Chapter 2 of 10
Searing the System
1.1k words
A high-pitched *whine* sliced through the sudden calm. Not the distant hum of the Spire, but something closer, something metallic and angry. The cafeteria’s blast-shielded doors, still dented from the Null-Swarm breach, shrieked as they slid open an inch, then two, then slammed back against the wall with enough force to make the remaining pots on their hooks ring like a cheap chime. Bram didn't flinch. He was still staring at the crisp titan, who knelt with a thud that vibrated through the floor tiles, head bowed, the massive greatsword resting point-down before him. He was awaiting a command. Bram had no idea what to say. “Uh… good work, mate?” he mumbled, feeling utterly ridiculous. The golden knight remained motionless.
Joost finally found his voice, a strangled gasp. “Bram! Your wrist! My… my wrist!” His eyes widened at the faint, shimmering wrench glyph pulsing on his chrono-band. It looked like a tiny, pixelated wrench, spinning slowly.
Before Bram could turn, a squad of heavily armored figures poured into the mess hall. Their power-suits, a stark, matte black with crimson trim, bore the insignia of the Aegis-Spire purge corps. Behind them, striding with familiar arrogance, was Kaelus Varr. His tailored Vanguard uniform, pressed to a knife-edge, absorbed the dim overhead strips. The air crackled with the hum of his personal shield generator.
“Well, well,” Varr’s voice, amplified by his helmet’s external speaker, was a sneer dipped in synth-oil. “Look what we have here. The celebrated Line Cook Corten. And his pet gnat, Velsen. Still slumming it in the grease pit, I see.” He gestured dismissively at the lingering dust motes of annihilated Null-Swarms. “Pathetic. An entire breach, and all the ‘Awoken’ we get is a… Chef. Truly, the Core has a sense of humor.”
Heat flared in Bram's chest, bile rising in his throat. “I take it back,” Bram muttered, loud enough to carry. “He’s not even a bad smell. He’s the *absence* of a bad smell, because even bad smells have character.”
Varr stopped, his head tilting. “Watch your tongue, cook. You’re lucky the Arbiter-Core saw fit to deploy *actual* combatants. Otherwise, you’d be Null-fodder, like your sad little profession.” He surveyed the Paladin, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. “A peculiar sight. Looks like a discarded prop from a pre-Continuum historical holovid. Not quite what the reports flagged. Where’s the virus? The digital contamination?”
His eyes, cold and sharp, landed on Joost. “Ah. There it is.”
Two purge mechs, sleek bipedal units armed with plasma cannons, lumbered forward. Their metallic claws, usually reserved for dismantling rogue droids, shot out, seizing Joost by the arms. Joost yelped, struggling against the unyielding grip.
“Hey!” Bram yelled, taking a step forward. The warrior stirred, a low rumble emanating from his breastplate.
“Stand down, contagion-harborer,” a mech unit droned, its voice flat and synthesized. “You are in violation of Arbiter-Core protocols. Contraband signature logged. Immediate quarantine and deletion procedures authorized.”
“Deletion?” Bram’s voice was low, dangerous. His best friend. His fiercely loyal, perpetually terrified, snack-hoarding best friend. Threatened with *deletion*. The insult to his food was one thing; touching Joost crossed the line. His hands grabbed for the nearest clutter: a stack of cheap canvas prints bought off a gutter merchant to line pantry shelves. One depicted a crude rendering of a stone redoubt, all jagged masonry and towering battlements.
“He’s not a glitch, you recycled toaster!” Bram roared, tearing the canvas free. “He’s my friend!” He didn’t think. He didn’t plan. He just reacted. His eyes locked onto the largest, hottest wok on his line, shimmering with freshly rendered oil from the morning’s batch of ‘Mega-Meat-Substitute Stir-Fry.’ It was bubbling, spitting tiny beads of scalding fat.
He flung the framed canvas, a clumsy, rage-fueled arc, straight into the wok.
The moment the canvas hit the sizzling oil, the wok *screamed*. A sound that was less a sizzle and more a tearing of reality itself. The oil erupted in a geyser of furious heat, obscuring the canvas entirely. The warrior snapped upright, glowing gaze fixed on the iron pan.

The oil solidified, coalescing into something vast and absurdly dense: rough-hewn granite, steaming and dripping scalding grease. It erupted outward with explosive force. The two mechanical brutes pinning Joost slammed backward. Their armored chassis screeched under the sudden mass, crushed against the wall as the Fryer-Stone redoubt expanded between them, thick battlements driving them into the dented plasteel. Joost, released by the mangled arms of the mechs, tumbled to the floor, gasping.
The stronghold towered over them, easily twenty feet tall, masonry sizzling with residual heat, oily mist rising from its miniature turrets. It was impenetrable, unmoving, and utterly ridiculous. One of its jutting bastions slammed into Kaelus Varr’s personal shield. The shield flickered, strained, then *snapped*, showering sparks. Varr let out a surprised grunt as the bastion caught his shoulder guard, lifting him bodily into the air. He hung there, upside down, his legs kicking uselessly, his helmeted head inches from the oil-slicked floor.
“This is… irregular!” Varr sputtered, his voice muffled by his helmet, his dignity in tatters. “System violation! Unsanctioned architectural deployment! This entire sector is compromised!”

Joost, scrambling away from the oil-steaming redoubt, fumbled at his wrist. The beta-key icon pulsed frantically. His fingers flew, tapping at the transparent interface, a desperate flurry of commands. He had no idea what he was doing, only that Bram was in trouble, and this strange, glitchy System was doing… *this*.
“Mask! Mask the signature!” Joost whispered, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Cloak the anomaly! Just… hide it!”
[Warning: System Administrator Beta-Key Detected. Administrator Override: Active. Digital Signature Masking: Activated. Anomaly Virus Signature: Temporarily obscured from local network.]
A deafening, ear-splitting siren shrieked through the entire Aegis-Spire, a sound that vibrated not just in the air, but in their bones. It was the highest-level alert, reserved only for Cataclysmic Breaches. The mess hall emergency lights flared crimson. A deep, guttural ROAR echoed through the Spire’s infrastructure, a sound that made the very foundations tremble. Outside, through the reinforced ferro-glass windows, a monstrous shadow moved. Something colossal. Something with far too many jagged limbs and glowing, malevolent eyes. A Null-Swarm Behemoth, a city-killer, had breached the Spire’s outer wall.

[EMERGENCY PATCH 1.3.7c: Due to unprecedented environmental threat, all Vanguard combat systems are hereby disabled to reallocate processing power for defensive barrier generation. Good luck.]
