Chapter 5 of 10

Raising the Leviathan

The gargantuan eye, a mottled orb of crimson and bruised indigo, blinked. A slow, deliberate motion that rattled loose pebble-dash across the fractured floor. Tigran, however, only registered the data: *"Biometric Signature: 'Abyssal Colossus – Genus: Hydrosaurian Leviathan. Threat Level: Cataclysmic. Aggression: Imminent."* Levon gripped his scalp, kicking away a severed Jackpot Zombie wrist floating near his boot. The air turned heavy with the stench of ozone and brine. Water, tinged with luminous yellow runoff, surged through the new rift, sloshing around their ankles. Tigran ignored Levon, his gaze fixed on the monstrous eye. It swiveled, its gaze sweeping over the bunker’s interior, then settling on Tigran’s array of salvaged servers and nascent cybernetic constructs. A low rumble vibrated through the structure, not from the monster, but from Tigran’s auxiliary cooling fans. An idea, cold and efficient, had begun to form. “A transport,” Tigran murmured, more to himself than anyone. “A mobile command center. Something capable of navigating the Enclave’s new topography and reaching high altitudes.” The brute offered an unexpected operational vector. “Transport? Tigran, it is going to puree us in its belly gears!” Levon scrambled atop an unbolted server rack. The Phantom Blade, hovering above a dead monitor, tilted its translucent helm. Tigran’s retina display painted gridlines over the exposed spinal plating. “Levon, locate the primary power conduit leading to the ‘Data Spire’ on sub-level three. We need its core resonance accumulator. Phantom Blade, clear a path. Immediate extraction is required for phase one.” “Accumulator? It’s staring straight through my spleen!” Levon squeaked. The iris narrowed, emitting a grinding vibration that dislodged ceiling tiles. Ignoring the panic, Tigran moved with purpose. He needed to incapacitate the beast, not just for his army, but for the very ground beneath them. The building was groaning, the hull displacement stressing load-bearing struts. His system forecast ceiling collapse within 438 seconds. A chain reaction was the optimal solution. He bypassed a ruined access panel, his fingers a blur over the wiring. The sub-level’s emergency lighting flickered to life. Levon wrestled the requested cylinder out of an open rack, face red under the neon strobes. “This brass pipe weighs more than my aunt’s tiered fondant cake!” Levon wheezed, dropping to one knee. “What is it for?” “Creating a localized energy cascade,” Tigran replied, his focus absolute. “The serpent's dorsal junctions run unshielded lines. Bridging the sub-spire bus to this accumulator discharges twenty thousand volts into its nerve bundle. A forced circuit break.” The Phantom Blade, a shimmering blur, phased through the collapsing wall, clearing debris. The horned snout sank inward, split jaws parting to show three tiers of tungsten rotary blades inset along the gumline. A putrid, hot breath washed over them. “Controlled implosion? Tigran, it’s coming for us! This is not 'optimized'! This is 'omega-level catastrophe'!” Levon shrieked, fumbling the brass cylinder. Tigran caught the flange before it struck puddle water. He slammed it into a jury-rigged port he’d constructed moments earlier, connecting it to the building’s compromised power grid. [FLASHY KILL BONUS: +1000 Chips] [HOUSE EDGE INCREASED. PLAYING IT SAFE? DULL. LET'S MAKE THINGS INTERESTING.] The building shuddered violently. An arc flash scorched the rift overhead. The serpent whistled in feedback, shearing alloy studs and flesh as it snapped backward against the beams. The carcass seized, slamming the remaining joists flat. Stillness fell, broken only by sizzling wiring. [CONGRATULATIONS! YOU’VE DEFEATED THE ABYSSAL COLOSSUS – GENUS: HYDROSURAN LEVIATHAN!] [NEW CHALLENGE: LEVIATHAN REVIVED! NOW FEATURING: IMPERVIOUS TITANIUM-CHITIN ARMOR. ENJOY!] And then, a new, even more horrifying sound. A low, guttural growl, deeper than before. Through the hanging vapor, the ocular orb flared amber behind a newly deployed polarized blast-shield, chitinous skin re-knitting under scarlet telemetry lines. Its jaws, larger and more menacing, opened wide. “Impervious… titanium-chitin… armor?” Levon whispered, his face ashen. “It’s stronger now? What kind of twisted game…?” Tigran’s optical displays flashed red. The creature’s bio-signature was indeed higher. Its new armor plating registered as 99.7% damage resistant to all known forms of kinetic and energy attacks. A direct attack was now futile. Adaptation was required. Fast. The serpent plunged forward. Tigran sprinted straight into the drop zone, sliding under the lower jaw as steel teeth chewed through concrete flagstones. “Phantom Blade! Diversion! Focus its attention!” The ghostly assassin shimmered, phasing through the monster’s skull, causing a momentary flicker of confusion in its immense eye. That was all Tigran needed. He jammed a specially designed neural interface cable, salvaged from the Data Spire’s server banks, directly into a pulsating cybernetic node located just behind the Leviathan’s ocular stalk. The beast thrashed against the girders, attempting to shear him off. Tigran drove steel anchor pins through his gloves, locking himself to the bone-plate. He was inside. A torrent of raw data flooded his perception – sensory input, instinctual urges, memory fragments of ancient ocean currents and deep-sea predators. He cleaved through sensory buffer overflow and raw predation loops. He wasn’t trying to control it, not yet. He was patching in, overriding, asserting his own protocols. He isolated the pain registers, sensory dampeners, and root command logic. He began to rewrite them. The beast steadied. Its ocular shield retracted, lenses dimming to standby cobalt. The thick neck drifted down, resting its lower jaw against the rubble pile. Tigran uncoupled his lead, clearing the neural feedback spikes that prickled his wrists. [ABYSSAL COLOSSUS – GENUS: HYDROSURAN LEVIATHAN HAS BEEN REPROGRAMMED!] [NEW CLASS: CYBER-NECROMANCER. NEW ABILITY: ULTIMATE BIOMECH REANIMATION. EXPENDITURE: SIGNIFICANT.] “Did… did you just give it a firmware update?” Levon whispered, jaw slack as the blunt snout settled beside Tigran's knee like a docked gunboat. Tigran pulled telemetry logs from the beast's freshly synced buffer. Amidst flooded topographic scans, a geostationary blip resolved: the Administrative Spire, tethered beyond cloud cover in low orbit. The Administrative Tower. Not on the ground, but in orbit. The chassis was hydro-dynamic, built for brine and trench silt, entirely lacking burn nozzles for an orbital push. Not yet. He needed a propulsion system, specialized alloys, a way to break the exosphere. Narine's crew held the Aerospace Research Wing, along with its surviving thruster stockpiles. He pulled out his comms unit, the signal still spotty from the earlier explosions. “Narine,” he stated, his cadence monotone, ignoring the knot in his gut. “I require your faction’s assistance. Specifically, high-altitude propulsion schematics and atmospheric shielding technology.” He paused while the creature's coolant bypass hummed through the masonry. “This is critical for the… final phase of deployment.” Static. Just dead, crackling static. Tigran frowned, adjusting the frequency. Static hissed. Then, over the torn channel, a sharp metallic thud was followed by Narine’s short, choked shout.
