Pressure Cooker Politics

The rhythmic *tick-tock* of the bronze-hued sphere vibrated through the packed dirt beneath Zendra’s boots, an irritation she would ordinarily dismantle with a pipe wrench. But this was System-issued. This was *hers*. Brakkar kept his gaze locked on the gleaming pod, hand resting against the hilt of his bone-carved broadsword. Around them, the Zol-Tarish warriors, accustomed to the bizarre, still edged away, their spears held a little tighter.
“It’s just an oversized steam pot,” Zendra muttered, testing her grip on her skirts. She had already wrestled a barbed-wire-spewing oven into submission that morning; an erratic, clockwork egg was merely standard kitchen maintenance.
Before she could fetch a bucket of sand, the ground trembled with a deeper, industrial cadence. A guttural growl of strained pistons and exhaust pipes rumbled from beyond the settlement perimeter. The air, already thick with the scent of beast-hide and diesel fumes, suddenly gained a fresh, acrid layer of chemical exhaust.
A monstrosity of rusted steel and belching smoke lumbered into view, tearing through a flimsy section of the outer palisade as if it were kindling. It was a diesel-mech, its articulated limbs piston-driven, its single cyclopean eye glowing a malevolent amber. From its chest cavity, a distorted loudspeaker crackled, amplifying a voice Zendra knew intimately, a voice that made her teeth ache.
“Zendra! My dearest, misguided Zendra!” Vannok’s voice, filtered through an iron horn, crackled across the compound. “Return to me, my love! This… *primitive* encampment has clearly ensnared your delicate mind with their crude shamanism! I have come to liberate you from this… tribal enchantment!”
Vannok himself stood in the mech’s open cockpit, impeccably tailored in a vanadium-grey suit despite the dust and chaos, a sneer plastered across his chiseled face. A dozen heavily armed mercenaries, clad in Vandercrag corporate-issue armor, fanned out behind the mech, their laser rifles humming ominously. Their insignia, a stylized gear-and-skull, was a familiar sight.
Zendra’s grip tightened on the cursed rolling pin Gristle had ‘helpfully’ retrieved from her tent. *Tribal enchantment?* The nerve! He thought she was brainwashed? She was merely *furious*.
Brakkar stepped forward, his expression a thundercloud, his hand now fully on his blade. “Vannok of the Iron-Clad Consortium,” he rumbled, his voice low and dangerous, “you trespass on Zol-Tarish land. State your true intent, or face the consequences.”
Vannok laughed, a brittle, grating sound. “My intent, mud-dweller, is to reclaim what is mine! Zendra Vorloch is a ward of Vandercrag, an asset, and my rightful fiancée! Her recent… *eccentricities* are clearly the result of your savage rituals!” He gestured dismissively at the proud Zol-Tarish warriors, then at Zendra, who was now vibrating with a barely contained rage. “I offer you one chance: release her, and I might spare your squalid village from a thorough cleansing.”
Zendra’s teeth ground together hard enough to crack enamel. *Cleansing? Squalid?* Her gaze darted from Vannok’s oiled smirk down to the countdown device humming in the sand. An idea, beautifully catastrophic, bloomed in her mind. “You want to negotiate, Vannok?” she snarled, a feral grin splitting her face. “Fine. Let’s negotiate.”
Before Brakkar could even question her intent, Zendra stooped, her muscles coiling with surprising power. She hoisted the massive cooker by its safety valve, muscles straining, and with a feral bellow, she *heaved* it. The egg spun end over end across the dunes, a blur of brass and whistling iron.
“ZENDRA, NO!” Brakkar bellowed, but it was too late.
The 'Perfect Pressure Cooker' struck the mech’s right arm with a brutal *CLANG*. A split second later, the safety valve failed in a blinding *BOOM*, blowing hot vapor through the yard. A torrent of superheated steam, shrapnel, and twisted metal erupted, tearing into the mech’s plating. The mechanical arm, severed cleanly at the shoulder, flew through the air, spinning uselessly before embedding itself in a nearby sand dune with a heavy *thud*.
Vannok, splattered with grease and debris, shrieked, scrambling back into the cockpit, his face pale with fury and disbelief. “You… you *barbarian!*”
“Barbarian with good aim!” Zendra yelled back, dusting her hands. Gristle, perched on a ruined barrel, chittered with approval, a small spurt of magma escaping his snout.
“Open fire! Annihilate them all!” Vannok screamed, his voice raw with rage. The mercenaries, recovering from their shock, instantly raised their laser rifles, a barrage of searing red beams lancing towards Zendra.
Without a thought, Brakkar moved. He threw himself in front of Zendra, his broad back absorbing the first volley of energy bolts. The impact drove him half an inch into the grit as his beast-hide harness absorbed the discharge. A rough grunt tore from his throat.
Then, with a dry *CRACK* like snapping slate, dark fissures split across Brakkar’s chest, radiating from the grey mark upon his neck. A faint, glowing ash, like embers from a dying fire, began to leak from the cracks, shimmering in the harsh desert light. His body spasmed, a guttural groan tearing from him as he slumped, his stoic facade crumbling into a mask of raw pain.
Zendra froze. Grey flakes drifted from the seams of his skin, his chest seizing as the fracture deepened. It wasn’t just a curse. It was *her* curse. A flash, a fragmented memory, pierced her mind – not of this life, but of another. A sacrifice. A desperate shield. He had taken it for her. He had taken *this* fatal affliction, this slow crumbling of soul and body, to save *her*.
And now, because she was here, because she was close, it was killing him faster. He was crumbling because she had dragged her battles to his doorstep.
[“A loved one’s plight, a heart so true, a Cure Recipe, just for you!”] The System’s chirping soprano pealed across her hearing, brass bells ringing in her ears. A glowing scroll unfurled before her eyes, its elegant script detailing the path to salvation.
Zendra’s eyes scanned the first ingredient, her breath catching in her throat as she read the impossible words: “Void-Heart of a Neon Leviathan, found only in the Gloom-Spire Slums of Vandercrag.”
