Sovereign of the Shadow

The grand ballroom of the Lumina Hotel bled opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen constellations, casting sharp light over the elite of the underworld and high society alike. But despite the diamonds, the champagne towers, and the soft hum of the string quartet, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Everyone was waiting for him.
When the heavy oak doors swung open, a heavy silence rippled through the crowd.
Alejandro.
At twenty-eight, he was the undisputed king of the global syndicate, a certified genius who ran both legitimate tech empires and the darkest corners of the black market. He was devastatingly handsome, sharp-jawed, with eyes as dark and unyielding as obsidian. Dressed in a flawless, custom-tailored black tuxedo, he exuded a lethal, magnetic grace. He was the world's most coveted bachelor, yet he looked at the swarming socialites and bowing rival bosses as if they were nothing more than dust on his leather shoes. He was entirely cold. Utterly untouchable.
Until she arrived.
Twenty minutes later, Sarah stepped into the ballroom.
Unlike the other women draped in heavy jewels and desperate for Alejandro’s attention, Sarah moved with an effortless, calm grace. She wore a simple midnight-blue silk dress that complemented her soft elegance. She was the definition of cool and serene, carrying a pure, innocent light that didn't belong in a room full of killers. Yet, she wasn't intimidated by any of itAlejandro’s gaze, which had been scanning the room with bored detachment, instantly locked onto her. The icy, terrifying aura that usually surrounded him seemed to fracture, just for a fraction of a second.
Sarah navigated the crowd smoothly, turning down two different multi-billionaire suitors with a polite but firm smile. She made a direct line toward the VIP lounge where Alejandro stood like an isolated emperor.
"You look like you're plotting a mass murder, Andro," Sarah murmured, stepping into his personal space—a boundary that would get anyone else killed.
The guards surrounding Alejandro instantly stepped back, knowing better than to interfere.
Alejandro’s sharp features relaxed, a rare, ghost of a smirk playing on his lips. "You're late, Sarah."
"A queen is never late, everyone else is simply early," she shot back, her eyes flashing with a playful, sassy spark. She reached out, completely unfazed, and casually adjusted the lapel of his tuxedo. "Besides, I had to make sure I outshone the most eligible bachelor in the world. How am I doing?"You always outshine everyone," Alejandro said softly, his voice dropping to a low, deep rumble meant only for her ears. To the rest of the world, he was a monster. To Sarah, he was just Andro, the boy who had protected her since they were children. She was the apple of his eye, the only anchor keeping his humanity tethered to the earth.
Before Sarah could reply, a heavy shadow fell over them.
It was Viktor, a volatile, arrogant underboss from a rival eastern territory. He was visibly drunk, puffed up by his own status, and completely blind to the danger he was walking into.
"Ah, Don Alejandro," Viktor sneered, his eyes instantly drifting away from the mafia king and landing on Sarah. He looked her up and down with a greasy, disrespectful smirk. "I see you brought a pretty little piece of arm candy tonight. Tell me, sweetheart, what's a delicate thing like you doing with a machine like him? Why don't you come over to my table? I know how to treat a real woman."
Viktor reached out a hand, intending to rest it on Sarah's bare shoulder.
Sarah didn't flinch. She simply tilted her head, her calm expression unchanging, waiting to see how her best friend would react.
She didn't have to wait long.
Before Viktor’s fingers could even graze the fabric of Sarah's dress, Alejandro moved. He was a blur of lethal speed.
Crack.
A sickening sound echoed through the immediate vicinity as Alejandro caught Viktor’s wrist and twisted it backward. Viktor shrieked, dropping to his knees instantly as his bones splintered under Alejandro's grip.
The string quartet stopped playing. The entire ballroom froze in sheer terror.
Alejandro leaned down, his eyes turning dead, void of any human emotion. The temperature in the room seemed to drop to sub-zero. He leaned in close to the whimpering man, his voice aterrifyingly quiet whisper.
"If your eyes look at her again, I will tear them out. If your hand ever reaches for her again, I will hunt down your entire bloodline," Alejandro promised, his grip tightening until Viktor choked on a sob. "She is Sarah. And you will bow your head when you speak to my Queen."
With a disgusted shove, Alejandro threw the grown man to the floor. He didn't even look back as Viktor's frantic men dragged their bleeding boss away.
Alejandro turned back to Sarah. In an instant, the demonic rage vanished from his face. He pulled out a silk handkerchief, wiped his hand, and offered her his arm, his expression turning completely gentle once more.
"Shall we get some air, Sarah?" he asked softly.
Sarah smiled, slipping her hand into the crook of his elbow. "You really have no patience at parties, do you, Andro?"
