Chapter 1: Echoes in the Ruin

930 words

Grit scraped under Kaelen's boots. Dust motes danced in the slivers of weak light piercing the collapsed ceiling of the Clockwork Cathedral. Every breath burned, tasting of pulverized stone and ancient, stale magic. A low growl rumbled, vibrating through the cracked floor. He pressed himself against a crumbling pillar, its gears long seized, listening. Closer. Much closer. Violet light pulsed from deeper within the ruin. A putrid smell, like ozone mixed with decay, thickened the air. Kaelen gripped the hilt of his runic blade, its familiar weight a cold comfort against his palm. He drew a deep, ragged breath, then moved. Footsteps echoed, too loud in the oppressive silence. He rounded a broken altar, its intricate carvings defaced by some terrible force. There it was. The Void Leech. It was a horror of corrupted magic, a pulsating mass of shadow and raw energy, roughly the size of a battered cargo truck. Gangly, blackened tendrils writhed from its amorphous body, each tipped with a jagged, crystalline claw. Its maw, a gaping abyss rimmed with glowing violet teeth, twitched with hunger. It sensed him. One tendril shot out, faster than Kaelen anticipated. He ducked, the air whistling past his ear as the claw gouged a deep trench in the stone pillar he'd just abandoned. Fragments exploded outwards. This wasn't just a scavenger. This was a predator, imbued with a hunger that warped reality. Kaelen unsheathed his blade. Runes along its edge flared with a dull, silver light. He lunged, aiming for the creature's core, a swirling vortex of violet energy. His blade met resistance, sparking violently as it bit into the corrupted flesh, but only shallowly. Another tendril whipped around, catching Kaelen's arm. Pain flared, a burning cold that seeped into his bones. He gritted his teeth, tearing free, the sharp claws leaving angry welts across his forearm. The creature hissed, an ugly, wet sound. He needed an advantage. His gaze darted around, searching. The cathedral was a graveyard of power, its arcane mechanisms shattered. Broken gears, conduits, and conduits lay scattered like forgotten bones. Suddenly, the Void Leech roared, a sound that threatened to shake the remaining stone from the ceiling. It lunged, all tendrils extended, a living storm of destruction. Kaelen scrambled backwards, dodging a sweeping attack that pulverized the altar into fine dust. He was cornered. A wall of rubble blocked his retreat. The creature advanced, its violet maw widening, tendrils coiling to strike. Desperation clawed at his throat. This wasn't like the smaller aberrations he usually purged. This one was stronger, faster, fueled by something darker. His family's faces flashed in his mind. The cold dread of failure, the helplessness. He couldn't let it happen again. Not here. Not now. His eyes fixed on a glint of metal almost hidden beneath a slab of masonry. A Chronos Gear. Shattered, its intricate clockwork mechanism fractured, but still humming with faint, residual energy. An ancient artifact, imbued with the magic of time manipulation. No choice. Kaelen knew the risks. Absorption was never clean. The echoes of previous wielders, their memories, their desires, always lingered, threatening to overwrite his own. But the alternative was obliteration. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly. The Void Leech's tendrils were inches from his face, their stench suffocating. His fingers closed around the shattered gear. It was cold, then searing hot. A jolt ripped through his body. A phantom sensation of a thousand moments rushing past, time stretching and snapping. Memories, not his own, flooded his mind – a frantic engineer perfecting a delicate escapement, a general ordering a strategic retreat, a lover's final kiss. The past pressed in, threatening to drown him. Kaelen gritted his teeth, forcing the foreign sensations back, focusing on the surge of raw power. It flowed from the gear, into his arm, then through his chest, burning, aching. His hand flared with golden light, the broken artifact dissolving into pure energy, absorbed into his very being. Suddenly, the world around him slowed. The Void Leech's lashing tendrils seemed to crawl through treacle. The dust motes hung suspended. Sounds became elongated, drawn-out groans. A faint hum vibrated within him, a sense of accelerated perception. Movement. He darted forward, a blur of motion. The world snapped back to normal speed for an instant, then elongated again. He moved with impossible swiftness, weaving between the sluggish tendrils, a ghost in the creature's perception. Kaelen brought his blade down, aiming for the core once more, the newfound speed amplifying his strike. The silver runes on his blade flared blindingly. He felt the impact, a satisfying crunch as the blade bit deeper, tearing through the corrupted energy. The Void Leech shrieked, a sound of pure agony. Violet ichor sprayed, sizzling as it hit the stone. The creature recoiled, its form rippling, tendrils thrashing wildly, no longer focused on Kaelen. Its attack had faltered, its focus broken. He staggered back, breath coming in ragged gasps. The burning in his hand intensified, a raw, throbbing pain that reached deep into his arm. The echoes of the Chronos Gear’s past users still reverberated, a discordant chorus in his mind. He was alive, but the cost felt heavy. His body, his very essence, felt fragile, stretched taut by the borrowed power. Victory was fleeting. A deeper, guttural roar echoed from the cathedral's depths, a sound that made the very foundations tremble. Kaelen's gaze whipped towards the source. A fresh, shimmering tear in the fabric of reality, much larger than any he'd encountered before, had ripped open near the cathedral's grand, shattered altar. It bled out a toxic, violet light.
