Chapter 1: The New Dawn

1.8k words

Cold wind bit through the threadbare wool of his coat, carrying the scent of damp earth and incoming rain. Kai Magatsu dug his rusted spade into the stubborn soil, his muscles aching with a familiar, welcome exhaustion. Dirt caked his fingernails, burying the pale skin of hands that had once held the power to unmake empires. Every thrust of the metal blade into the dirt was a deliberate effort to ground himself in the present, to forget the ghosts that pursued him through the corridors of his mind. Heavy grey clouds hung low over the valley, threatening to unleash a torrential downpour before the sun could set. He worked without stopping, his rhythmic movements the only sound in the vast, empty expanse of his field. Each turn of the soil felt like a confession, a silent plea for forgiveness addressed to a god he didn't believe in. Sweat dripped from his messy black hair, a few stubborn silver streaks catching the dim light of the overcast sky. He wiped his brow with a bruised forearm, exhaling a long, shaky breath that misted in the autumn chill. Tired grey-blue eyes stared down at the half-buried potatoes, dark circles carved deep into his youthful face. To anyone passing by, he was merely an exhausted orphan trying to survive the harsh northern winter. Nobody would look at his slender frame and see the conqueror who had once commanded armies of the dead. The silver in his hair was a curse, a physical mark of the forbidden magic that had eroded his mortality. He had lived for thousands of years, yet his body remained frozen at the age of sixteen, a cruel joke played by the magic that had saved his life. This was his chosen purgatory, a broken farmhouse on the edge of a forgotten northern province, surrounded by abandoned fields and jagged, silent mountains. Northern Frerisiys was a harsh land, but its isolation was the only shield he had left against a world that still cursed his name. No one came searching for a quiet teenager who lived alone and spoke to no one. Years had bled into one another since he walked away from the throne of ash. He had buried his name, his power, and the terrifying creatures he had brought into existence. Yet, the weight of his past remained, an invisible anchor dragging him down into the dark corners of his own mind. Every scar on his body told a story of a battle fought, a life taken, or a promise broken. He bent down, plucking a bruised turnip from the dirt and tossing it into a wicker basket. His hands trembled slightly, a phantom vibration reminding him of the cold, metallic weight of the Cube. Every night, the nightmares returned, painting his sleep with the screams of Northern Frerisiys and the smell of burning flesh. He could still see his sister's outstretched hand disappearing into the flames, a memory that rusted his soul. --- A wooden latch clicked as he pushed open the creaky door of his small cabin. Inside, the air was stale, smelling of dried herbs, woodsmoke, and loneliness. Lifting a bucket, he poured greyish water into a chipped iron pot, setting it over the hearth to boil. The simplicity of the task was a comfort, a stark contrast to the days when kings knelt before him, offering treasures just to spare their cities. Steam rose slowly, warming his cold face as he stared into the small, flickering orange flames. Sitting on a three-legged stool, he stared at his reflection in the dark water of the bucket. He looked so young, almost innocent, if one ignored the hollow deadness in his eyes. An immortal soul trapped in the fragile shell of a teenager, forced to witness the world move on while he remained frozen in time. Memories were dangerous things in the quiet hours of the evening. They whispered of the days when he was called the Dark King, a savior to some, a monster to most. He had raised armies of undead beasts, bending the laws of life and death to avenge his slaughtered family. But vengeance had tasted like poison, leaving him hollowed out, a walking corpse in a world of the living. Black ash had fallen like snow the day he decided to disappear. He had dismissed his companions, sealed his magic, and walked into the northern wilderness without a backward glance. He wanted to feel the simple pain of physical labor, hoping it would drown out the screaming of a thousand slaughtered souls. For a long time, the silence of the mountains had been enough to keep the madness at bay. Leaning his head against the rough timber wall of his cabin, he closed his eyes. The silence here was supposed to be a sanctuary, but tonight, it felt heavy, pressing against his eardrums. His fingers twitched against his thighs, tracing the invisible outline of the geometric patterns that once flowed from his fingertips. The magic was still there, coiled like a sleeping serpent in the center of his chest, waiting for a single moment of weakness to strike. Underneath the floorboards, beneath three feet of packed dirt, the Cube lay sleeping. It was a manifestation of his unique magic, a geometric curse that could tear open the boundary between dimensions. He had promised himself he would never dig it up, never summon another beast, never let the darkness out again. To do so would mean revealing his location to those who still hunted him, both mortal and immortal. --- A sudden, sharp crack shattered the quiet of the forest outside. Kai opened his eyes, his pupils dilating as his heart hammered against his ribs. That wasn't the sound of a falling branch or a wandering deer. It was the heavy, splintering crush of wood under immense weight, followed by a low, vibrating growl. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up as a familiar, dreadful energy washed over the valley. Outside, the wind had died down, replaced by a suffocating, unnatural stillness. Something was moving through the thick mist rolling off the mountains, its presence distorting the natural mana of the area. Heavy thuds vibrated through the floorboards of his cabin, shaking the loose dust from the ceiling rafters. Kai stood up, his movements fluid and silent despite his aching joints. Dropping his wooden spoon, he moved toward the window, his breath shallow. He blew out the single candle, plunging the small room into deep shadow. Fog rolled past the grimy windowpane, thick and smelling faintly of sulfur and rotting vegetation. In the distance, the dark silhouettes of the pine trees swayed, though there was no wind to move them. A massive silhouette emerged from the tree line, easily twice the height of a grown man. Crimson eyes gleamed through the gray mist, burning with a mindless, feral hunger that Kai recognized all too well. Monsters didn't belong in these peaceful northern valleys; the regional barriers should have kept them out. But the barriers were failing, just like everything else in this decaying world. Running toward the farmhouse was a figure, small and desperate, stumbling through the mud. Her clothes were torn, a simple white tunic stained with mud and dark streaks of fresh blood. Behind her, the beast lunged, a hulking mass of matted fur, razor-sharp claws, and a jaw wide enough to swallow a horse. It was a Calamity Beast, a remnant of the ancient wars that had once brought humanity to the brink of extinction. It screeched, a sound that scraped against the skull, shattering the glass of Kai's cabin window. Kai stood by the door, his hand resting on the wooden latch, his mind racing through a dozen different scenarios. If he stayed inside, the beast would kill the girl, then rip this cabin to pieces. If he stepped out, he risked exposing the power he had spent centuries trying to bury. Fighting meant unleashing the darkness, waking the slumbering horror that lay beneath his floor. A beast of that size would easily crush a normal teenager, leaving nothing but a red smear in the dirt. Screamimg, the girl fell into the mud, her ankle twisting with a sickening pop as she lost her footing. The monster reared back, its massive, clawed arm raised to deliver a crushing blow. With a heavy sigh, Kai pushed the door open, stepping out into the cold, damp night. He couldn't watch another innocent person die in front of him, not when he had the power to stop it. Black mist began to seep from his fingertips, defying the wind as it swirled around his worn boots. A tiny, glowing geometric cube materialized above his palm, spinning slowly, its edges sharp and purple. Floating in the dim light, the cube hummed with an ancient, terrifying power that made the grass wither beneath him. Time seemed to slow down as the monster paused, its crimson eyes shifting from the girl to the boy standing in the doorway. It sensed the change in the air, the sudden, suffocating pressure of a predator far higher on the food chain. The girl looked up, her tear-stained face pale with terror as she saw the dark energy rolling off Kai's body. Darkness surged from the rotating cube, forming thick, shadowy tendrils that wrapped around Kai's arms like liquid obsidian. Before the beast could swing its claws, Kai pointed two fingers forward, his voice a low, emotionless whisper. "Rise." Silence returned to the valley as a massive, skeletal claw erupted from the muddy earth beneath the monster. Blood dripped from the newly summoned creature's jaws as it dragged its decaying, wolf-like body into the physical world. The Dark Beast roared, a sound that shook the very foundations of the valley, and lunged at the Calamity Beast with terrifying speed. Bones snapped and flesh tore as the two monsters clashed in the mud, but the struggle was incredibly brief. Kai's creation was a masterpiece of necromancy, a perfect killing machine that knew neither pain nor fear. Looking up, the girl gasped, scrambling backward in terror as she stared at the two nightmares before her. She stared at Kai, her eyes wide with a mixture of horror and desperate hope as the dark beast tore the intruder apart. The sheer scale of his power was undeniable, a force that belonged to legends and nightmares, not a simple farm boy. Whispering, she clutched her wounded ankle, her voice trembling in the cold air. "Your eyes... you are the... the Dark King." He froze, his grey-blue eyes locked onto her face as the realization hit him like a physical blow. Standing there, the dark mist slowly receding into his skin, he realized his quiet life was officially over. The girl's eyes held not just fear, but a desperate plea for salvation that he had spent centuries running from. A cold voice echoed from the tree line, shattering the temporary silence. "We finally found you, My King."
