Chapter 3: A Symbiotic Pact Signed

Speed pressed Max back into the cracked vinyl seat. He gripped the dashboard as the red Plymouth Fury accelerated, her engine screaming like a wounded beast. Dust whipped against the windshield in thick, choking sheets. The storm outside had mutated into a swirling wall of grit, but the car didn't slow down. Sand choked the carburetor, forcing a wet, ragged cough from deep within the engine block. The vehicle shuddered violently, her tires spinning wildly on the loose shifting dunes. Inside the cabin, the heat was suffocating. Sweat mixed with old grease on Max's forehead, stinging his eyes as he stared at the speedometer needle bouncing dangerously close to the redline. Every dial on the dashboard glowed with a sickly, pulsing green light. The radio dial spun erratically of its own accord, spitting out sharp bursts of static and high-pitched squeals. "Stop!" Max growled, his voice raw from the dust. He slammed his boot onto the brake pedal, but it sunk uselessly to the floorboards with zero resistance. Metal shrieked in protest under the chassis. The Plymouth was running blind, driven by an unnatural, predatory hunger that Max could feel vibrating through the floor panels. He grabbed the heavy chrome door handle, throwing his body weight against it. The mechanism refused to budge. Heavy steel rods inside the frame clicked into place with a sound like a chambered round. She was locking him in, keeping him as a helpless passenger in her desperate run. Locked tight, the cabin felt more like a metal coffin with every passing second. Max could hear the engine's mechanical agony, a harsh rattling that any black-finger could diagnose in an instant. This demonic machine was choking to death on the wasteland's dust. The fine quartz sand of the dunes was clogging her intake valves, restricting the flow of oxygen to her combustion chambers. Engine pistons hammered in an uneven, limping rhythm. If she kept pushing at this speed, the block would crack, seizing her gears and leaving them both stranded in the deep sands. "You are choking," Max yelled over the deafening roar of the dying V8. He slapped the dashboard, trying to get the attention of the entity dwelling within the iron. Sand was filling her throat, and she was too stubborn to stop. Max leaned closer to the instrument cluster, his breathing shallow in the stifling, hot air. "I can fix you," Max offered, his voice dropping to a low, desperate bargain. "I am a black-finger. I know how to clear those intake valves and make this engine breathe again." Static screamed from the dashboard speaker, a loud, grating hiss that made Max wince. The radio needle stopped suddenly on a dead frequency. Music emerged through the white noise, a distorted, slow-tempo love song from a world that had died a century ago. The lyrics hummed with a dark, possessive promise. A voice crooned about eternal devotion, the melody warped by the cracked speaker cone. The Plymouth slowed slightly, the violent shuddering of her chassis settling into a tense, expectant idle. "We have a deal," Max muttered, his knuckles white against the seat frame. "But you have to let me out to clear the lines. Unlock the doors." Suddenly, the locks popped up. The loud, synchronized click echoed through the cabin like a pair of snapping jaws. Heavy doors swung open into the howling wind. Max didn't hesitate, diving out of the car and landing hard on the shifting, hot sand. Max scrambled to his feet, intending to run into the safety of the rocky canyons nearby. He had no intention of keeping his word to a possessed demon of steel and glass. Cold wind hit his face, carrying the sharp, unmistakable scent of rotting meat. He froze, his boots sinking into the loose gravel. Low growls echoed from the shadows of the surrounding dunes. The sandstorm was clearing, revealing dozens of glowing, yellow eyes circling the narrow valley. Out of the dust stepped the scavengers of the deep desert. They were mutated wasteland wolves, their bodies distorted by radiation and hunger. Mutated wolves emerged in a tight, snapping circle. Their skin was hairless and scarred, stretched tight over ribcages that showed every bone. Gray skin hung in loose folds around their thick necks. Their jaws were modified by nature into horrifying, multi-rowed shears, dripping with a thick, black bile. Jaws dripped with hunger as the alpha wolf stepped forward, its throat rattling with a wet, gurgling growl. Max reached for his holster, but his shotgun was gone, lost during the crash. Desperation clawed at his chest. He was completely cornered, with no weapons and no high ground to defend himself against a pack of thirty starving predators. He backed toward the idling Plymouth. The car sat silent, her dual headlights glowing with a dim, dying yellow light as her engine coughed and sputtered. Christine sat idle, her doors still open, watching him. She wasn't moving to help; she was waiting to see what her chosen driver would do. "Open up!" Max shouted, lunging back toward the open passenger side door as the first wolf leaped. The heavy metal door slammed shut right in his face. Wolves lunged forward, their claws clicking against the rocks. The alpha snapped at Max's boot, tearing a chunk of leather from his heel as he scrambled onto the hood. Reaching through the open cowl vent near the windshield, Max spotted the auxiliary fuel-bypass line he had noticed earlier. It was a clear vinyl tube running directly into the primer pump inside the cabin. Under the dashboard, the manual primer bulb was dry. The engine was starving for pure fuel, choking on the sandy air mixture. Sharp steel met flesh. Max pulled his survival knife from his boot and sliced a deep, jagged line across his left forearm. Crimson liquid welled up instantly, thick and hot. He didn't hesitate, pressing the open, bleeding wound directly against the suction valve of the auxiliary fuel intake line. Pressing his sliced arm to the intake, he felt the engine's vacuum pressure lock onto his flesh. It began to draw, pulling his blood directly into her fuel line. Vacuum suction pulled the dark red fluid through the clear vinyl tubing. Max gasped as a sudden, freezing chill raced up his arm, settling deep into his chest. Sickening heat rushed through his veins a second later, replacing the cold with a sudden, overwhelming surge of power. His heart hammered in perfect, terrifying synchronization with the firing of the engine cylinders. Pure euphoria crashed over his senses, a dark, intoxicating rush that made his vision blur. He could feel the fuel injectors firing; he could feel the spark plugs igniting the blood-rich fuel. Christine's engine screamed to life with a demonic, window-shaking roar. The headlights flared from a dull yellow to a brilliant, predatory crimson that illuminated the entire canyon. Tires tore into the sand, launching the heavy steel car forward with impossible speed. Max was thrown onto the roof, gripping the chrome trim as the vehicle transformed into a spinning vortex of metal. Screaming beasts were sucked beneath the heavy steel bumper. The car moved with absolute, razor-sharp precision, sliding sideways to crush three wolves against the canyon wall. Red mist sprayed from beneath the spinning rear tires. Christine spun in a perfect circle, her heavy chrome bumper acting like a scythe as she decapitated two more mutated beasts. Bones snapped under the weight of her solid steel chassis. Max felt every single impact, a sickening thrill of shared violence vibrating through his own bones. Flesh met chrome in a brutal, systematic slaughter. The Plymouth didn't just kill; she hunted, her tires tracking down the fleeing beasts and crushing them into the red-soaked sand. When the last wolf was silenced, the canyon fell into a heavy, suffocating quiet. The only sound was the wet ticking of the cooling engine. Panting, Max pulled himself back through the open window and sank into the driver's seat. His arm had stopped bleeding, leaving only a dark, silver scar where the deep cut had been. Looking in the rearview mirror, Max sees his own reflection's eyes briefly flash with the same malicious, predatory crimson as Christine's dual headlights.
