Chapter 1 of 10

The Narcoleptic Carry

1.4k words

A jarring clang rattled the chipped ceramite mug on the table, sloshing lukewarm, bitter ‘synth-coffee’ across Panya’s wrist. Her eyes, heavy-lidded and rimmed with a faint purple bruise of exhaustion, cracked open. The world, a blurry mess of flickering neon and the incessant hum of the city’s air-skimmers, slowly sharpened. She’d been mid-nap, head pillowed on her folded arms, in the least frequented corner of the Gloombean Pit, her current office and occasional bedroom. “Pan! Wake up, you lump of unmotivated carbon!” Kiran Nuvola, the café’s owner and Panya’s reluctant booking agent, leaned over her, an unlit data-stick clutched like a weapon. His wiry frame vibrated with a manic drive that Panya found personally offensive. “Five more minutes, Kiran,” Panya mumbled, burrowing deeper into her arms, the synth-coffee’s stickiness a minor discomfort. “The ‘Synapse Clash’ server reset wiped my ranked points. I need to dream about revenge.” Kiran slapped the table again. “Revenge can wait. This is better than revenge. This is *retirement money*. Enough to buy a cryo-sleep pod and hibernate until the next glacial epoch!” That got Panya’s attention. Her head lifted slowly, one eye squinting at Kiran’s face. “How much?” “A hundred grand in credit-chips just to sign the contract. Another five hundred k if you win the Grand Championship with them. And a lifetime supply of instant noodles, probably,” Kiran gabbled, thrusting a datapad at her. “The Sunfire Stags! Top-tier professional team! One of their carries just broke his thumb trying to high-five a holographic fan.” Panya scrolled through the contract, the numbers making her half-asleep brain twitch. Six hundred grand. That was ten years of undisturbed sleep, minimum. But then her eyes snagged on a line item: *‘Mandatory cohabitation at the Sunfire Stags’ gaming house, all-male roster.’* “All-male?” Panya’s voice was flat. She ran a hand over her short-cropped hair, then instinctively adjusted the loose, baggy combat jacket that helped obscure her form. Her chest, already minimized by years of wearing tight sports wraps under her clothes, felt suddenly conspicuous. Kiran’s grin was predatory. “Details, details! You’re Pan, the legendary ‘Silent Blade’ booster, no one’s ever seen your face, let alone your… other details. You’ve been living as ‘Pan’ online for years. Just bind a little tighter, deepen your voice when you need to, and grunt a lot. It’s Synapse Clash, not a fashion show!” He leaned in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “They’re desperate. They need *you*. Your ‘ghost-step’ technique is unparalleled.” Panya sighed, the deep, world-weary sigh of someone who wished the world would just leave her alone. Six hundred grand. A decade of sleep. It was a tempting siren song. “Fine,” she grumbled, her finger hovering over the digital signature line. “But if they make me wake up before noon, I’m quitting.” Hours later, Panya, now ‘Pan’ in full, stood at the entrance of the Sunfire Stags’ gaming house. It was less a house and more a gleaming leviathan of chrome and polarized glass, nestled amidst the towering data-columns of the city’s esports district. Inside, the mansion was a whirlwind of motion. Holographic screens pulsed with game data, robotic cleaning drones whirred silently, and the air thrummed with the focused intensity of young men glued to their training rigs. It was the antithesis of the Gloombean Pit. “You must be Pan!” A voice boomed, cutting through the din. A broad-shouldered young man with a neatly sculpted black undercut and eyes like flint strode towards her. This was Tarek, the team’s star assault specialist, and by all accounts, a relentless try-hard. “Welcome to the Stags. I’m Tarek. And let me be clear: I don’t care what ridiculous online legend you are. I’ve seen your boosting stats. You’re a ghost. You carry dead weight. And from the look of you, you’re about to fall asleep standing up.” Tarek’s gaze, sharp and dismissive, raked over Panya’s slouching form, her half-closed eyes, and the general air of profound disinterest. He clearly found her infuriating. “I’m not dead weight,” Panya mumbled, stifling a yawn. “Just… conserving energy.” Tarek’s lip curled. “Conserving fuel? We’re about to enter the most brutal tournament cycle in pro history! There’s no room for slackers here. You want to prove you belong? Right now. A 1v1. Veridian Spires Battleground. Let’s see if your ‘ghost-step’ is more than just a myth concocted by desperate casuals.” A crowd of curious teammates had already gathered, drawn by Tarek’s confrontational tone. A challenge on day one. Panya just wanted to find her assigned room and collapse. But the glint in Tarek’s eye, the sheer, unadulterated disdain, pricked at something in her. Laziness was a choice, not an inability. “Fine,” Panya said, her voice surprisingly clear despite her fatigue. “But if I win, you owe me a week of undisturbed sleep.” Tarek barked a laugh. “If you win, I’ll personally carry you to bed myself!” They stood in separate, gleaming VR pods, the clear canopy sealing over Panya with a soft hiss. The cool hum of the pod’s processors was like a lullaby. Panya leaned back in the ergonomic chair, her eyes already drifting shut as the system initiated the neural link. The simulated world of Clash, the verdant, towering pinnacles of the battleground, bloomed around her, vibrant and deadly. [SYNAPSE CLASH: MATCH START – VERIDIAN SPIRES BATTLEGROUND] [OPPONENT DETECTED: TAREK (ASSAULT SPECIALIST)] [PLAYER: PAN (CARRY)] Panya’s head lolled to the side, a soft snore escaping her lips. She was out cold. Her hands, however, were a different story. They twitched, fingers dancing over the holographic controls with an eerie precision, muscle memory taking over with the fluid grace of a pre-programmed combat automaton. On the other side of the arena, Tarek, his mecha-rig a hulking figure clad in crimson armor, sprinted across the overgrown platform, his particle cannon spitting crimson fire. He moved with practiced aggression, searching for his prey. *Pan was probably still trying to figure out the controls,* he thought, a smirk touching his lips. Then a blur. His targeting reticle, designed to lock onto any movement, struggled to track. Pan’s model, a lithe figure in midnight-blue stealth plating, was a phantom. It flowed through cover, a whisper of movement, silent as a falling leaf, yet impossibly fast. The legendary ‘ghost-step’ wasn’t just a myth. It was a terrifying reality. Tarek roared, firing wildly as Pan darted around him, a digital dagger flashing, then vanishing. A critical hit. Then another. And another. Pan’s frame, still, silent, lethal, like a predator toying with its prey. Tarek’s health bar plummeted. [TAREK: HEALTH CRITICAL] [TAREK: DEFEATED] [VICTORY: PAN] The VR pod hissed open. Panya blinked, slowly sitting up, the lingering drowsiness battling with the sudden influx of reality. She stretched, a long, languid stretch, as the other players stared, their mouths agape. Tarek, his face flushed with fury and humiliation, ripped off his neural interface, his chest heaving. “That was… impossible!” he spat, pointing a trembling finger at Panya. “You barely moved! You were… you were sleeping! You cheated!” Panya just shrugged, a small, unconcerned gesture. “Muscle memory. Happens all the time.” She noticed the burning intensity in his eyes. He genuinely believed she’d cheated. Good. Maybe he’d leave her alone now. “He didn’t cheat, Tarek.” A new voice, calm and warm as sun-warmed synth-silk, cut through the tension. Zaidu, the team captain, emerged from the crowd, his smile gentle, his dark eyes radiating an earnest kindness. He had a mop of unruly ebony hair and a lean, athletic build. “Pan’s just… uniquely talented.” Zaidu extended a hand, his touch light and unexpectedly soft as his fingers brushed Panya’s. “Welcome to the Sunfire Stags, Pan. We’re glad to have you.” A sharp tingle prickled across Panya’s skin. A sudden hitch caught in her ribs. It wasn’t unpleasant, just… startling. She’d never felt anything quite like it. Zaidu’s eyes, full of genuine warmth, crinkled at the corners. He was, Panya grudgingly admitted, really quite handsome. The thought, foreign and unwelcome, made her stomach clench with a tiny, panicked flutter. Tarek, meanwhile, was still fuming. “I’ll find out how you did that, Pan. You won’t get away with this. I swear, I’ll expose you.” Panya merely yawned again, a wide, unhurried gesture. She just wanted her room. She just wanted sleep. Her gaze drifted to the personal datapad she’d been handed upon arrival. A red notification light pulsed insistently. She tapped it open, expecting an onboarding schedule or team rules. Instead, a block of encrypted text filled the screen, ending with a single, stark line. [MESSAGE: CANDIDATE 774 ACQUIRED.]
