Chapter 10 of 10
The Wyrdlands Dawn
960 words
Orvokki's remaining mercenaries, a dozen men and women in the distinct deep crimson of the Carminum Hand, raised their energy rifles. Desperation painted their faces. “Stand down, boy!” one of them yelled, his voice cracking. “This is madness!”
Ilmari didn't respond with words. He lowered his hand. The ground vibrated with a deeper resonance. A relentless tide of segmented bodies, the monstrous Grayskins and the multi-limbed horrors from the upper levels, surged forward. They didn't roar; they moved with an unnerving, synchronized precision that stole the breath from the mercenaries' lungs. It wasn't an attack, but a suffocating advance, an organism of chitin and muscle expanding to fill the chamber.
Kantola’s loyalists, hardened veterans, held their ground, their rifles tracking the horrifying procession, but their faces were grim. Their orders were to contain Orvokki, not to engage this impossible force.
Orvokki shrieked, a sound of pure terror, as her elite forces were enveloped. There were no screams of agony, no sounds of struggle. Only the wet, heavy thuds of bodies being crushed, the snapping of bone, and the sickening rending of synthetic armor. The monstrous horde didn't tear; it consumed, swallowed by the sheer, overwhelming mass of Ilmari’s creatures.
In seconds, the Carminum Hand’s presence was erased. The space where they stood was now a churning, multi-legged sea of creatures, their forms slowly receding, leaving behind only the polished, blood-slicked concrete.
Orvokki stood alone, swaying. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, fixed on Ilmari. “No… this wasn’t the plan. We were meant to save her. My daughter…” Her voice trailed off, a broken lament.
Ilmari walked closer, the chitinous army parting for him like water, revealing Kielo, still pale but now stirring, the life-force draining conduits disconnected. He knelt by her side, pressing his palm to her forehead, a familiar gesture of reassurance. Kielo’s eyes fluttered open, finding his. A small, weak smile touched her lips.
He stood and turned to Orvokki. “You would have drained her dry,” he stated, his voice devoid of emotion. “For a ghost. For a selfish fantasy.”
Orvokki’s face contorted, a mask of grief and rage. “You don’t understand! We could have brought it back! The purity! The bond! Your parents… they tried to stop it, but they were fools! Weak!”
Ilmari paused, processing her words. His parents. The 'failsafe key'. He looked at the mangled conduits, at the remnants of failed experiments around them. He saw the truth in her eyes, not just desperation, but a twisted belief.
He raised his hand again, not towards her, but upwards, a silent communication to the unseen structure that permeated the lab. The ice-blue text appeared before his eyes.
[Gazer Authority Confirmed. System Interface: Chimera Protocol Engaged.]
[Target: Matron Orvokki. Skill: Life-force Resonance. Action: Sever Connection?]
Ilmari stood rigid. Kill her? The temptation was a cold whisper, a logical conclusion to the nightmare she had inflicted upon his family. But he looked at Kielo, stirring faintly behind him, and knew that wasn't the path. His fight was not for vengeance. It was for freedom.
He chose. Not termination. Not death. Something far more absolute.
[Action Confirmed: Severance of Life-force Resonance. Target will be unable to access System functions or Class abilities.]
Orvokki cried out, a sound not of pain, but of utter emptiness. She clutched at her chest, her body convulsing. The aura of power, the faint shimmer of skill that all Awakened bore, simply vanished from her. She was just a woman, alone, without the very essence that defined humanity in this fractured world. Her power, her influence, her very identity, stripped away. A shell.
Kantola stepped forward, his expression grim. “Matron Orvokki, you are under arrest for crimes against humanity, illegal experimentation, and the kidnapping of Kielo Vesa.” He signaled his squad. Two of them moved to secure the now powerless Matron. She offered no resistance, her eyes vacant, a profound silence radiating from her.
Ilmari stood, watching her, then turned to Kantola. “The information. We need to broadcast it. All of it.”
Kantola nodded, pulling a comm-link from his belt. “I’ve already secured the main relay. My loyalists are standing by. We will expose Project Chimera, the guilds’ manipulation, and the truth of the Awakening. The city-states will know.”
Hours later, as the dawn light began to bleed through the perpetual mist shrouding the peninsula, Ilmari stood on the Academy’s highest observation platform, Kielo leaning against his shoulder. The broadcasts had gone out, echoing across the fortified city-state of Vesiros, then to others. The truth, raw and brutal, was tearing through the established order. Guilds were in chaos. Their authority, once absolute, was crumbling.
Below, the last of Kantola’s loyalists secured the underground laboratory, their faces etched with exhaustion and awe. Ilmari felt the pull of the creatures within the lab, a vast, silent chorus awaiting his direction. He felt the raw, primal energy of the 'failsafe key' inside him, the conduit to power his parents had forged.
He took a deep breath, the cold sea air filling his lungs. He looked at Kielo, her eyes still heavy but filled with a peace he hadn't seen in years. She was safe. That was all that mattered.
Then, with a conscious effort of will, he reached within himself and pushed. He severed the connection. The silent chorus faded. The raw power that hummed beneath his skin receded. He was just Ilmari Vesa again, a young man from a fallen family. He had used the power, exploited its flaws, and now he was done with it.
He looked out, not at the city, but at the rolling mist of the Wyrdlands, stretching into an infinite, unknown horizon. A new sun, pale and distant, began to rise over the warped landscape.
[Connection Lost. New Source Detected. Query: Continue?]
