Velisra didn’t hesitate. Before the spy could even steady their footing, Velisra launched herself through the jagged opening, a low growl tearing from her throat. Her kickboxing instincts took over, A short cross caught the spy's jaw, followed by a shovel hook to the ribs. The brass tool hit the flags as the intruder folded to the stone, wheezing through split lips.
“Who are you?” Velisra snarled, planting a heavy boot on their chest, pinning them against the cold, damp stone. The air tasted like copper and ozone from Davri's detonation.
Davri leaned forward, blind milky eyes searching the dark. “Marek? Is that you?”
“Davri? You’re… alive?” The tuner rasped, chest hitching against the flags. “They said you were executed.” He looked past Velisra toward the blown-out wall, mouth twisting with bitter suspicion. “Another trap. Another royal game.”
Velisra pressed her foot down harder. “Answer the question. Who are you, and why were you listening?”
The tuner spat blood against the floor. “Marek. An acoustic tuner. And I followed *him*,” he said, jerking his chin toward Davri. “Looking for his stolen parchment. We shared a bench at the conservatory before the purge.” A ragged wheeze left him. “I work alone. Wanted to salvage whatever Kavos discarded. Pointless now.”
Velisra eased her weight off his ribs. “Up. Don't make a sound.”

A deadening silence smothered Velisra's ears, sight cutting to absolute pitch before snapping back. The Directive was warning her. She hauled Marek upright, snatching his dropped device. The device was a delicate thing of polished brass and intricate frequency-dials, clearly designed for precise, almost surgical sound manipulation. “Can you use this to jam incoming sonic strikes?”
Marek steadied himself against the masonry. “It isolates harmonics. But overloaded, yes, the feedback could distort—” Marching boots cut him off, accompanied by rhythmic brass hums echoing down the corridor.
“Kavos,” Marek whispered, paling. “He’s here.”
Velisra shoved Marek behind a shattered pillar, tucking Davri tight behind her shoulder. Armored footsteps doubled in volume. Crimson-cloaked sentries filed into the hallway, parting ranks for the figure between them.
Kavos stalked into the torchlight, sleek dark hair brushed flat, mouth twisted into a permanent smirk. Beside him loomed a scarred brute wrapped in gold-plated mail—a royal executioner, thick-necked and scowling.
Kavos surveyed the blown glass, his stare dragging across Davri before locking on Velisra. “Well, well. My songbird found company.” His gaze narrowed. “And violent company at that. I wasn't aware Sylas indulged in dramatic entrances.”
He still mistook her for Sylas. The empire’s top spy. It was a useful misconception, but the casual contempt for Davri, the implied ownership, set her teeth on edge. She held her tongue, forcing herself to maintain the icy, inscrutable façade of a loyal assassin.
Kavos closed the distance, the low pitch radiating from his signet ring vibrating in the teeth of everyone present. “Still blind, little bird? Still longing for an audience?” He laughed, dry and hollow. “A pity you won't witness the realm bend to your Symphony of Whispers. Three days until the Eclipse Gala. Then your life's work cements my throne.”
Davri drew back, throat working silently. His scarred palms clenched into fists against his threadbare sleeves.
Kavos chuckled. “Your agony gives the harmonics their edge, Davri. Such broken beauty.” He signaled the brute at his side. “Break his fingers, guard. He seems far too comfortable with working hands.”
The plated guard lunged, iron-shod gauntlet reaching for Davri's wrist. Velisra shifted her stance, setting her back heel.

A countdown flashed red behind her eyes, unneeded. Velisra pivoted on her lead foot, driving compressed air and sound around her shin until the corridor wavered like desert heat. Her roundhouse kick whipped across the guard's collarbone with concussive force.
The impact struck metal with a thunderclap. The collision lifted the two-hundred-pound guard off the flags, hurling him ten feet into the corridor wall. Breastplate buckled inward; his helm cracked against stone, and he collapsed into an unmoving heap.
Silence dropped over the hall. Sentries drew their blades, but Kavos raised two fingers to hold them back. His arrogance hardened into cold intrigue as he studied Velisra.
“Sylas,” Kavos said softly, pacing forward. “You kept secrets. That was quite the display.” His cane pointed toward the shadows where Marek crouched against the wall. “What is the purpose of this vermin behind you?”
“An unregistered tuner, my lord,” Velisra said, flattening all inflection from her tone. “Caught tampering near the lower archives. A security risk to your Gala.”
Kavos tapped his chin thoughtfully. “A convenient risk.” His lips parted in a wicked grin. “Then prove your discipline, Sylas. Kill the trespasser on the spot. Or I sever Davri's vocal cords before we leave this hall.”
The threat hung between them. Velisra looked from Davri’s pale, upturned chin to Marek’s hollow gaze. The Directive’s penalty buzzed behind her temples, locked against Kavos’s demand: strike down Davri's only friend, or watch Davri silenced forever.
