Chapter 7 of 10

Double or Nothing

The Gearheart automaton roared, a sound like a failing power grid, its axe a golden blur as it cleaved a pillar of scorched concrete. Sparks rained down, illuminating the dust-choked arena. Levon shrieked, a sound that could shatter glass, and dove behind a fallen console, his floral-patterned jacket snagging on twisted rebar. “Oh, this is just *darling*,” he wailed, peeking over the top. “A forced game of ‘Whack-a-Hero’ with a glorified walking blender! And the odds? Simply atrocious!” Narine gripped the hilt of her plasma-shiv, its pale blue glow a tiny defiance against the encroaching shadow of the bovine behemoth. Her gaze, typically so sharp, darted between Tigran, the lumbering boss, and the now-sealed exits. Scattered cultists scrambled for cover, dragging fallen comrades behind reinforced pillars. Tigran, however, remained still, his gaze fixed on the Pit Boss. His voice, when it came, was a low hum, barely audible over the grinding gears of the construct. “The dealer offers a ‘Double or Nothing’ scenario. My current army’s connection against your life, Pit Boss. Standard wager conditions, I presume?” [“A MAN OF BUSINESS, I SEE!”] The dealer’s synthetic tone crackled, laced with amusement. [“INDEED, CONTESTANT TIGRAN. YOUR ‘CYBER-NECROMANCER’ MATRIX, ITS ACTIVE CONNECTIONS TO YOUR UNDEAD UNITS, IS THE ANTE. DEFEAT THE PIT BOSS, AND YOUR POWER IS DOUBLED. FAIL, AND YOUR ARMY — POOF! GONE. A FAIR STAKE, WOULDN’T YOU SAY?”] Tigran’s lips, traditionally a thin, impassive line, twitched. Not a smile, but a tightening that suggested a data packet had just been properly sorted. “Accepted.” “Accepted?!” Levon screeched, momentarily forgetting his self-preservation. “Tigran, you can’t just—this is our entire *payroll*! Our *life savings*! Our *pension plan*!” The horned titan, as if on cue, let out another furious bellow and charged. Its axe, a massive slab of alloy, arced towards Tigran with terrifying speed. [“A BOLD MOVE, CONTESTANT TIGRAN! NOW, FOR A LITTLE… HOUSE ENHANCEMENT!”] A ring of shimmering static pulsed from the iron chest, a blinding flash of electromagnetic energy. It carried no physical impact, but Tigran’s cybernetic arm spasmed, his internal processors stuttering. Diagnostic readouts flared crimson across his retina as his connection to his army flickered, then died. “What…?” Tigran muttered, his voice stripped of clinical precision. His undead units, the cyber-hound, the former cultists, even the colossal Leviathan behind him, froze mid-action. Their neon eyes dimmed, their movements locking up like rusty cogs. [“OOPS! LOOKS LIKE OUR ARENA GLADIATOR CAME PREPARED WITH A LITTLE ‘DISRUPTION FIELD’!”] The house voice purred, mock sympathy dripping from every syllable. [“ANTI-NECROMANCY TECH, A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE. HOUSE RULES, PLAYER. NO CRYING FOUL. THE BET IS ON, AND YOUR ARMY IS… OFFLINE.”] The colossal axe, momentarily stalled by the EMP burst, resumed its descent, now aimed squarely at Tigran’s head. With his army disconnected, he was just a man with a fancy arm against a multi-ton engine of destruction. His hand moved, reaching for a non-existent control panel, his unreadable gaze breaking for a split second. “Tigran!” Narine yelled, lunging across the tiles. With a desperate sprint, she launched herself forward, her body a blur of motion. In her hand, the ‘Apex Shard’, a rare, custom-fabricated energy blade she’d salvaged from the wreckage of a military drone, hummed with contained power. It was her best weapon, the only tool in her kit capable of biting through reinforced composite armor. She wedged herself between Tigran and the descending arc. The Apex Shard met the golden blade with a screech of tortured metal and a blinding flash. For a fraction of a second, the two forces locked, Narine’s slight frame bracing against the impossible weight. Hydraulic chambers in the mechanical beast whirred in protest, its weapon stalling. Then, with a sickening *CRACK*, the Apex Shard shattered. Shards of energy-infused alloy exploded outwards, searing Narine’s arm. The force of the blow still slammed into her, sending her flying backwards, a choked cry escaping her lips. She landed hard against a fallen scaffold, her head hitting the cold metal with a dull thud. A gash bloomed on her forehead, and her right arm hung at an unnatural angle, the sleeve of her jacket shredded, revealing mangled flesh and sparking wires. Tigran’s head snapped toward her, tracking the smear of coolant and blood across her shoulder. The analytical detachment that regulated his baseline vitals cracked. A low, guttural growl, entirely unlike his usual modulated voice, rumbled in his chest. His cybernetic arm whirred, servos overvolting into redline RPMs. The mechanical terror roared again, winding up for another strike, but Tigran closed the distance first without issuing a single system query. His cybernetic arm glowed with a furious crimson light, the integrated casing shifting and expanding. He met the monster's charge head-on. His metal-clad fist drove straight into the knee joint. The specialized alloy buckled inwards with a shriek of protesting metal. Tigran unleashed a relentless barrage, each hammer-blow caving in exposed servos and coolant lines. The air filled with the stench of ozone and superheated metal. The beast bellowed, an alarm klaxon bleeding through its vocalizer. It swung its axe wildly, but Tigran was already inside its guard. He tore into the chassis with a mechanical ferocity that forced the watching cultists back. He ripped open a panel on its chest, exposing a tangle of fiber optics and power conduits. With a roar that shook the very foundations of the room, Tigran plunged his bare hand into the exposed circuitry. Raw current arced, engulfing his arm in a blinding blue flash. The machine spasmed violently, its internal lights flickering, its roars turning into strained gurgles. Then, silence. The hulking brute slumped forward, its axe clattering to the ground, its gilded chassis dented, torn, and sparking. Tigran stood over it, his crimson arm still smoking, his chest heaving with something that looked suspiciously like raw, human exertion. He pulled his hand out of the wreckage. The beast's optical sensors remained dark for a beat. Then, with a soft whir, they reignited with a chilling, subservient green. [“UNEXPECTED… ANOMALOUS… PLAYER TIGRAN HAS DEFEATED THE CHAMPION PIT BOSS GEARHEART MINOTAUR!”] The Croupier’s voice lost its sarcastic edge, replaced by a cold, calculating hum of surprise. [“REWARD: ARMY POWER DOUBLED. AND, AS PER STANDARD NECROMANCY PROTOCOLS… CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW PET. HOWEVER…”] A wash of icy static blanketed the chamber, heavier than the earlier pulse. The dealer's broadcast returned, laced with an unprecedented venom. [“SUCH AN UNGRACIOUS, UN-SPORTING VICTORY CANNOT GO UNPUNISHED. THE HOUSE FINDS YOUR BEHAVIOR… UNACCEPTABLE, PLAYER TIGRAN. THERE WILL BE NO ‘DOUBLE OR NOTHING’ PAYOUT ON THE FINAL TIMER. CONSIDER THIS A ‘HOUSE EARLY PAYOUT’. [“THE GRAND CASINO WILL CONCLUDE. THE EARTH WILL BE DELETED. IN EXACTLY… TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.”] The digital clock above their heads, which had been counting down from 100 days, abruptly reset to 00:24:00:00.
