Chapter 1 of 10
The Glitch and the Guillotine
1.3k words
The crunch of bone beneath her knuckles was the first thing Velisra registered. Not the familiar thud of a heavy bag, nor the satisfying smack of a sparring partner’s padded mitt, but a sickening, brittle *crack* that echoed too loudly in the sudden, jarring silence.
Her fist, a blur of motion only moments ago, was buried deep in a man’s face. A uniform of dark, tightly woven sonic-silk, adorned with the gilded crest of a chiming bell, marked him as a hostile sentry. His eyes, wide with shock, rolled back into his head, and he crumpled, a slack marionette, onto the cold, polished stone floor. A low groan, raw and wet, bubbled from his throat, gurgling around what was surely a shattered jaw. His ornate sonic-resonator, a device shaped like a small, intricate harp, clattered from his belt.
Velisra stared at her hand, then at the unconscious guard. Her hand, slender and pale, was not her own. These were not her calloused, power-packed fists, honed by years of sweat and grit in the humid confines of her Earth gym. This body was lean, almost unnervingly graceful, with a whisper of power humming just beneath the skin that felt alien, yet strangely potent.
“What the hell?” she muttered, her voice a reedy, unfamiliar instrument.
Then, a new sound. Not from the physical world, but from inside her head, a voice like serrated steel scraping across a bronze plate. It was clipped, devoid of warmth, and utterly imperious.
[RETRIBUTION DIRECTIVE: Soul-swap error detected. Host identity compromised. Primary mission parameters remain unchanged.]
Velisra flinched, reeling back from the invisible assault. “Soul-swap? What are you talking about? And who are you?”
[ERROR: Query invalid. You are Velisra, designated Host 734. You are currently inhabiting the body of Commander Sylas, the Vesperian Ascendancy’s top spy. Mission: Arm Davri. Goal: Overthrow royalty. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination of consciousness.]
Sylas? Top spy? Velisra, a kickboxing coach from a world where the only 'ascendancy' she knew was getting off the couch for morning cardio, checked her footing on the slick flagstones. This was no nightmare hallucination. The crack of the guard's jaw was too real, the metallic tang of fear in her mouth too sharp. This 'body' felt… different. She flexed her fingers, and a faint, almost imperceptible shimmer of distorted air rippled around them. A shadow-skill? Was that what the disembodied voice meant by Sylas's capabilities?
[HESITATION DETECTED. IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED.]
Before Velisra could parse the command, the world zeroed out. Pain never struck; instead, existence vanished. Her sight dissolved into a blinding white-out, sound evaporated into a suffocating silence, the very air she breathed became tasteless, odorless. Her skin felt like a numb husk, unable to distinguish texture or temperature. It was pure, unadulterated sensory deprivation, so absolute it felt like her mind was being flayed alive, an agony far more profound than any physical blow.
It lasted only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity. When the world snapped back into focus, Velisra gasped, her lungs burning, her head throbbing as if pounded by a thousand tiny hammers. Her vision swam, then sharpened, landing on a scene below that ignited pure, blistering rage.
Below, in the sprawling, echoing courtyard of what could only be the Chiming Citadel – a place she now knew was a gilded cage – a figure was being brutalized. Two hulking guards in the same sonic-silk uniform as her recent victim were systematically beating a slight, disheveled man. He was sprawled on the grimy flagstones, his hands clasped over his head in a futile attempt at protection. His tunic was torn, revealing an alarming network of fresh bruises and older scars. But it was his eyes that struck Velisra like a physical blow – or rather, the empty, milky white film that covered them. Blind.
Davri. The name materialized in her mind, fed by the System's directive. *Davri.* This was him. The tragic, blinded musical genius. The target. And they were breaking him.
The guards laughed, a harsh, grating sound, as one delivered a vicious kick to Davri’s ribs. A choked cry escaped the man, raw with pain and resignation. The sound ignited something primal in Velisra, stripping away the shock of her new reality, the confusion of her stolen body, the lingering sting of the System’s punishment. She didn’t care about subtlety, about understanding Sylas’s shadow-skills, about mission parameters. All she saw was a defenseless man, being savaged, and the immediate, overwhelming need to *stop it*.
“You bastards!” Her own voice, even in Sylas's reedy throat, ripped through the air with a newfound ferocity.
She launched herself from the elevated walkway where she’d apparently materialized, a human projectile. It wasn't the graceful, silent descent of a trained spy. It was the blunt, unrefined dive of a kickboxer aiming to close distance and inflict maximum damage. She landed with a jarring impact, the stone jarring her unfamiliar bones, but her fury lent her strength. Her first target was the warden still kicking Davri.
Velisra’s right leg whipped out in a brutal, textbook roundhouse kick, not aimed at the man’s head, but directly at the back of his knee. The joint buckled with a wet crack, driving the guard to his knees, howling. Before he could even register the source of the attack, Velisra pivoted, her left elbow driving upwards with all the force of her Earth-honed instinct, connecting squarely with his jaw. Another sickening crunch. He collapsed, unconscious, beside his victim.
“Hey! What in the…!” The second guard, a brute with a face like pitted rock, spun around and drew a heavy truncheon from his belt. He never raised it. Velisra, moving purely on instinct, felt a strange, thrilling hum of power surge through Sylas’s body. She thrust her open palm forward, not a punch, but a direct, focused projection of raw acoustic energy.
A sharp, percussive *thwum* tore through the air. The warden staggered back, his eyes bulging, a visible ripple of distorted space emanating from his chest where the invisible force had struck. He choked, clawing at his throat, his face rapidly turning an alarming shade of purple as his windpipe seemed to seize. Velisra didn't wait. She closed the distance, a blur of motion, and delivered a swift, brutal knee to his groin. He folded like a broken doll, gasping for air that wouldn’t come, before she finished him with a swift, merciless chop to the back of his neck.
Silence descended again, thick and heavy, broken only by Davri’s ragged breathing and Velisra’s own panting. She knelt beside him, her gaze scanning his injuries, a deep ache twisting in her chest. His face, smeared with dirt and blood, was contorted in a mixture of terror and utter confusion. He recoiled slightly as she reached out, a purely defensive instinct.
“It’s okay,” she said, her voice softer now, though still hoarse from her earlier shout. “They’re gone. You’re safe.”
Davri slowly lowered his hands, his sightless gaze sweeping past her, trying to find purchase in the auditory landscape. “Who… who are you? What was that sound?”
“Just someone who breaks bullies,” Velisra replied, keeping her tone grounded. She touched his shoulder, anchoring him to the flagstones. He flinched again, then, as her touch remained, steady and reassuring, a fragile understanding seemed to dawn on his face. He was still trembling, but the terror in his features had begun to recede, replaced by a bewildered awe.
[ROYAL PATROL DETECTED. THREE GUARDS. APPROACHING FROM WESTERN CORRIDOR. INITIATE ELIMINATION PROTOCOL.]
The metallic rasp of the directive cut through the lull. Velisra could already hear the distinct, rhythmic clang of heavy boots on stone, growing louder, closer. A royal patrol. Three of them.
[EXECUTE THE PATROL IN SIXTY SECONDS, OR FORFEIT YOUR HOST’S HEART.]
