Chapter 2: The Camera

2.4k words

The morning light, thin and unforgiving, pricked at Sully’s eyelids. His head throbbed, a dull, persistent beat behind his temples. He blinked, the ceiling a blurry expanse of white. A familiar ache settled in his stomach, a cocktail of cheap wine and lingering guilt. He rolled onto his side, the rumpled sheets twisting around his legs, and squinted at the empty space beside him. Amanda. The memory of her warmth, her soft murmurs against his ear, felt both distant and alarmingly vivid. He ran a hand over his face, scrubbing away the last vestiges of sleep, but the imprint of the night remained. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, the cool floorboards a shock against his bare feet. The house was too quiet. No clatter of pots, no drone of the morning news from the living room. Ronny was an early riser, usually puttering about by now. A quick glance at his phone confirmed it was past nine. He stood, a wave of dizziness washing over him, and steadied himself against the dresser. This wasn't just a hangover; it was the heavy weight of consequence. He pulled on a pair of old sweatpants and a faded t-shirt, the fabric scratchy against his skin. The hallway was still, the doors to the other bedrooms closed. Amanda's room, Ronny's room. He padded towards the kitchen, expecting to find at least one of them, perhaps already at the coffee maker, ready to offer a knowing smirk or a concerned glance. The kitchen, however, was also empty. The ceramic mugs hung neatly on their hooks, the toaster silent on the counter. A lone ray of sun angled through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Then he saw her. Shannon. She sat at the small kitchen table, a chipped mug cradled in her hands, steam curling up past her chin. She wore a thick, cream-colored terrycloth robe, cinched tight at the waist, and her usually wild blonde hair was pulled back in a loose, messy bun. Her eyes, usually sparkling with an almost mischievous energy, seemed shadowed, distant. She looked up as he entered, her gaze meeting his, and a shiver traced its way down his spine. There was something in her eyes, a stillness he hadn't seen before. Something calculating. “Morning, sleepyhead,” she said, her voice a low murmur, softer than usual. She didn't smile. Not really. The corners of her lips twitched, a ghost of a smile, then settled back into a flat line. He cleared his throat, suddenly acutely aware of his bare chest beneath the t-shirt, the stubble on his jaw. “Morning. Where is everyone?” he asked, trying to sound casual, but his voice came out a little raspy. He reached for a mug, his hand trembling slightly as he poured himself some of the dark, lukewarm coffee left in the pot. It tasted like ash. Shannon took a slow sip from her mug. “Ronny went to the hardware store. Something about a leaky faucet. Amanda… she left early, said she had a call to make.” Her gaze lingered on him, dissecting. He felt like an insect pinned under glass. “Quite a party last night, huh?” He shrugged, forcing a nonchalant air he didn't feel. “Yeah, a bit. Got a little out of hand.” His heart hammered against his ribs. He wondered how much she knew, how much she’d guessed. Shannon had been the first to disappear, claiming a headache. Had she seen something? Heard something? The questions churned in his gut, souring the taste of the coffee. Shannon set her mug down with a soft clink. “Out of hand, you could say.” She watched him, unblinking, as he took another swallow of the bitter liquid. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, until it felt like a physical presence in the room. He shifted his weight, wanting to flee, but his feet felt rooted to the spot. Her eyes held him, cold and knowing. The air crackled with unspoken words, with a tension that made the hairs on his arms stand on end. Suddenly, she pushed her chair back, the legs scraping loudly against the tiled floor. He flinched. She stood, her gaze still fixed on his, and slowly, deliberately, undid the belt of her robe. His breath hitched. He watched, mesmerized and horrified, as the soft terrycloth parted, revealing the smooth curve of her shoulder, the pale skin of her collarbone. He swallowed hard, his throat dry. What was she doing? His mind raced, scrambling for an explanation, for a way to look away, but he couldn’t. The robe slipped from her shoulders, pooling silently on the floor around her feet. She stood there, completely naked, her body slender and unblemished in the morning light. Her hands were at her sides, palms open, almost inviting. A small, almost imperceptible smile played on her lips now, a predatory curve. He stared, frozen, his coffee forgotten in his hand. His eyes darted across her, taking in the soft swell of her breasts, the delicate line of her stomach, the dark triangle between her legs. He could feel the heat rising in his face, a mixture of shock and something else, something primal and unwanted. “Surprised?” she asked, her voice a low purr. She took a step towards him, then another, closing the distance between them. Her gaze never left his face, those calculating eyes seeing right through him. “You should be. You think you’re the only one with secrets, Sully?” She stopped inches from him, close enough for him to feel the warmth radiating from her skin. The scent of her, faint and clean, filled his nostrils. He stammered, “Shannon, what… what are you doing?” He tried to avert his gaze, but it felt impossible, like looking away would concede some invisible battle. He felt trapped, exposed, even though she was the one standing naked before him. He knew, with a sudden, sickening certainty, that this wasn't about him being caught; it was about something much darker. She reached out, her fingers brushing lightly against his arm. Her touch was like an electric shock, sending a jolt through him. “I know about you and Amanda,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper, intimate and chilling. His blood ran cold. He tried to pull away, but her grip, though light, felt impossibly strong. “Don’t look so shocked. You weren’t exactly quiet.” She let out a soft, humorless laugh. “Or subtle.” “How?” he managed, the word a strangled croak in his throat. His eyes searched hers, desperate for an answer, for a way out of this nightmare. He couldn't remember leaving any evidence, any sign. They had been careful, hadn't they? Her smile widened, revealing a flash of white teeth. “Remember Ronny’s old camcorder? The one he used to film all our Christmases when we were kids?” He nodded slowly, a knot forming in his stomach. “He left it charging in the living room last night. Must have forgotten to turn it off completely. Or maybe the record button got bumped. Doesn’t really matter how, does it? The point is, I found it this morning. And I watched.” The words hung in the air, a hammer blow to his chest. An old camcorder. He pictured the clunky device, usually tucked away in a dusty cabinet, now a silent, damning witness. Shame washed over him, a hot, suffocating wave. He imagined the footage: him, Amanda, the fumbling, the hushed gasps, all captured in grainy detail. His breath hitched in his throat. His entire life, everything he had built with Ronny, with this family, was about to shatter. “Shannon, please,” he pleaded, his voice barely audible. He looked away then, unable to meet her gaze, the image of the camcorder’s red recording light burning behind his eyes. “Don’t tell Ronny. Please. It was… a mistake. We were drunk. It won’t happen again.” He felt pathetic, groveling, but the thought of Ronny knowing, of the betrayal, was unbearable. She tilted her head, her eyes still fixed on him, an unnerving glint in their depths. “A mistake, huh?” Her fingers trailed lower, tracing the line of his arm, across his bicep, then down to his wrist. Her touch felt possessive, a claim. “It didn’t look like a mistake to me, Sully. You both looked like you wanted it. Like you were starved for it.” She paused, her voice dropping again, a low, suggestive whisper. “And honestly, watching it… I was incredibly turned on.” His head snapped up, his eyes widening. He stared at her, aghast. The raw, unfiltered admission hung in the air, shocking him more than the revelation of the camera itself. He saw the truth of it in her eyes, the dark, hungry look that had replaced the earlier calculation. She wasn’t just blackmailing him; she was aroused by his transgression. A shiver, not of fear but of something else, something dangerous and exciting, ran through him. “You… you were turned on?” he repeated, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. The absurdity of it warred with the undeniable heat building in his own body. Her nakedness, her proximity, her perverse confession – it was all a potent, intoxicating mix. He felt a shameful tremor of desire stir within him, a betrayal to every fiber of his being that screamed at him to run. She nodded slowly, a sensual curve to her lips. “More than I’ve been in years.” Her hand, which had been resting on his wrist, now slid up his arm, her thumb brushing against the rough stubble of his jaw. Her eyes, dark and heavy-lidded, seemed to bore into his soul. “So, here’s the deal, Sully. You want to keep your secret safe?” She leaned in closer, her breath warm against his ear, smelling faintly of coffee and something else, something sweet and musky. “Then you give me what I want.” His mind screamed for him to refuse, to push her away, to run for the door and never look back. But his body felt sluggish, weighted down by a sudden, overwhelming lust. The image of the camcorder, the footage of him and Amanda, flashed behind his eyes. Ronny’s face, contorted in anger and hurt. The shame. The absolute ruin. It was too much. The thought of losing everything, of destroying the only family he had left, choked him. And then there was her, naked, desirable, her gaze stripping him bare in a way the camera never could. He looked into her eyes, searching for a way out, but found only an unyielding resolve, a fiery hunger that mirrored the one now raging within him. Her fingers traced the line of his neck, then dipped lower, hooking into the collar of his t-shirt. She tugged, gently, insistently, pulling him closer until their bodies almost touched. He could feel the warmth of her skin, the subtle brush of her breast against his arm. Her scent was intoxicating, pulling him under. The bitter coffee mug slipped from his fingers, clattering to the floor, forgotten. “What… what do you want?” he choked out, the words barely a whisper. His resolve had crumbled, replaced by a desperate, aching need. The shame was still there, a dull throb beneath the surface, but it was being rapidly eclipsed by a more immediate, insistent urge. He was a moth to her flame, utterly consumed by the heat. Her smile was triumphant, a slow, sensual curve. “You know exactly what I want, Sully.” She leaned in, pressing her body against his, her pubic bone a soft mound against his sweatpants. He felt the sudden, undeniable hardness beneath the fabric. He was lost. His hand, unbidden, reached out, finding the small of her back, his fingers digging into the soft flesh. He pulled her closer, desperate for contact, for oblivion. Her lips parted, her breath ragged. “The living room couch,” she whispered, her voice husky with desire. “Just like you and Amanda.” Her words, a twisted echo of his betrayal, only fueled the fire. He didn't care anymore. He just needed to feel, to forget, to drown in the illicit heat of her body. He scooped her up, his arms wrapping around her thighs, and she let out a small gasp, wrapping her legs around his waist, her arms locking around his neck. He carried her out of the kitchen, past the shattered mug and spilled coffee, his eyes fixed on hers, a silent, desperate understanding passing between them. He stumbled into the living room, the weight of her in his arms a sweet burden, and lowered her onto the plush velvet of the couch. She lay back, her hair fanning out around her head, her eyes still on his. He ripped off his t-shirt, then fumbled with the drawstring of his sweatpants, shedding them quickly. He was on her in an instant, his mouth finding hers, hungry and urgent. Her lips were soft, yielding, tasting of passion and desperation. Her hands tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, her body arching up to meet his. The soft velvet of the couch pressed into his back as he moved over her, his hips grinding against hers, a frantic rhythm taking hold. Her legs wrapped tighter around him, pulling him deeper into her, a guttural groan escaping his throat as their bodies finally connected. He was lost, consumed, plunging into the forbidden depths of her. The shame, the guilt, the memory of Amanda – it all faded, replaced by the raw, visceral sensation of her body against his, the fierce, animalistic cries that escaped her lips matching his own desperate sounds. He felt her nails digging into his back, a delicious pain, as he thrust into her, faster and harder, until the world dissolved into a blinding white-hot wave. He collapsed onto her, panting, his head buried in the curve of her neck, her scent filling his senses. His body trembled, satiated yet strangely empty. He felt her fingers tracing patterns on his spine, soft and deliberate. Then, a sudden, sharp rap on the front door shattered the silence, echoing through the house, making them both freeze.
