech. It was a Frankenstein’s monster of spare parts, barely held together, but the long-barreled railgun attached to its right arm was humming with purpose.
“Target acquired!” Talan yelled, his brow furrowed in concentration. The sniper-mech locked onto the mecha’s exposed knee joint. A searing blue beam of pure kinetic force lanced out, striking the compromised armor with pinpoint accuracy. The wound in the mecha’s leg widened, spitting out more sparks and smoke. Another shot followed, then another, a relentless barrage. Talan wasn't just shooting; he was methodically stripping away the machine’s defense, each shot landing with surgical precision. He was protecting Yanshan, clearing a path.
Yanshan didn’t hesitate. He surged forward, a living projectile. His fists, cloaked in an almost tangible aura of dark qi, became battering rams. He slammed a punch into the damaged knee. The qi erupted, a contained explosion that ripped through the weakened armor. More sparks, more smoke, and then a sickening *groan* as a major hydraulic line burst, spraying pressurized fluid across the deck.

Yanshan moved with a terrifying grace, a dance of destruction. He vaulted onto the crippled leg, using the mecha’s own bulk as a launchpad. He aimed for the hip joint, another critical articulation point. Talan’s railgun fire kept the pilot's attention, forcing the mecha to contort, exposing weak points. Yanshan’s fists hammered away, each strike a micro-explosion of concentrated force. Armor plates buckled, then tore free, scattering like discarded scales.
The titan mecha roared, an electronic bellow of fury. The energy sword swung wildly, trying to swat Yanshan off, but Yanshan was too fast, too fluid. He was a phantom, weaving through the chaos, driven by a singular, violent purpose. He reached the mecha’s torso, its massive armaments swinging uselessly above him. He didn’t stop, didn’t pause. He focused his qi, a deep, resonant hum building within his core, the ultimate technique of the Ashen Bone Cult.
He pulled his arms back, then unleashed a furious, dual-palm strike directly into the mecha’s reinforced cockpit viewport. It wasn’t a punch; it was a detonation. The qi, infused with the crushing force of a mountain, met the multi-layered transparisteel. The air shrieked, then *imploded*. The viewport, designed to withstand asteroid impacts, spiderwebbed, then shattered inwards with a deafening report, raining jagged shards into the cockpit.
Before the officer could even register the breach, Yanshan plunged his arm through the opening. His hand closed around the pilot's throat, fingers digging into flesh, lifting the heavily armored commander from the command seat. Yanshan pulled him out, a trophy, holding him aloft for the cadets to see. The officer, choked and gasping, his face purpling, dangled helplessly in Yanshan’s grip, the epitome of the Hegemony’s power reduced to a struggling, pathetic figure.
“Your power,” Yanshan growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble, “is a lie. Flesh endures.” He dropped the pilot, letting him crumple to the deck, coughing and sputtering like a common ruffian.
Just then, the orbital station plunged into absolute darkness. The dying sun, visible through the shattered bay doors, had abruptly, horrifically, turned pitch black, consuming all light. The countdown in Yanshan’s vision, a stark red overlay, flashed: **00:00:58**
