Chapter 5 of 10
The Kill-Switch Revelation

The Pulse-Key’s urgent crimson flicker painted Taline’s vision red, a counterpoint to the chilling calm Darius’s disruptor had brought. Twenty-four hours. She tucked the key and the biometric token into a hidden seam of her gown, the silk slick against her knuckles. Darius was gone, the judge’s chambers now silent save for the distant murmur of the courthouse being secured by the city’s enforcement brigades. The siege was over, but her war had just intensified.
Two hours later, the Grand Atrium of the Apex Summit’s pre-gala networking event pulsed with the low hum of a thousand privileged voices. Crystal chandeliers, shaped like blooming nocturnes, cast a soft, violet glow over the polished obsidian floors. Figures in bespoke suits and shimmering gowns drifted between holographic projections of market trends and inter-syndicate treaties, their temple hardware gleaming subtly under the ambient light. This was New Pylos’s true parliament, where wealth and power carved out their territories with polite smiles and razor-sharp intellect.
“The ‘networking lounge’ is through there, Madam Vartanian,” Neva whispered, her voice a precise, modulated tone that could cut through any crowd. She gestured with an imperceptible flick of her wrist towards a quieter alcove, where several access kiosks glowed with pale blue light. “I’ve arranged for an operational hiccup at Console Seven. Its access barriers are porous.” Neva’s lips curved into a subtle, knowing smile, the double-agent act perfected to a chilling degree. Taline caught the amusement in her secretary’s eyes. An operational hiccup meant Neva had already siphoned off half the unit's clock speed to send Garek’s escort through the sub-basement steam tunnels. Classic Neva.
Taline, draped in a gown of midnight blue silk that seemed to absorb the light around her, moved with a predatory grace. Her smile was a mask, her eyes – usually quick to spark with fire – were cold, calculating. The Neural-Limiter still pulsed, a dull throb behind her left temple, but the temporary relief Darius provided gave her a window. A window to access the mainframe, to merge the Pulse-Key with the cipher, and to finally get some answers.
Console Seven stood ready, a sleek obsidian slab humming softly. Taline settled into the plush ergonomic chair, her fingers, usually adorned with lethal rings, now bare and nimble. She inserted the Pulse-Key into the designated port. The device vibrated, recognizing the connection. Then, she slid the biometric key into the auxiliary port. A faint pulse hummed through the frame as the glass flashed with encrypted traffic.
“Neva, initiate Moirai Protocol. Full system bypass. Route through the Aetherium proxies. I want this untraceable.” Taline’s voice was low, taut with a controlled urgency. “And wipe the transit registries clean of any packets from this port. He can’t know I logged on.”
Neva, standing a respectful distance away, tapped a barely visible earpiece. “Acknowledged. Initiating ghost protocols. Data streams are clean. Estimated bypass completion: ninety seconds.”
Taline’s fingers danced across the holographic keyboard, a blur of motion as she navigated firewalls and multi-layered encryptions. She felt the mainframe’s vast network open before her, a dizzying cosmos of medical records, research data, and proprietary augmentation schematics. Her implant thrummed, synchronizing with the incoming data, pulling in the fragments of information she desperately needed to diagnose her condition. Her focus narrowed, all the peripheral noise of the gala fading into oblivion.
The screen flashed green, a cascade of diagnostic readouts scrolling down. Taline’s eyes scanned them, seeking the specific anomaly, the cause of the degradation. It wasn’t a malfunction. It wasn’t a flaw in the original design.
[NEURAL-LIMITER STATUS: OPERATIONAL. REMOTE ACTIVATION DETECTED.]
[ADMINISTRATOR: KASK, GAREK. ACTIVATION DATE: THREE YEARS AGO.]
[PURPOSE: NEURAL PROCESSING SPHONING. QUANTUM COMPUTATION FOR OVATION CONGLOMERATE ALGORITHMS.]
[PROJECTED LIQUEFACTION: 40 DAYS.]
Taline held motionless. The low drone of the workstation and the murmur of the foyer sharpened into focus. It wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t a glitch. It was Garek. He had done this. Three years ago, he’d activated a kill-switch, slowly draining her intellect, her very essence, to power his algorithms, transforming her into a walking, talking CPU for his empire. His ‘unrefined’ wife, the woman he deemed beneath him, had been his personal, unwitting supercomputer.
Her jaw tightened, acid burning the back of her throat. This was no longer triage; it was an eviction notice for an empire. He hadn’t just tried to kill her; he’d tried to steal her mind, her core, while she stood right beside him. He wasn't just a pest; he was a parasite.
To revoke his admin rights, she needed to bankrupt him. To utterly, irrevocably dismantle Ovation Conglomerate, to strip him of every asset, every shred of power that allowed him to wield such a devastating kill-switch. The game had changed. The rules were now her own, forged in the white-hot inferno of betrayal.
“Neva,” Taline’s voice was a low growl, utterly devoid of warmth. “Pull up every single asset Garek Kask possesses. Every shell corporation, every offshore account, every hidden investment. I want a comprehensive dossier, a complete map of his financial empire. This time, we’re not just taking his properties. We’re taking his breath.”
Neva stiffened, raising her chin as she met Taline’s gaze. The sheer, unadulterated fury radiating from Taline was a tangible force. “Consider it done, Madam Vartanian. I’ll cross-reference with all known syndicate ledgers and the Grey Market’s shadow banks. It will be exhaustive.”
Taline nodded, pulling the Pulse-Key and token from the console. The splicing was complete. The information was hers. Now, she would use it to unravel him.
She rose, her silk gown rustling like a predator’s scales. The elegant, refined facade was back in place, but beneath it, a storm raged. She needed a drink. A strong one.
The main bar was a gleaming arc of chrome and synth-glass, tended by silent, efficient androids. Taline ordered a Veridian Sour, the tart citrus a welcome bite against her simmering rage. She took a slow sip, letting the burning liquid calm her outer composure, even as her inner self plotted Garek’s ruin.
“Taline, darling! Looking radiant as ever.” Garek’s oily drawl cut through the din. He appeared beside her, a smug, triumphant smile plastered on his face. Two broad-shouldered bodyguards flanked him, escorting a small, gaunt man in stiff, oversized robes. The man clutched a worn leather-bound volume to his chest, his eyes wide and bewildered by the opulence around him.
“Garek,” Taline responded, her voice a cool, flat monotone. She didn’t bother to turn fully towards him, instead focusing on the swirling green of her drink.
“I see you’ve found your way back into polite society,” he sneered, a glint of malice in his eyes. “Still, one must admit, you clean up well. But enough pleasantries. I have someone I’d like you to meet. Someone I’ve been searching for, for a very long time. The genius behind the music everyone will be talking about at my gala.” He paused, savoring the moment, then turned to the small man. “Everyone, may I present… Requiem.”
Garek clapped the hermit on the shoulder, a gesture that made the man flinch. The hermit’s gaze, previously lost in the shimmering crowd, darted around, disoriented. Then, his eyes landed on Taline. His mouth, a thin line of apprehension, slowly dropped open. His hand, shaking slightly, lifted, pointing a trembling finger directly at her.
“That’s her! That’s the woman who wrote the music you stole!”
