Social Sabotage

The broadcast dissolved from the public panels of Starkridge, leaving behind only the shimmering holo-invitation to Kavien Royston’s gala. Zerya Voss, perched on a holo-stool in her private command center within the Apex Spire, a single silver braid trailing over one shoulder, watched the fading light. Tock Bixby, hyperactively adjusting the haptic feedback on his wrist-mounted console, twitched. His fingers danced over the chromic keys, prepping their breach-rig for the Plaza. He hummed a discordant tune, a nervous habit. “The mandatory biometric scan for entry,” Zerya mused, a sliver of amusement in her voice. “How utterly predictable. He thinks a high-resolution epidermal scan will stop the ‘Phantom Lawyer’ from making an appearance.” Tock snorted. “He thinks a high-resolution epidermal scan stops *anyone* from making an appearance, boss. You could waltz in as a potted fern if you wanted to. But seriously, the Plaza blueprints are tight. Vander’s still trying to get the VIP floor schematics. Says their internal network is guarded by a lethal gatekeeper.” “Vander is exceptionally capable,” Zerya said, a warmth she rarely allowed in her tone. “He’ll get them.” She turned her attention to a real-time feed of a different event: a pre-gala mixer, a more exclusive gathering of Kavien’s corporate allies and their favored socialites. Kavien himself was there, a predatory smile fixed on his face, his arm draped possessively around a woman with meticulously sculpted auburn hair. The heiress to the Vaine-Stratos luxury airship line stood beside him, poised as a prospective trophy. “Tock, what’s the status on the neural feedback relay for… our uninvited guest?” Zerya asked, her gaze fixed on the heiress, who was currently attempting to charm an elderly industrialist with forced laughter. “Oh, uh, just finishing the final loop, boss,” Tock mumbled, his eyes scanning lines of code. “Routing her earpiece feed through a low-latency sub-channel. We’ll be able to whisper sweet nothings right into her consciousness. Just for… social optimization, of course.” He chuckled, a little too loudly. Static snapped across Tock’s console. Sparks spit from a loose conduit. “Oops. Slight… voltage spike,” he muttered. “My mistake, boss. The main line crossed. Your neural feed connects straight to her ear now. One-way. Mostly.” Zerya’s lips curved into a slow, deliberate smile. Her eyes, usually so calculating, held a spark of pure, unadulterated mischief. “Capitalize on the accident, then. Open the feed, Tock. Let's arrange a public lesson.” Kavien, at the mixer, was regaling a group of investors with a fabricated tale of how his ‘Phantom Lawyer’ had outmaneuvered federal investigators. The woman on his arm was meant to be the picture of sophisticated adoration, yet she twitched sharply. Zerya, watching, allowed a slight, imperceptible shift in her own facial muscles, a micro-expression of disgust at Kavien’s lies. Receiving Zerya’s unfiltered aversion through the audio link, she snapped her chin upright. When Kavien paused for dramatic effect, she leaned in, not with admiration, but with a sharp, whispered correction. “Darling, weren’t the Feds actually negotiating a seizure until your, ah, ‘lawyer’ leaked the immunity clause to the tabloids to force their hand?” Kavien’s practiced smile faltered. A ripple of awkward silence spread through the group. Zerya’s smile widened, projecting pure disdain across the conduit. The socialite raised her voice, carrying over the chamber orchestra. “And wasn’t it a *federal* sniper you had to negotiate *out* of prosecuting for attempted homicide on your brother-in-law, not some shadowy rival?” Kavien’s face, usually so composed, flushed a deep, unhealthy crimson. He squeezed Lysette’s arm, his grip too tight. “Darling, perhaps you’ve had a touch too much… wine.” [AEGIS REWARD: Social Sabotage. She wrenched her arm away, lip curling. “Oh, I think I’ve had *just* enough. Enough of your tiresome lies and your second-hand bravado, Kavien. You’re a fraud.” She turned on her heel, leaving a stunned Kavien in her wake as she stormed out of the mixer, the collective gaze of the city’s elite now firmly fixed on his crumbling facade. “Well,” Zerya purred, tapping a finger against her chin. “That went rather swimmingly. Inform Vander that the path to a boardroom shutdown is now significantly less congested.” Just then, Vander Sterling’s voice, a low rumble, filled the comms. “Zerya. Got the VIP floor schematics. Took some… creative negotiation with the Plaza’s head of security. But there’s a problem. Kavien didn’t just hire security; he brought in the ‘Ghost-Net Collective.’ Elite cyber-mercs. And their lead enforcer… Tock, you might want to hear this. It’s a specialist named Vance ‘The Scythe’ Krohn.” Tock froze. His usual effervescent energy evaporated, leaving him pale and rigid. His fingers, which had just been dancing, clenched into fists. “Vance… Krohn? No. Not him.” His voice was barely a whisper, laced with a fear Zerya had never heard from him. “The very one,” Vander confirmed, a note of grim concern in his tone. “Your old mentor, I believe. The one who taught you everything, then broke your spirit. He guards the Plaza’s mainframe personally and rebuilt their lift protocols from scratch.” Zerya looked at Tock, his usually bright eyes clouded with a deep, unsettling memory. “Tock,” she said evenly, “I need those lift bypasses to tap the servers on the top tier. Can you do it?” Tock swallowed hard. He looked at the flashing lines of code on his console, then at the image of the Sky-Mirror Plaza. He set his teeth. “He called me a parasite for years. Said I was too chaotic to ever build anything. I’ll show him. I’ll rip his network apart. Consider those codes… acquired.” He slammed his palms onto the chromic keys, his fingers moving with a newfound, furious precision. The comms crackled with the sound of his frantic typing. Zerya watched, a rare flicker of respect for his courage in her gaze. She knew Krohn's history of humiliating subordinates. But Tock was hers now, and she would not allow his past to impede their future. Hours later, Zerya stood before the brass-trimmed lift bank in the Plaza, disguised as a senior director from Krysta-Corp. The gala was in full swing above. Her implant hummed, sensing the faint pulse of Tock’s connection. She extended a data-shard toward the access panel. “Got it, boss! Lift codes cracked,” Tock’s voice buzzed in her ear, strained but triumphant. “Krohn put up a vicious fight, but the path is open. Proceed up. Keep your eyes sharp.” As Zerya slotted the shard, the screen above the lift doors flashed crimson: `ACCESS DENIED – MALWARE DETECTED.` Her pulse steadied into predatory focus. “Tock, what surprise?” “Boss! He locked me out! He let me in just long enough to activate a trap script! He’s overriding the physical controls from within and sealing the shaft! Get clear!” Tock shouted. Zerya gripped the data-shard. The lift doors remained bolted shut. A low, guttural growl echoed from behind her. She turned, her custom-tailored executive suit rustling softly. Three augmented enforcers with crimson oculars advanced across the marble, heavy boots ringing. Kavien's perimeter hounds. The trap had sprung, locking her out while the perimeter closed fast.
