Chapter 2 of 10
Aggressive Housekeeping

His handwriting. The bound parchment felt cool and smooth in Teyo’s grasp, the hide worn soft from handling. He cracked it open. The first page contained a single, stark warning: *DO NOT TRUST THE CHIMES. THEY LIE.* Below it, a frantic diagram: a series of overlapping squares labeled 'Collision Box Manipulation – Backscratcher Variant'.
“A new tome, Teyo?” Zallan’s voice was a low hum as he neatly stacked a fresh pile of Teyo’s sleep shirts. “Perhaps a sacred text detailing the ancient art of… cushion stacking?”
Teyo ignored him, his gaze fixed on the dense script. It was a speedrun guide, an insane, obsessive chronicle of every obscure glitch, every sequence break, every server-side exploit imaginable for the Tide-Strider Conservatory. It described how to trigger a 'Recursive Cushion Spawn' by forcing a specific furniture hitbox into an infinite loop within an unrendered zone. The key, it seemed, was his curved rake.
He lifted the reed strip from his lap. It was just a grooming implement, a plain, unassuming length of polished bamboo with a curved, five-tined head. Yet, this manual claimed it could pry the very fabric of reality at its weakest seams. The author – *himself*, somehow – had scrawled a note next to the furniture diagram: *The system sees a 'tool'. It registers 'contact'. It doesn’t register 'impossibility'. Exploit the blind spots.*.
He swung the bamboo implement in a practiced arc, tapping the far corner of the plush VIP bed. The notes specified a precise angle, a specific force. He nudged a bolster already resting there, pushing it infinitesimally into the wall. There was no audible click, no visual effect, just a tiny ripple in the air that only Teyo seemed to perceive.

Before his eyes, the bolster began to multiply. Soft, cloud-like forms bloomed from the wall, piling onto the bed, then spilling onto the floor. They were identical, each one perfectly fluffed, each one radiating pure, unadulterated comfort. Within moments, the cabin was a sea of cushions, a soft, yielding landscape of down and silk. Teyo burrowed into the nearest mound, a satisfied sigh escaping his lips. His future self had understood. This was peace.
He was about to drift off when a harsh clang echoed from the far wall. Not the wall that Zallan had burst through, but the *other* solid wall, the one meant to separate this unrendered VIP zone from the main Conservatory hallways. A deep, resonant thrum indicated a forced entry. The system, oddly, remained silent.
A figure emerged, pushing past rippling distortions in the air. It was a senior Aspirant, their academy uniform – emblazoned with the crest of the elite ‘Tide-Binder’ faction – pristine and arrogant. This was Jorn, a known brute with a perpetually scowling face, famous for ‘re-educating’ newer students. Jorn was supposed to be in the sparring docks, not *here*.
“Well, well,” Jorn sneered, eyeing Teyo half-buried in the downy avalanche. “Look what the Current-Flow dragged in. So this is where the lowest-ranked dock-scrub hides, using some low-level dimensional tear to skip basic training. Thought you could just vanish, did you, Teyo? The Crimson Swell won’t care if you nap through it. You’ll be pulp, just like the rest of the weaklings.” His eyes narrowed. “And a rank-one Aspirant hiding in a… pillow fort. Disgusting. Time for you to learn what real pain feels like.”
Jorn’s hand began to glow with crackling mana, forming a spear of hardened water. He took a step forward, his boot squishing into a cushion. But before he could take another, Zallan moved. It wasn't a dash, it was a blur. One moment he was meticulously folding a blanket, the next he was a protective barrier, a whirlwind of cultivated aggression between Teyo and Jorn.
“Lord Teyo is… indisposed,” Zallan stated, his voice calm, but with an undercurrent of lethal promise. His eyes, usually placid, sparked with a dangerous light. “His REM cycle is paramount. Any disturbance will be met with… extreme prejudice.”
Jorn scoffed. “You? A basic combat AI? Get out of my way, glitch-bait, or I’ll dismantle you too.”
Zallan’s smile was thin. “A basic combat AI, you say?”
He moved with impossible speed, a blur of motion that defied the laws of physics. His hand lashed out, not with a weapon, but with an open palm, striking Jorn’s water-spear before it could fully coalesce. The impact wasn’t a blunt force; it was a precise, targeted disruption. Jorn’s mana construct exploded in a shower of harmless mist. Zallan’s other hand shot out, not at Jorn’s face, but at his knee, striking a nerve that collapsed the senior Aspirant’s leg. Jorn buckled, grunting in surprise and pain.

Before Jorn could even curse, Zallan had him by the scruff of his neck, hoisting him effortlessly. Jorn’s feet dangled, his face turning an alarming shade of purple as Zallan began to march him back towards the shimmering rift he’d created. “Protecting Teyo’s REM cycle is my sacred duty,” Zallan intoned, his voice echoing with an unnatural, almost programmed reverence. With a sickening crunch, he slammed Jorn face-first into the wall and then, with another terrifying display of strength, *shoved* him back through the glitched boundary, sealing the tear with a casual flick of his wrist. A faint wail of humiliation and pain drifted back before the wall became solid once more.
Teyo blinked slowly, watching the spot where Jorn had vanished. Zallan turned back, his expression serene. “My apologies, friend Teyo,” he said, bowing slightly. “A minor disturbance. Your rest shall not be interrupted again.” He then resumed his folding, humming a gentle, tuneless melody.
Before Teyo could fully process the utter brutality of Zallan’s ‘housekeeping’, the wall rippled again, this time with a soft, warm glow. A new figure stepped through, entirely unperturbed by the recently closed rift or the lingering scent of ozone. It was Brilla, Zallan’s fiancée, her delicate hands holding a steaming basket woven from sun-bleached kelp.
She looked around the down-filled cabin, raising an eyebrow in appreciation, but entirely ignoring the evidence of a recent violent expulsion. “Oh, Teyo! I heard… well, I heard a lot of unpleasant crashing. So I thought you might need some fortification.” Her eyes crinkled in a genuine, sweet smile. “I just baked a fresh batch of Glimmer-Dough Puffs. They’re full of concentrated mana and just a hint of coral-berry. Perfect for a long… session.” She gestured vaguely at the pillows.
She offered the basket to Teyo. The pastries inside glowed with a soft, internal light, smelling of warm honey and distant ocean breezes. He took one. It was still warm, melting on his tongue, a burst of energy that he felt, for once, might actually *help* him achieve a truly profound nap.
“Thank you, Brilla,” Teyo mumbled around a mouthful of pastry. He glanced at Zallan, who continued to fold Teyo’s undershirts with intense focus, not once looking at his fiancée. Brilla didn’t seem to notice, or care. She merely hummed contentedly, already pulling out a small, intricately carved wooden rolling pin from a pouch at her hip. “I think I’ll set up my Coral-Berry Tartlet station over here,” she announced cheerfully, selecting a clear patch of floor between two towering silk mounds.
Before Brilla could even lay out her first baking mat, another, more urgent fracture tore through the air. This wasn't a wall clip, it was a sudden, violent distortion of light and shadow, as if the very air itself was being ripped. Kemi, Teyo’s fiercely loyal best friend, appeared, her usual bright smile replaced by a furrowed brow of concern.
“Teyo! I felt… a massive system fluctuation! Are you alright? I tracked your signature to…” Kemi stopped mid-sentence, her gaze falling on the cushion-packed room, then the calmly baking Brilla, then the aggressively tidying Zallan. Her eyes, usually a warm hazel, suddenly flickered. They didn’t just change color; they flared with a terrifying, corrupted crimson light, an angry, unnatural red that pulsed like a dying star. The air in the room grew heavy, thick and still. The soft glow from Brilla’s pastries froze. Zallan, mid-fold, became utterly motionless, a silent statue. Even the swirling dust motes in the air hung perfectly still.
