Chapter 4 of 10
Billionaire Big Brother

The comms went dead with Kavien’s threat. Zerya, still wearing the scrambler mask, leaned back into the plush seat of the 'Crimson Shuttle,' a discreet aerial transport ascending through Starkridge’s night. The city lights below smeared into a blur, the Apex Spire a distant, impossible needle piercing the smog. She felt nothing beyond a clinical assessment of Kavien’s predictable panic. His declaration of a global bounty was a child’s tantrum, loud but ultimately futile against a fortress he couldn’t comprehend.

A familiar phantom ache pulsed behind her eyes. Not a migraine, not anymore, but a memory. A ghost of the old Zerya, the one who had once cowered under Kavien’s dismissive gaze.
*The stark-white walls of the Royston Corp data-farm hummed with suppressed power. Zerya, twenty-two, her hair pulled back so tightly her scalp ached, clutched a data-slate. On it, the foundational code for ‘Project Chimera,’ her life’s work. She had perfected the data-scrambling algorithm, the very heart of the system that would make Royston a titan. Kavien, then her fiancé, had leaned over her shoulder, a predatory smile already etched onto his features. “Brilliant, Zerya. Absolutely brilliant.” He hadn’t looked at the complex lines of code, only at the projected market value. “Now, about the patent. My legal team suggests… a small modification. For the public facing documents.”
Her implant, a prototype Aegis, had pulsed with a dull throb. She had read the behavioral contracts – 'Credit for innovation must be claimed by the primary contributor. Failure to do so incurs biological penalty.' Ice coated her ribs. She’d interpreted it as a literal death sentence if she ever took credit for her own work while still bound to Royston. A fatal system override. “What kind of modification?” she’d asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Kavien had gestured dismissively. “Just a co-signature. My name, as primary architect. Yours… as a contributing developer. More efficient for market penetration. Less… confusing for investors.” He’d taken the slate from her unresisting fingers. “Don’t worry, darling. We’re a team. You’ll be handsomely rewarded.” Her reward had been a dull migraine that had lasted for weeks. She’d thought it was stress. She’d thought it was her body punishing her for her ambition. She’d thought it was the Aegis killing her slowly.*
The shuttle docked with a gentle lurch. Zerya stepped out, the chill of the Spire’s upper levels a familiar embrace. Tock Bixby, a whirlwind of nervous energy, practically tackled her at the airlock.
“Boss! You’re back! Thank the void!” His usually vibrant green hair looked like he’d been dragged through a static field. “It’s happening! The bureau raid! They moved it up! An hour, maybe less!”
Zerya peeled off the scrambler mask, tossing it onto a waiting console. “They’re early. Predictable. Kavien’s panic is contagious.” She ran a hand over her smooth, dark hair. “Status of the Crimson Echoes infirmary?”
Tock’s fingers flew across his holographic interface, images of the besieged building flashing into existence. Regulator skimmers swarmed the airspace, armored units converging on the ground. “Total lockdown. Perimeter secure, all exits sealed. No personnel movement. Vander’s team initiated the 'Ghost Directive' – the entire block is on silent mode. They won’t get a byte out, boss, but they also won’t get *in* without a full demolition team.”
“Good.” Zerya walked past him, heading deeper into her operational hub. “Let them waste their resources. Data extraction is complete. The building serves its purpose as a distraction.”
A klaxon blared, a deep, resonant thrum that vibrated through the Spire’s reinforced floors. Tock nearly jumped out of his skin. “What in the—? That’s not a Royston frequency! That’s an external breach alert! Apex Spire shields are holding, but… wait. It’s not the Spire. It’s the *infirmary block*!”
The holographic display flickered, zooming in on Crimson Echoes. The government units, poised for breach, suddenly scattered like startled insects. A colossal, armored vehicle, emblazoned with the stylized ‘V’ of Voss Industries, slammed into the main entrance of the facility. The reinforced blast doors, designed to withstand orbital bombardment, buckled inwards with a screech of tortured metal, then collapsed entirely.
Out of the dust and debris, a figure emerged. Tall, impeccably tailored, with a predatory grace that mirrored Zerya’s own. Kerrick Voss, her eldest brother, stepped over the twisted steel. Behind him, a phalanx of Voss Enforcers, their black-and-silver armor gleaming, fanned out, their heavy kinetic pulse rifles held at the ready.
“What… what is he doing?” Tock stammered, his jaw slack. “Is he… helping Kavien?”
Zerya’s lips curved into a rare, genuine smile. “No, Tock. He’s spoiling his little sister.” She watched as Kerrick surveyed the scene, a look of proprietorial disdain on his face. He pulled out a comms unit, his voice booming even through the Spire’s speakers. “Cease fire, you incompetent bureau grunts! This entire city block, effective immediately, is the property of Voss Industries. You are trespassing. Any continued aggression will be met with extreme prejudice and a lawsuit that will make your pension disappear before your next paycheck.”
Enforcement agents paused, stunned. Their encrypted comms channels exploded with furious chatter, but the Voss Enforcers simply advanced, calmly pushing them back. Kerrick, meanwhile, walked into the ruined facility, his gaze sweeping the interior, then settling on the main data vault where Zerya and Vander had been just moments before. “Zerya? You in here, little bird?”
[Aegis Neural Contract: Public display of familial affection detected. Humanity protocols engaged. Vitality Surge: +0.005% bio-regenerative capacity. Note: Avoid sustained exposure. Excessive sentimentality is physiologically suboptimal.]
Zerya felt a faint warmth, a strange, unwelcome flutter in her chest. She almost scoffed at the Aegis’s assessment. Sentimentality was inefficient. Yet, seeing Kerrick, casually demolishing government authority for her benefit, did elicit something. Annoyance at the hassle, perhaps.
Then, a pinpoint of crimson light appeared on Kerrick’s chest, directly over his heart. A sniper’s laser. Her lungs locked. She saw the glint of the lens from a distant rooftop, a rogue marksman, disregarding Kerrick’s threats.
“Kerrick, down!” she yelled into her secure comms. But he was already turning, looking towards the direction of the voice, a confused frown creasing his brow. The sniper’s finger was tightening. He wouldn’t make it.
Zerya moved. A blur of motion, powered by years of training and the Aegis’s constant, subtle boosts. From her command chair, she fired a hard-light relay straight through the remote defense node above Kerrick. The custom kinetic shield, her personal 'Veridian Wall' subroutine, deployed an instant before the high-velocity slug struck, throwing a shower of sparks across the broken door frame. The recoil rattled the mountings, but the barrier held, redirecting the slug into the pavement. Tock screamed as the feed wavered, but Kerrick merely blinked up at the shimmering green light, recognizing his sister's signature code.
