The scent of expensive mahogany, cheap cologne, and impending dental work filled Taline’s nostrils. Her heel ground a sliver of shattered crystal into the pristine marble, a symphony of destruction echoing the throbbing in the goon’s temple as she slammed his head for the third time against the ornate table. The solid wood splintered, groaned, then gave way with a satisfying crack, sending a cascade of gilded trinkets and half-eaten canapés across the opulent penthouse floor.
“Did you *really* think,” Taline purred, her voice a low growl that barely carried over the man’s whimpers, “that ‘Garek’s protection’ extended to my private archive of unreleased symphonies? Because it absolutely does not.”
The man, a hulking brute named Korth or something equally forgettable, spasmed beneath her. He’d been stupid enough to attempt a data raid on her personal terminal, believing her ‘trophy wife’ facade meant she couldn’t dismember him with a decorative letter opener. His mistake. Taline, dressed in a backless gown of midnight obsidian that shimmered like spilled oil, adjusted her grip on his collar. The silk didn’t wrinkle.
A terrified squeak pierced the post-brawl silence. A young messenger, pale as bleached bone, stood frozen in the ruined doorway, clutching a slim, crimson folder like a life raft. His eyes darted from Taline, a graceful, lethal shadow amidst the wreckage, to Korth’s rapidly swelling face, then to the jagged maw of the ruined table.
“M-M-Madam Vartanian?” the boy stammered, his voice a reedy whisper. “I have… documents… for you. From Ovation Conglomerate. Urgent.”
Taline paused, her foot resting lightly on Korth’s ribs. A delicate eyebrow arched, her gaze like chipped obsidian. “Ovation, you say? How timely.” She released Korth, who flopped onto the floor, gasping for air. The thud was audible. “Approach, little bird. I don’t bite… unless provoked.”
The runner shuffled forward, sweat beading on his upper lip. He extended the folder as if offering a bomb. Taline plucked it from his trembling fingers. The Ovation crest, Garek’s self-important sigil, gleamed in gold.
She tore the seal. Inside, two sheets of vellum. The first, a notice of divorce proceedings. The second, a lengthy enumeration of her ‘unrefined temper,’ ‘disregard for corporate decorum,’ and ‘tendency towards… unconventional conflict resolution.’ Each bullet point highlighted Garek’s utter lack of self-awareness. He was divorcing her for being exactly who she was, all the traits she’d painstakingly suppressed for his benefit.
A slow smile, devoid of mirth, stretched across Taline’s lips. It was a predator’s smile. “Unrefined temper,” she mused, her voice dangerously soft. “That’s what he’s calling it, is it?”
Her gaze swept over Korth, still moaning faintly on the floor. His head bled profusely onto the Italian silk rug. An idea sparked. “Do you have a pen, little bird?”
The boy fumbled, producing a sleek, silver stylus. Taline took it. She crouched beside Korth, dipping the tip of the stylus into the crimson pool forming beneath his skull. A grotesque, visceral inkwell.
Then, with elegant, unhurried strokes, she signed her name across the divorce papers. *Taline Vartanian*. The blood-red script gleamed, a defiant flourish against the pristine vellum. She pressed the signed document back into the runner’s stunned hand. “Tell Garek this is the most refined signature he’ll ever receive. And inform him that my ‘unrefined temper’ is now officially unshackled.”
He nodded, his face slack with horror, then stumbled backward, nearly tripping over Korth’s prone form. He fled, leaving a trail of wide-eyed terror in his wake.
Taline straightened, a dark chuckle escaping her lips. Freedom. It tasted like copper and busted glass. No more stifling the fury for Garek’s snobby, fragile friends. No more pretending to be a demure ornament. Pure exhilaration flooded her ribs.
Then, the world warped. Colors bled into distorted streaks. The crystal chandelier above her head elongated, twisted, then snapped back into focus. A sharp, searing pain lanced through her skull, centered behind her left eye.
[NEURAL-LIMITER INTEGRITY: CRITICAL]
The metallic voice, cold and precise, echoed not in her ears but directly inside her mind. It was a voice she hadn’t heard in years, one she’d hoped was permanently silenced. Her vision flickered again, a violent strobe of light and shadow.
[CORE MATRIX DEGRADATION: 40 DAYS REMAINING UNTIL LIQUEFACTION]
Taline pressed knuckles against her temple, teeth grinding. Forty days. Forty days until the implant that had suppressed her full capabilities, the neuro-limiter Garek had insisted upon for ‘safety,’ became her death sentence. It wasn't just suppressing her; it was dissolving her very brain.
“Damn you, Garek,” she whispered, the earlier thrill of freedom replaced by a cold, calculating resolve. She needed the original medical mainframe, buried deep within the most secure data vaults of New Pylos. She needed the Moirai Protocol, her old assassin network, activated. And she needed it now.
The Apex Summit. The neutral-ground global conference was the only place where rival factions, corporate elites, and underworld bosses gathered under one roof without immediate bloodshed. It was the nexus of power, the very heart of the city’s data infrastructure. It was her only chance. Garek would be there, desperate to find the legendary composer 'Requiem', completely oblivious that she was that very ghost. She would break him, piece by agonizing piece, for this.
A piercing *crack* ripped through the quiet of her penthouse. The ornate glass of her panoramic window spiderwebbed, then exploded inward, showering her with glittering shards. A single, perfectly cylindrical hole marred the titanium alloy of the frame, smoking faintly.
Impulse, faster than thought, had Taline already rolling, dropping behind the solid marble bar. A second shot would have found her heart. Not that it would have ended her, but it would have been inconvenient.
She peered over the edge. Across the scarred floor, glinting amidst the crystal dust and broken glass, lay a single, blood-spattered invitation card. Its embossed letterhead depicted the soaring spires of the Apex Summit. Wedged beneath it, a tiny, folded note, stained with a familiar, metallic crimson.
Taline picked up the note. Her eyes narrowed. The script was elegant, almost lyrical. *Missed you, darling.*
