Live-Fire Liabilities

Daska’s hands flew to her chest, fumbling in the absolute dark. The cold metallic *SNICK* had echoed unnervingly, confirming the worst: the binding spell woven into her undergarment had ruptured. The pressure across her ribs, an oppressive constant since her awakening, vanished. A sudden, dizzying lightness expanded her lungs, allowing a breath so deep it ached. Her soprano voice, so long suppressed, thrummed against her collarbones, raw and vibrant, threatening to break free. She could feel the swell of her breasts, liberated from their magical suppression, pressing against the thin fabric of her uniform. Panic, sharp and cold, pierced through the lingering steam. If the lights returned, if any of them saw— “Dask? Are you alright?” Lekhan’s voice, raspy and oddly strained, cut through the black. It sounded closer than it should have. Had he moved? “Brio, you absolute idiot! What in the name of the Silent Echoes possessed you?” “He started it!” Brio spluttered, his voice muffled by the water. “He’s hiding something, Lekhan! I just wanted to see what!” “I’ll show *you* hiding something!” Lekhan growled. A heavy splash, followed by a grunt of pain from Brio. Lekhan was evidently still keeping him submerged, or at least his head underwater. “You try pulling a stunt like that again, Brio, and I’ll break every finger.” Daska’s frantic fingers finally located the broken clasp. It was a simple two-prong hook, now bent and useless. She cursed silently. There was a secondary, simpler fabric tie further up, designed as a backup. Her numb fingers worked to secure it, but it offered little of the magical compression of the main clasp. It would hold, for now, but loosely. She would need a repair. Or better yet, a new one entirely. “Lights! Maestro Zolok, the lights!” someone else called out from the darkness. A few moments later, a faint, flickering blue glow began to emanate from a crystal near the entrance, slowly expanding to illuminate the steam-filled cavern. Lekhan, still grappling with a thoroughly drenched Brio, looked up, his face a mask of furious concentration. His eyes, though, were quick to flick towards Daska, then away, a strange flush rising on his wet skin. He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling in sharp, uneven bursts. He released Brio with a shove that sent him sprawling, then turned his back to Daska, staring at the slowly brightening wall with a fixed intensity. His broad shoulders, slick with water, seemed to tense, and Daska noticed a faint tremble in his hands as he scrubbed at his face. The next morning, the air in the Mess Hall carried the pungent smell of spiced nutrient paste alongside Lekhan’s pointed, stony silence. He sat two tables away from Daska, his usual boisterous banter reduced to clipped replies, his gaze fixed on his bowl as if it held the secrets of the universe. He hadn't met Daska’s eyes once since the hot springs, a clear, baffling departure from his usual aggressive intensity. Even his taunts felt half-hearted, directed at anyone but Dask. Daska, meanwhile, felt the loose tie of her magical corset dig into her ribs with every breath, a constant, nagging discomfort. She had spent the night researching binding spells in the Academy’s archives, but the complex vocal magic required to craft a proper compression garment was far beyond her current scope. She’d have to find a tailor, a specialist. But that would mean exposing herself, something her past self had explicitly forbidden. A dangerous vulnerability in a world where her identity was a weapon waiting to be discovered. “Attention, Vanguard Voices cadets!” Maestro Zolok’s voice boomed through the Mess Hall, amplified by a subtle sonic charm. He stood on a raised platform, his monocle glinting in the morning light, a peculiar, anticipatory smile playing on his lips. “Today, we have a unique opportunity. A live-fire exhibition for our esteemed benefactors and the Harmonian press. A chance to showcase your formidable talents!” A collective murmur of excitement rippled through the ranks. PR exhibitions were rare, high-profile events, a chance to impress not just the public but the powerful patrons who funded the Bastion of Chords. A chance to be seen, to gain an edge. “You will face a captured abomination,” Zolok continued, his gaze lingering on Daska for a fraction too long. “A lesser noise-fiend, contained within a dampening ward for your safety. But remember, a true warrior performs under pressure. This is not a simulation. This is the stage.” The recruits were led to a massive, open-air arena carved into the side of a cliff face. Rows of VIPs, bedecked in glittering silks and military regalia, filled the tiered seats, their whispers echoing across the vast space. A shimmering, translucent barrier, humming with latent vocal energy, separated the audience from the arena floor. In the center, a hulking, grotesque creature, all jagged edges and pulsating shadows, thrashed against an invisible force field. It was a ravening chimera, a mid-tier brute of discord, its silent, destructive aura vibrating against the protective wards. Its form was a chaotic mess of obsidian shards, its mouth a gaping maw of ever-shifting teeth, perpetually trying to emit a sound that never came. Zolok stood before the barrier, addressing the crowd. “Today, you will witness the future of Harmonia! Our elite Vanguard Voices, ready to face the encroaching Static!” He paused, his eyes darting to a control panel near his hand. With a subtle, almost imperceptible movement, his fingers brushed a rune on the console, and a faint tremor ran through the air. Daska, her senses sharpened by her unique vocal perception, noticed a minute ripple in the containment barrier surrounding the beast, a momentary lapse in its integrity. Zolok's smile widened just a fraction. “Commence performance!” Zolok announced, stepping back. The Vanguard Voices, arranged in their practiced formation, launched into their debut song, a powerful anthem of unity and strength. Daska, standing next to Lekhan, forced her tenor to blend with the others, the constant ache in her windpipe a dull reminder of her secret. Her voice felt… different. Rawer, perhaps, with an undercurrent of something wild and untamed. It was a struggle to keep it in check, to maintain the ‘Dask’ persona. As the song reached its crescendo, the creature thrashed with renewed fury. The slight disruption Zolok had caused earlier was now a gaping tear in the wards. With a deafening shriek that ripped through the air, the beast burst free, shattering the invisible containment field. It ignored the recruits, its chaotic energy drawn to the concentrated pitch of the VIP audience. Panic erupted. Screams filled the arena as the brute lunged, its razor-sharp claw extended towards the front row, where a group of high-ranking officials sat frozen in terror. “Hold formation!” Lekhan roared, but his voice was drowned out by the chaos. The beast was too fast. Daska saw the claw descending, a lethal arc aimed at the neck of a renowned General. Her training, her instincts, screamed at her. She couldn’t break character. She *couldn’t* reveal her true voice. But if she didn’t act, innocents would die. Her internal conflict was a raging storm. Then, a decision was made. A surge of desperate power ripped through her. Her tenor, usually a controlled, even force, fractured. A high, ringing soprano note, pure and piercing, sliced through the beast’s cacophony, interwoven with a deep, resonant tenor rumble. It was a hybridized shockwave, raw and untrained, but devastatingly effective. The monster recoiled, its obsidian shards vibrating violently, a guttural groan escaping its maw. It was stunned, momentarily paralyzed, but the sheer force of Daska’s uncontrolled vocal magic tore at her own throat, a searing, agonizing pain. As Daska gasped, clutching her burning larynx, the fiend twitched, beginning to recover. Its gaze, now fixated on the source of the unexpected attack, swiveled towards Daska. Another claw strike, faster this time, aimed directly at her chest. She saw it coming, knew she was too slow, too spent from the last blast. Just as the claw was about to connect, a blur of motion. Lekhan, his face a grimace of furious determination, threw himself in front of her. The claw, meant for Daska, slammed into his shoulder with a sickening thud. Lekhan cried out, a sharp, raw sound of pain, stumbling back against Daska. His blood, thick and dark, immediately bloomed across his pristine white uniform. “You… fool!” Lekhan snarled through gritted teeth, pushing Daska roughly behind him even as he clutched his bleeding shoulder. Other singers, now recovered, swarmed the stunned creature, unleashing a torrent of synchronized vocal attacks that finally brought it down. But Lekhan didn't care. His eyes, burning with a furious, confused intensity, locked onto Daska’s. Without another word, he seized her arm, his grip surprisingly strong despite his injury, and dragged her away from the commotion, through a service tunnel, and into a cramped, dusty supply closet. The door slammed shut behind them, plunging them into oppressive darkness. Lekhan leaned back against it, his labored breathing filling the small space. His voice, strained with pain and a terrifying accusation, sliced through the gloom. “Why, Dask? Why does your Resonance feel exactly like the forbidden mind-control harmonics of the Dissonance?”
