Falling for the Facade

997 words

The wind howled a frantic lullaby, snatching at Savia Corves’s tunic as she dangled, suspended by a single, fraying tether. Below, the city of Pelagosa was a dizzying mosaic of sun-drenched canals and terracotta roofs, shrinking with every creak of the rope. Above, the Grand Chronometer’s colossal hands glowed with arcane energy, their gears grinding a rhythm of impending doom. A sliver of metal bit into her palm, a reminder of the botched extraction from the Guild of Chronos, her mission to retrieve the schematics for the Caelian Compass having unravelled spectacularly. Footsteps echoed on the Chronometer’s inner walkways, accompanied by the clatter of bronze-plated armor. The city guard. They moved with the predictable efficiency of a magi-tech automaton. “Corves! Stand down!” a voice boomed, amplified by an aural-resonator charm. “You’re surrounded!” Savia twisted, her gaze sweeping the impossible distance below. Her eyes caught on a sprawling, ornate balcony on the third tier of the Azure Spire, its polished basalt balustrade gleaming. A figure leaned there, silhouetted against the morning sun, nursing what looked like a cup of spiced amberwine. Rellian Vance. The notorious rake, the city’s most eligible, and most infuriating, bachelor. A flicker of an idea, desperate and utterly insane, ignited in her mind. This was it. This was the opening. Without a moment’s hesitation, Savia released the tether. The air rushed past her, a screaming torrent, as she plummeted. Her stomach lurched, but her training held. She aimed, calculating the wind vectors, the precise arc of her descent. The guards’ shouts faded into the roar of her own blood. The balcony grew larger, Rellian Vance a rapidly expanding silhouette. He looked up just as she hurtled toward him, his languid posture instantly gone, replaced by an alert tension. His cup clattered to the basalt as he braced himself, broad shoulders squaring. Savia hit him like a human missile, a jarring impact that knocked the breath from her lungs. They stumbled, a tangle of limbs and fine silks, before Rellian somehow managed to regain his footing, catching her securely in his arms, one hand splayed against her back, the other gripping her thigh. His embrace was surprisingly solid, almost bruising. Above, the guards appeared at the edge of the Chronometer, magi-lenses already whirring to life, broadcasting their pursuit across the city's broadcast conduits. This was her chance. Her voice, usually sharp and deliberate, softened into a breathy, melodramatic whisper, just loud enough for the nearby magi-lenses to capture. “Oh, Rellian, my darling!” she gushed, clutching at his lapels, her eyes wide and glistening with manufactured adoration. “You truly are my hero! I simply couldn’t wait another moment to begin our adventure!” Rellian’s brows, finely sculpted and perpetually amused, rose fractionally. A faint scent of spiced cardamom and something else, something clean and earthy, emanated from him. He stared down at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his deep-set eyes, before a slow, indulgent smile spread across his face, the kind that had broken a thousand hearts across Pelagosa. “Savia, my wildflower,” he purred, his voice a low, resonant rumble that stirred the fine hairs along her nape. “Always so eager, aren’t we? Such a delightful surprise to find you literally falling for me this morning.” He turned his head slightly, his gaze meeting the lens of a hovering magi-drone that had drifted precariously close. “Forgive her enthusiasm, good people of Pelagosa. My dearest Savia, in her ardor, has chosen to invoke the Solstice Vow. We shall be wed.” Savia’s breath caught. He’d accepted. And with a theatrical flourish, no less. This was perfect. Too perfect. She had expected to have to cajole, perhaps even threaten him with some minor social scandal. Not this easy, almost *eager*, acceptance. Had he truly not recognized her? Her face, before her disgrace, had been plastered across every society paper. Or was he playing a deeper game? “The Solstice Vow?” a collective murmur rippled through the invisible broadcast conduit. The mage-announcer, his voice a dispassionate drone, chimed in. “Citizens, we have an unexpected declaration! Savia Corves, of the formerly esteemed Corves line, has invoked the ancient Solstice Vow with Rellian Vance. According to the venerable traditions of the Solstice rites, should Rellian Vance accept, they are now legally betrothed, their union to be celebrated at the close of the Sunken Palace’s week-long wedding rites.” Her ex-fiancé’s gala. Merrick’s wedding. The very place she needed to infiltrate. It was unfolding exactly as she’d hoped. But Rellian’s eyes, as they met hers, held a knowing glint that made her stomach clench. He leaned in, his gaze dropping to her mouth, and the air crackled with a sudden, potent energy. The drone zoomed closer, its whirring lens focused on them. “A kiss, my dear,” Rellian murmured, his voice now a silken command, “for the cameras.” His lips descended, soft at first, then firm, demanding. It was a practiced, perfect stage kiss, designed for maximum civic impact. But as his mouth settled over hers, heat bloomed sharply through Savia, startling her. His hand tightened on her back, pulling her flush against him, and the kiss deepened, a slow, intoxicating exploration that stole the air from her lungs. She could taste the spiced amberwine on his tongue, feel the surprising strength of his embrace. It was more than an act; it was a performance designed to utterly consume. When he finally pulled away, leaving her gasping, her lips tingled, her composure momentarily shattered. She was genuinely flustered, a sensation she despised. He watched her, a triumphant, almost predatory gleam in his eyes, before offering another languid smile to the magi-lenses. “Indeed, a most enthusiastic acceptance.” The mage-announcer’s voice cut through the air, piercing the bubble of their open display. “Further details regarding the fulfillment of the Solstice Vow! Per the ancient codex, a newly betrothed couple, bound by the Solstice rites, must share a single, designated honeymoon suite at the location of their betrothal announcement’s conclusion. In this instance, the Sunken Palace of Lirial.”
