Chapter 2: Crimson Tide Rising
570 words
Engines rumbled. Headlights cut through the pre-dawn gloom, twin beams piercing the last vestiges of night. Eight trucks, heavy with illicit cargo, lumbered along the deserted coastal road. A rival gang's arms convoy, precise as the informant's last gasp. Yuki watched from a vantage point high above, a cold satisfaction settling in his gut. Kuro, a silent, black shadow, sat sentinel on his shoulder, its emerald eyes reflecting the faint moonlight. The rain had paused, leaving the air thick with the scent of wet earth and exhaust fumes. This was his territory. This was his rule.
A sharp whistle cut the damp air. Below, figures stirred. Not Port Mafia operatives. These were the dead. Six of them, freshly fallen enemies from a skirmish days prior, now puppeted by Yuki’s will. He had chosen them for their size, their previous allegiance, their shock value. They rose in unison, a grotesque wave of broken bodies and shattered uniforms, lurching directly into the convoy’s path. Their limbs moved with an unnatural stiffness, a macabre ballet orchestrated by a whisper only Yuki could hear.
Tires shrieked. Metal groaned. The lead truck, unable to swerve in time, slammed into the reanimated figures. Bone splintered against steel, but the bodies, devoid of pain or fear, held their ground for crucial seconds. The truck’s momentum carried it into the guardrail, crumpling like paper. Explosions rocked the night as fuel tanks ruptured, secondary blasts erupting as ammunition cooked off within the cargo hold. A brutal, chaotic shockwave.
Flashes of crimson and orange painted the sky. The other trucks, now scrambling, found their escape routes blocked by more of Yuki’s reanimated puppets, or by Port Mafia enforcers who materialized from the shadows. The air filled with shouts, gunfire, and the desperate cries of men caught in a trap. Yuki’s operatives moved with brutal efficiency, their movements honed by countless skirmishes. This wasn't a fight; it was an execution.
Yuki lowered his binoculars. His jaw tightened. He had pushed his ability further than ever before. Six bodies, not one. The sheer scale, the coordination, it had been a masterwork of control, a testament to his ruthlessness. But the drain felt deeper this time. A dull throb pulsed behind his eyes, a familiar ache amplified. His hand, usually steady as a surgeon's, trembled faintly. He clenched his fist, dismissing the sensation. Overexertion. Nothing more. This was the cost of power.
Kuro, perched on his shoulder, let out a soft, questioning purr, its green eyes fixed on him with an unnerving intensity. The cat seemed to sense the tremor, the subtle shift in his energy. Yuki merely stroked its sleek fur, a silent reassurance he didn't quite feel. The operation was a resounding success. The rival gang's arms supply decimated, their morale shattered. This would solidify his position, further cement his reputation as the 'Dead Man's Hand' within Port Mafia.

Hours later, the acrid scent of smoke still clung to Yuki's clothes. He had overseen the cleanup, the meticulous removal of evidence, the disposal of the living and the dead. Even his reanimated puppets had been dissolved, returned to the earth from which they briefly rose. Entering his private office, Yuki expected solitude. Instead, a figure lounged on his sofa, long limbs casually draped, a book held open but unread. Brown hair fell across a sharp gaze. Dazai Osamu. Of course. Always appearing where least expected, like a particularly troublesome phantom.
