Teyo caught himself on a now-jagged doorframe, the velvet peeling away from the metal. His eyes scanned the chaos, a dull ache settling behind them. His carefully cultivated shortcuts, his serene napping nooks – all of it ripped away. He could practically feel the virtual architects of this reality smirking. This was what they wanted: raw, messy combat. The *intended* way. “Hold the perimeter!” Zallan shouted, already positioned in front of Teyo, his curved blade a silver blur. His eyes, usually so fixated on Teyo’s every subtle movement, darted with genuine alarm. Brilla, however, knelt beside a collapsing side table, carefully collecting her hexagonal tarts from the floor. “The baking humidity is completely ruined,” she murmured, more concerned for her baked goods than the collapsing reality around them. “The mana is so unstable today. My ovens are barely holding temperature.” The floor beneath them gave way with a screech of tortured metal, plunging them into a rushing torrent of concentrated blue ether. It wasn’t a gentle flow; it pulled and clawed, tasting of ozone and raw power. They splashed into a cavernous space, dimly lit by glowing mana-veins running through the exposed hull. Strange, bioluminescent flora clung to the dripping walls, pulsing with an eerie light. “This isn’t right,” Teyo muttered, pushing himself up, the polished stick still clutched in his hand. “This is a traversal dungeon. The ‘Flooded Mana-Veins’ section. It’s supposed to be accessed much later, after the training grounds, and only for high-ranked students.” He kicked a half-submerged pipe, kicking up a shower of glowing droplets into the air. “And it’s notoriously annoying to navigate.” Before he could elaborate on the precise annoyance, a shadow detached itself from the deeper gloom of the cavern. It was massive, easily three times Zallan’s height, with eight chitinous legs propelling it through the swirling current. Its head, a bulbous mass of eyes and snapping mandibles, turned towards them, emitting a series of high-pitched clicks. It was an Elder Kraken-class Enforcer, a mini-boss designed to gate progress in high-level zones. “A deep-tier boss!” Zallan yelled, a thrill in his voice. “A true test of skill! Teyo, your brilliant tactical silence tells me you have a plan!” He charged forward, steel humming. Teyo pinched the bridge of his nose. “No, Zallan, my silence is just me being tired. The plan was to nap through this entire patch.” He sighed. “Fine. Standard procedure for an Elder-tier beast. Aim for the eye clusters, exploit the elemental weakness to static discharge, and avoid the mana-spit. Except…” He looked at his notched wood. “My weapon is fundamentally unsuited for this.” Zallan’s charge was a whirlwind of practiced strikes, but the armored beast shrugged off his blows. The creature retaliated, slamming a massive leg down, knocking Zallan skidding across the stones. The azure tide churned into a frenzy around them. Teyo knew he had to do something, even if he despised the method. He lunged, aiming for one of the beast's lower, exposed leg joints, a known weak point. He swung the bamboo claw with all the force he could muster, a desperate, honest-to-goodness *attack*. It connected with a dull *thwack*, bouncing harmlessly off the leg. The bamboo claw vibrated in his hand, mocking his futile effort. The colossus barely registered the impact, turning its gaze towards him, a dozen eyes blinking slowly. “Oh, you’re just *asking* for it, aren’t you?” Teyo grumbled, utterly defenseless. He dodged a mana-tendril that snapped where his head had been a moment before. “This is ridiculous. I’m a crafter, not… not a frontline brawler with a bamboo stick!” Brilla, who had been meticulously inspecting her tarts, finally looked up. Her brow furrowed. “Oh, dear. Your opponent seems… rather tough, Zallan. Are you sure you’ve prepped your stat-buffs properly? Mother always said a well-balanced meal improves combat prowess.” She held up a tart, its hexagonal surface shimmering. “Perhaps it needs more… density?” She reached into her satchel and pulled out a fist-sized lump of raw dough, glowing faintly. It looked like a normal ball of dough, but it pulsed with an unnerving internal light, humming with concentrated mana. “This is my new experimental ‘Mana-Brick’ dough. For fortified buns. It’s… quite compact.” Without another word, she wound up and hurled the dough at the multi-legged terror. It sailed through the air with surprising speed, a trajectory far more accurate than any throw Teyo had ever seen her make. The Mana-Brick struck the creature's central eye cluster with a sickening *CRACK*. The dough didn’t splatter; it detonated, releasing a concussive blast of raw, hyper-compressed mana. The chitinous plates around the eye cluster fractured, spiderweb cracks spreading across its armored hide. The monstrosity recoiled, screeching in agony, a torrent of dark ichor spewing from its damaged head. Its legs flailed wildly, tearing chunks from the cavern walls. [ *Abyssal Log: Unregistered item: 'Mana-Brick Dough' deployed. Anomalous damage detected. Querying…* ] “Yes! Teyo’s genius is unmatched!” Zallan roared, seeing the opening. He launched himself at the stunned monster, his edge finding purchase in the newly exposed flesh. He hacked and slashed with renewed vigor, a blur of motion. Each strike opened new wounds, the behemoth's movements growing sluggish. With a final, furious cry, Zallan plunged his blade deep into its core, severing a vital mana-duct. The creature shuddered, its eyes fading, and then slumped into the pooling current, dissolving into a shimmering cloud of experience points. Zallan stood over the vanishing remains, chest heaving, his face alight with triumph. He turned to Teyo, beaming. “Another victory, Teyo! All thanks to your incredible tactical silence! You anticipated its weakness, you empowered Brilla, you truly are the greatest strategist in all the Atolls!” He gave a deep, theatrical bow, wiping ichor from his blade. Teyo just stared, dumbfounded. The sheer, unadulterated luck. Brilla, completely oblivious, began kneading more of her volatile mana-dough, humming a cheerful tune. Kemi, who had been quiet, observing the chaos with wide, almost unnaturally still eyes, suddenly doubled over. A guttural sound tore from her throat, a choked sob that quickly escalated into an agonizing, ear-splitting scream. The soft glow of her virus flared, no longer contained, and her body began to distort. Bones stretched, skin rippled, and her limbs elongated, twisting into grotesque, sharp angles. She rose from the glowing river, levitating, her eyes now twin pools of pure, raw destruction, her form shifting, hardening, becoming a monstrous herald of the Crimson Swell.
