Chapter 5: Krayt Dragon's Maw

Dust clung to the matte black finish of the Imperial blasters Slade had laid out on the flat rock. He worked with methodical precision, cleaning each component with a scrap of cloth salvaged from a dead stormtrooper’s undersuit. Every weapon was a tool, and a tool poorly maintained was a liability he could not afford. His fingers traced the smooth, spherical chassis of the thermal detonators. These were military-grade ordnance, designed to produce an intense, localized fusion reaction. He weighed one in his palm, feeling the cold metal and the subtle magnetic click of the safety switch. It was a crude but effective design, far more volatile than the standard explosives he used back on Earth. Power cells from the Imperial speeder were piled nearby, wired into a makeshift charging rig he had jury-rigged using copper wiring and a dampening field generator. He watched the small blue light on the charger pulse slowly, indicating a full load. This was his lifeline in a hostile wasteland where resupply was a fantasy. A fine layer of sweat coated his brow underneath his helmet. The twin suns of Tatooine were relentless, beating down on the barren landscape with an oppressive force that would have killed a normal man within hours. Slade’s modified metabolism kept him going, but even he felt the strain of the brutal environment. He checked his water canteen, taking a measured sip. Water was currency here, a precious resource he had to ration carefully. Survival wasn't just about winning battles; it was about managing logistics, endurance, and resources. Vibrations suddenly rattled the fillings in Slade's teeth. Under his heavy boots, the desert floor shifted, sending rivers of hot orange sand pouring down the slopes of the dunes. A low, guttural hiss vibrated through the air, shaking the very atmosphere of Tatooine. Seismic monitors on the scavenged Imperial speeder dashboard flared red before the console dead-ended into static. Slade didn't need a screen to tell him the danger was immense. The ground beneath him felt less like solid earth and more like a living, breathing ocean of dust. He adjusted the strap of his heavy blaster rifle. Across his chest, a bandolier of silver-plated thermal detonators clinked, their heavy weight reassuring against his armor. Every enhanced nerve in his body screamed that a threat was imminent, but his pulse remained steady, locked at a cool forty beats per minute. Deep rumbling echoed from the bowels of the planet. Sand geysers erupted fifty yards away, spraying fine grit that pelted his Promethium armor like shrapnel. This was no ordinary tremor; it was alive, hungry, and colossal. Gravel sprayed outward as a massive sinkhole formed. Slade backward-flipped off the hood of the disabled speeder, landing lightly on a stable ridge of rock. His single eye tracked the center of the swirling vortex, analyzing the speed of the sinking sand. Suddenly, the ground exploded. Out of the dust rose a creature of mythic proportions. A head larger than an Imperial dropship broke the surface, horned and covered in thick, calcified armor plating. Its maw stretched open to reveal rows of serrated teeth, each the size of a grown man, dripping with smoking, green digestive acid. Yellow eyes, slit-pupiled and burning with ancient malice, locked onto Slade. The Greater Krayt Dragon let out a roar that shattered the glass on the nearby speeder wreck, a wave of pure physical force that pushed Slade back a step. Acidic drool hissed as it struck the sand, dissolving the silica into bubbling glass. Slade didn't flinch. Instead, his hyper-fast brain began calculating angles, mass, and velocity. Standard blasters would do nothing but singe those impenetrable scales. To kill a god, he had to strike from within. Charging forward, the beast lunged. Its massive neck extended with terrifying speed, aiming to swallow the mercenary whole in a single, crushing bite. Sand billowed behind it like a wake behind a dreadnought. Slade waited. He stood perfectly still, a lone figure in orange and black against the backdrop of an angry, churning desert. Only when the giant jaws were yards away did he move. Diving to the left, he triggered his boot thrusters—scavenged and modified from the Imperial speeder's repulsor coils. The burst of anti-gravity propelled him high into the air, clearing the dragon's snout by mere inches. Hot wind blasted his face as the creature roared in frustration, its head slamming into the rocky ridge where Slade had stood a millisecond before. The impact shattered the stone into a thousand flying fragments. Mid-air, Slade unclipped his broad, heavy broadsword. He brought the blade down with all his enhanced strength, targeting a seam between two massive headplates. The Promethium-alloy blade struck with a shower of blue sparks, but it slid off the hide, barely scratching the obsidian-like surface. Rebound force vibrated up Slade's arms, nearly dislocating his shoulders. He gritted his teeth, his grip tightening as he realized physical trauma from the outside was completely useless. His tactical mind shifted gears instantly. Massive tail whipped through the air, creating a sonic boom that kicked up a wall of sand. Slade saw the incoming blow in slow motion. His enhanced reflexes kicked in, allowing him to throw his body flat against the dune just as the spiked tail sliced through the space he had occupied a fraction of a second ago. Sand showered over him, burying him momentarily. He burst through the surface like a specter of death, his single eye burning with cold focus. He didn't feel fear; he felt the familiar, clinical rush of combat. Every obstacle was a puzzle to be solved, every monster just a target with a different weak point. He analyzed the beast's movement patterns. It relied on sound and vibration to pinpoint its prey. He stood perfectly still for a heartbeat, watching the giant head swing blindly in his direction, its nostrils flared as it sought his scent. A tactical plan coalesced in his mind. He needed to use its own massive weight and momentum to position it exactly where he wanted. He pulled a heavy metal crate from the speeder wreck, tossing it several yards away. The clang of metal on metal drew the beast's immediate, violent attention. With a deafening roar, the dragon lunged at the sound, its massive jaws snapping the crate in half. This gave Slade the perfect opening. Unclipping two thermal detonators, Slade primed them with a flick of his thumb. He set the timers for a precise five-second delay. He needed the beast to open its mouth again, or better yet, expose its soft underbelly. Scrambling down the beast's snout toward its gaping nostrils, Slade fought the violent wind. The hot, sulfurous breath of the dragon threatened to choke him, even through his helmet's filters. He jammed the first detonator deep into the beast's left nasal cavity. A wet, angry snort followed, and Slade used the recoil to launch himself off the snout, free-falling toward the shifting sands below. Below him, the dragon's pale, softer underbelly exposed itself as the creature reared back in pain. The armor plates here were thinner, designed for flexibility rather than defense. Slade hit the sand, rolling to absorb the momentum. He came up running, sliding directly beneath the rearing leviathan. The heat radiating from its underside was suffocating, threatening to melt the seals on his suit. Quickly, he reached for three more detonators. He slid along the creature's belly, using his combat knife to slash shallow grooves into the softer flesh between the scales, wedging the metallic spheres deep into the wounds. Blue blood, thick and foul-smelling, sprayed over his visor. He wiped it away with a swift motion, his focus absolute as he primed the remaining charges. Sharp pain flared in his side as he rolled to his feet. Two ribs were cracked, a consequence of the crushing G-force when the dragon had thrashed its head. He ignored the sensation, compartmentalizing the pain as his cellular regeneration went to work. Within seconds, the dull ache began to subside, replaced by a warm, tingling sensation as the bones fused back together. He couldn't rely on his healing factor to save him from everything, though. A direct hit from that acidic spit would dissolve him faster than his cells could replicate. "Enjoy the meal," Slade muttered, his voice a low growl inside his helmet. He kicked off the creature's back leg, using the momentum to slide out from under the beast just as it began to crash back down to earth. He ran, driving his legs with every ounce of his enhanced strength, not looking back. Behind him, a series of muffled thuds echoed. The thermal detonators went off in rapid succession, a chain reaction of imploding thermal energy that bypassed the dragon's external armor entirely. Internal pressure swelled within the beast. A sickening squelch preceded a brilliant flash of white-hot plasma that ruptured the dragon's chest cavity from the inside out. Chunks of flesh, boiling blood, and shattered bone rained down upon the dunes. The shockwave caught Slade, throwing him forward into a dune. He rolled, shielding his head as debris pelted his back. Silence descended over the desert, heavy and suffocating. Slowly, Slade pushed himself up from the sand. He shook his head to clear the ringing in his ears, his armor covered in soot and alien fluids. His chest heaved as his enhanced lungs drew in the dry, dusty air, his healing factor already repairing the micro-tears in his muscles. Looking back, he stared at the smoking ruin of the giant beast. The sheer size of the creature was mind-boggling. Back on Earth, he had fought meta-humans, aliens, and gods, but this was a raw, primal force of nature that belonged to a completely different league of hostility. This galaxy was not just politically hostile; it was ecologically lethal. Every corner of this alien world seemed designed to kill, demanding absolute vigilance. He couldn't afford a single mistake. He walked back toward the blast site, his boots sinking slightly into the blood-soaked sand. The smell of burnt flesh and ozone was overpowering. He needed to salvage whatever he could—perhaps the teeth or claws had value, or maybe the imperial gear he had dropped during the fight was still intact. Stooping down, he picked up his scavenged rifle, relieved to find the chassis scratched but functioning. He wiped the scope clear of dust, slinging it over his shoulder. His gaze drifted to the crater left by the explosion. The dragon's ribcage lay shattered like the hull of a broken starship, ribs sticking out of the sand like pale obelisks. Walking deeper into the wreckage, Slade scanned the area for anything unusual. His tactical eye was always searching, always analyzing. Among the scattered debris of the fallen Krayt Dragon, Slade spots a glimmer – a shard of dark, polished metal embedded in a petrified bone, humming faintly with an unknown energy.
