Chapter 1: The Golden Cage Shatters

Cold steel bit into the first thick lock of hair. Snip. Heavy, dark strands fell onto the polished hardwood floor like dying crows. Trembling slightly, her hands gripped the heavy metal shears tighter. Gazing back from the vanity mirror was a face too beautiful for its own good, pale and hauntingly delicate. This wasn't her original face, but she was slowly forcing herself to accept the bizarre reality. Memories that didn't belong to her swirled in her mind, heavy with grief and damp river water. A day ago, the original owner of this body had thrown herself into the freezing depths of the Liangma River. Depressed, broken, and humiliated after losing the Best Actress award to her bitter rival, the poor girl had simply given up. Online, the public had been merciless, branding her a talentless hack who only knew how to cling to wealthy men. Instead of death, however, the freezing river water had welcomed a completely different soul into the drowning shell. In her previous life, Xian was an absolute legend. Known as the 'tactical tyrant' of the global e-sports league, she had ruled the gaming world with an iron fist, cold-blooded strategies, and unmatched reflexes. Fingers that used to dance across mechanical keyboards at lightning speed were now holding rusty scissors. Roaring crowds, flashing neon lights, and the sweet scent of championship victory had been her entire existence. But a sudden, silent heart failure on the grand stage had cut her reign short, throwing her into this parallel Earth in the year 2015. Waking up in this weak, fragile body was bad enough, but finding herself locked inside a high-tech fortress was worse. Ever since her eldest brother, Ye Chen, was kidnapped during their childhood, her parents had completely lost their sanity. They had paid the massive ransom, but the boy was never returned, leaving a permanent, festering wound of paranoia in the household. Fear dictated every single second of their lives from that day forward. Erasing her public records, keeping her home-schooled, and surrounding her with private security was their way of 'protecting' her. Living as a ghost, hidden from the world, was their definition of safety. When she was brought back from the hospital after her 'suicide attempt,' her parents had reinforced the locks on her doors and hired armed guards. Her mother had wept bitterly while locking the bedroom door, repeating the same old lie: 'We are doing this for your own safety, Xian'er.' Suffocation was not safety. Running away as Ye Xian, the pampered, missing daughter of the wealthy Ye family, would trigger a massive nationwide manhunt. Becoming someone else was her only chance to survive and breathe. With a final, decisive sweep of the shears, she cut the remaining waist-length locks. Jagged, boyish tufts now framed her sharp jawline, completely transforming her soft features into those of a rebellious youth. Stripping off her silk nightgown, she grabbed a thick roll of heavy-duty medical tape from the bedside drawer. Pain flared through her chest as she wound the adhesive tight, flattening her curves until her chest was as flat as a board. Rough adhesive tore at her delicate skin, restricting her lungs and forcing her to take shallow, burning breaths. Gasping for air, she ignored the stinging sensation and pulled an oversized black hoodie over her head. Looking in the mirror, she adjusted the hood and stared at the handsome, slightly effeminate young man looking back. Perfect. Living as a fake man was a dangerous gamble, but it was the only way to navigate the cutthroat entertainment industry without her family tracking her down. Her manager, Lin, had left a series of panicked messages on her old phone before her parents confiscated it. An upcoming gaming-survival reality show, *The Ultimate Arena*, was looking for fresh faces. With her god-level e-sports reflexes and strategic mind, she could easily conquer the competition. Money, fame, and ultimate independence were just within her grasp. But there was a massive, seemingly insurmountable hurdle standing in her way. Lu Jinye, the tyrannical, ice-cold CEO of Star Entertainment, had personally signed a ban on her. Due to the original Ye Xian's desperate attempts to find a backer, she had repeatedly pestered Lu Jinye's younger brother, Lu Chuan. Jinye, a man who loathed opportunists, lies, and deception above all else, assumed she was a scheming, gold-digging boy trying to corrupt his sibling. 'If I see that pest near my family again, I will personally ruin him,' Jinye had reportedly told his executives. Smirking, she let her eyes flash with a familiar, dangerous competitive fire. Let him try. Once she proved her worth on that reality show, even the almighty Lu Jinye wouldn't be able to ignore her talent. First, she had to escape this gilded prison. --- Outside, lightning split the sky, casting stark shadows across her bedroom. Wind howled like a wounded animal, rattling the triple-paned glass windows. Sneaking down the spiral staircase, she pressed her back against the cold marble wall, holding her breath. Below, her mother stood in the grand foyer, holding a cashmere shawl tightly around her shaking shoulders. Security guards in black suits stood at attention near the massive double doors, looking stoic. 'My husband is still at the office dealing with the press,' her mother whispered, rubbing her temples. 'They cannot find out that Xian'er tried to end her life. The media would tear our family apart, and the kidnappers... what if they think she is vulnerable and try again? We must keep her locked inside. It is the only way.' 'We understand, Madam,' the head guard replied. 'The patrols have been doubled. No one gets in, and she certainly cannot get out.' Xian watched from the shadows of the upper landing as her mother walked toward the main security console. Flashing red lights illuminated her mother's pale face as she entered the daily rotating passkey. Seven. Four. Nine. Two. One. Eight. Beep. Beep. Beep. Heavy metal bolts slid back with a dull, echoing thud. Her mother stepped out onto the covered veranda to speak with the gatekeepers, leaving the foyer temporarily empty. Waiting for this exact moment, Xian darted down the remaining stairs. Her soft-soled sneakers made absolutely no sound against the plush Persian rug. Slipping through the shadow of the grand piano, she reached the console. Her fingers flew over the keys, punching in the sequence: 7-4-9-2-1-8. Click. Side service door unlocked. Pushing the heavy door open just wide enough to slip through, she vanished into the pouring rain. Cold water immediately soaked through her thin hoodie, plastering the wet fabric to her bound chest. Rain blinded her, but she didn't care. Adrenaline surged through her veins like liquid fire, pushing her forward. Keeping low, she sprinted across the manicured lawns, avoiding the sweeping beams of the security floodlights. Scaling the low stone wall at the edge of the estate was easy for someone with her honed, athletic reflexes. Grabbing a thick oak branch that hung over the barrier, she swung her body over and dropped onto the muddy asphalt of the mountain road. Her lungs burned with a fierce intensity. Every breath felt like inhaling shards of glass as the tight medical tape constricted her ribcage. Her thighs ached from the steep descent down the mountain road, her feet slipping slightly on the slick, wet leaves. But the physical pain was a beautiful reminder that she was alive. She was no longer the depressed girl who gave up on life; she was a champion, a survivor, and she would fight with everything she had. Mud splattered her jeans, but she barely felt the cold. Freedom tasted like copper, rain, and wet pine. Running down the winding road, she looked back at the sprawling, locked villa shrinking in the distance. She was out. No more locked doors, no more suffocating silence, no more living as a ghost. Tomorrow, she would find Lin, secure her spot on *The Ultimate Arena*, and rewrite her destiny. Even if Lu Jinye wanted her banned, she would make herself impossible to ignore. Suddenly, a pair of blinding white high beams cut through the torrential rain, illuminating the slick road ahead. As she takes her first breath of cold, free air, a silver Bentley screeches to a halt inches from her knees, and the door swings open to reveal a pair of obsidian eyes staring from the shadows. Her brother is returned after the ransom is paid he is scientist now doing research in other countries and her second brother is a tycoon
