Chapter 7 of 10
Collision Mesh

Iron boots thudded against the flagstones outside, heavy, rhythmic, and multiplied by twenty. The oak doors groaned under an impact that buckled their bronze reinforcement plates.
"Imperial Arbiter units," Kyradis whispered, her pale knuckles tightening around the curved hilt of her silver rapier. The haughty tilt of her chin remained, though a pulse fluttered at the base of her throat. "Bramir must have held the seal of the Grand Justiciar. They answer only to the Emperor's bloodline, or whoever holds the Sovereign Key."
"They come for her," Iscara said. She stood between the entry and Nilya's cot, blue rime crusting along the hem of her robes. Frost crawled up the legs of the examination tables. "They will walk through my corpse before they touch your kin, Korshan."
"Quiet. Both of you," Korshan snapped. His ribs flared with dull fire from Bramir’s earlier blow, but his hands worked with mechanical precision. He swept three glass tincture bottles off a low, iron-rimmed medical tray. It clattered against the tile.
He had no bag. His quick-slots were grayed out, sealed behind Bramir's administrative lockout code. He had no mana to spark a single flame.
What he had was a ninety-degree corner where two load-bearing granite slabs joined, resting over an unpaved sub-vault.
[WARNING: ROOT PERMISSIONS REVOKED.]
[ERROR: ASSET RETRIEVAL IN PROGRESS. TARGET: NILYA DRAST.]
"Korshan?" Nilya’s voice was thin, a dry leaf scraping against flagstone. She curled her small fingers around his wrist. Her skin felt like chalk. The black veins of the soul-siphon were already creeping past her collarbones, pulsing to the beat of the scarlet barrier contracting overhead.
"Keep your limbs tucked in," Korshan ordered, hauling her against his chest. "Whatever you see, don't scream. Sound recalculates player position."
"What madness are you planning now, you brute?" Kyradis hissed, but she backed toward him, her back pressing against the cold stones. "The door will not hold another strike!"
The timber blew inward with an explosive crack. Splinters whistled through the ward like shrapnel.
Six figures stepped through the haze of pulverized wood. They wore matte-black plate armor, unadorned by crests, their visors slit horizontally to reveal twin pinpricks of golden light. These were Bramir’s clean-up constructs—high-tier imperial executors whose damage values scaled with a target's maximum health pool. Even Iscara’s legendary ice shield would melt in three strikes.
"Subject Korshan Drast: Marked for excision," the lead guard intoned. A voice flat, synthetic, devoid of breath. "Entity Nilya Drast: Secured for core assimilation. Comply, or—"
"Get behind me!" Korshan roared, yanking Iscara by the elbow just as the lead guard leveled an obsidian arbalest.
Iscara stumbled backward into the corner, wedged tight against Kyradis. "Korshan, let me fight! I can hold them until—"
"Shut up and crouch!"
Korshan dropped to his knees, pressing the wooden tray flat against the seam of the perpendicular stone walls. He angled the edge at precisely forty-three degrees, wedging it beneath his boot heel while gripping Nilya against his ribs.
In *Chronicles of the Ascendant*, physical terrain collision checks ran on a legacy physics engine that updated twice per frame. If an entity occupied the exact coordinate of a joint while wedged between a prop object and two static textures, the world calculated the player's presence as invalid.
And when space became invalid, the engine flushed you down.
"Excision protocol: fire," the guard commanded.
Bolts of searing purple mana tore through the air, shrieking with enough kinetic force to pulverize bone.
Korshan hammered his heel into the tray.
*Crack.*
The edge snapped into the seam. For a fraction of a microsecond, the universe resisted. The stones screamed—a sharp, digital whine that pierced the skull. Korshan felt the horrifying pull of a void snagging his flesh. The boundary gave way.
The world simply ceased to be solid.
The floor vanished. The stone, the air, the roar of the crossbows—all of it blinked out. They fell.
Kyradis let out a choked gasp, her fingers clawing at Korshan’s coat. Iscara twisted in mid-air, hands erupting with defensive frost, but the magical frost found no surface to cling to. It drifted away like pale dust in a cavernous, pitch-black nothingness.
They tumbled down into the underbelly of the game.
Above them, the Bastion of Kryll hung like a hollow cardboard cutout. From underneath, the sprawling fortress possessed no depth—just floating, transparent polygons, inverted roofs, and luminous wireframe grids suspended in empty space. The crimson sky was merely a painted dome stretched over a yawning chasm.
"By the Ancestors..." Kyradis breathed, her arrogance utterly stripped away. Her eyes mirrored the terrifying abyss. "The world... it has no roots. It is hollow."
"Hold on to each other!" Korshan yelled over the whistling rush of cold static. "Terminal velocity threshold coming up!"
He aimed their fall toward an uneven mass rising from the unrendered bottom. Most dropped entities fell until they hit the bottom kill-plane, but early developmental builds always had an asset dump—a staging ground where deleted models and scrapped prototypes were tossed to clear memory.
They struck the mass.
It was not rock. It was cold, soft, and slightly damp.
Korshan rolled, absorbing the impact as his shoulder took the brunt of the landing. He kept Nilya pinned safely against his chest. Iscara tumbled beside them, skidding on her knees, while Kyradis landed on all fours with an undignified grunt.
"Nilya?" Korshan demanded instantly. "Talk to me."
"I'm... I'm here, brother," she gasped, shivering against him. "The air... it smells like burnt grease."
Korshan stood, dragging his boots out of the heap beneath them. He looked down.
A grey face stared back up at him.
It was an identical face. His face. But the corpse wore iron scout leathers from a build long forgotten. Its skull was crushed, its jaw frozen in a silent death-rattle. Beside it lay another—this one clad in an assassin’s cowl, missing its limbs, the torso bearing the distinct, jagged burn of an aborted lava-skip.
And beyond that lay thousands more.
A mountain of bodies, piled forty yards high in the dark. Every single corpse bore Korshan’s features. Different gear, different cuts, different failed runs from a lifetime spent trying to beat an unyielding simulation before his soul was shoved into this wretched reality.
Kyradis scrambled backward, her hands sinking into a pile of cold, severed wrists wearing the Drast crest. "What is this place? Korshan... who are these men? Why do they all have your face?!"
Her voice cracked. The composed noble was gone, shattered by the macabre spectacle of an infinite charnel house beneath the universe.
Iscara did not look away. She slowly rose to her feet, her gaze sweeping over the endless dunes of dead Korshans. Her expression drifted into something terrifyingly tender, an intoxicating blend of reverence and raw madness.
"You've died so many times," she whispered, her hands rising to cradle her own cheeks. "For us? For me? All these lives... all these tragedies... you endured them all alone."
"Don't flatter yourself, Iscara," Korshan said coldly, stepping off the ribcage of a past incarnation. "They're failed attempts. Nothing more."
Before she could speak, a blinding golden light tore through the void above them.
The shadows retreated instantly. A massive, gilded parchment unfolded in the air, glowing with celestial brilliance, humming with a chord of impossible purity. It bore no system error codes; it bore the unmistakable signature of the world's prime creator.
[DIVINE HEROINE PROCLAMATION DETECTED.]
[TARGET: ISCARA VONDRA.]
[OFFER: THE CROWN OF THE TRUE PROTAGONIST.]
A woman's voice, warm, angelic, and utterly merciless, echoed across the graveyard of dead speedrunners.
*"Child of Light. The timeline fractures around an aberration. The soul known as Korshan Drast was never meant to survive the first trial. His continued existence corrodes the architecture of creation."*
The light concentrated, pouring directly into Iscara’s chest. Her eyes reflected the brilliant, immaculate gold. A magnificent broadsword of pure starlight materialized before her, hovering point-down, offering its hilt to her trembling grip.
*"Take up the Blade of the Ascendant. Strike down the Anomaly. In return, your sister of fate shall be cured of her affliction, the crimson barrier shall dissolve, and you shall become the eternal sovereign of the dawn."*
Nilya went rigid in Korshan’s grip. Kyradis froze, her rapier trembling as she looked from the radiant celestial blade to the girl who possessed the power to wipe them all out.
Iscara slowly raised her hand, reaching toward the golden hilt.
