Nerfed to the Anvil

Jurot brought the stoneware mug to his lips, the ceramic cool against his skin. The paralytic odor, a faint, metallic-sour tang, was a ghost on his tongue. He tipped his head back, letting the liquid slide down his throat, careful to only touch the very edge of his mouth, not to swallow. A practiced trick from his scavenging days, feigning consumption of spoiled rations. He lowered the mug, meeting Bapak Rendra’s gaze. The elder’s smile remained, a gentle crinkle at the corners of his eyes, but Jurot’s enhanced senses caught a flicker—a momentary tightening around those eyes, a breath held too long. It was the imperceptible tension of a predator watching its trap spring shut.
“A good brew, Bapak,” Jurot said, his voice level, no tremor betraying the volcano of his hidden fury. He set the mug down on the worn wooden table, a deliberate clink. “Feeling stronger already.”
Citra, perched on a stool across from them, watched Jurot with a keen intensity. She wasn’t smiling. Her gaze, grey as raw steel, narrowed. She knew him. Knew the subtle tells, the rigid set of his shoulders when he was suppressing something monumental. She picked up her own mug, inhaling deeply. Her brow furrowed, a slight tilt of her head. She glanced at Jurot, her chin tilted in a silent demand for answers.
Bapak Rendra chuckled, a soft, warm sound that grated on Jurot’s nerves. “Good, good. You’ll need every ounce of strength for the Zenith Ascendancy. It’s a brutal climb.” He gestured vaguely towards the clinic’s grimy window, where the upper levels of Megablock Seven gleamed, a stark contrast to their shadowed slum.
“The arena,” Citra murmured, her gaze distant. “I still need that black-box drive. The proof.” She took a cautious sip from her mug, her expression unreadable. Jurot saw her hesitate, then swallow. His gut tightened. Had she tasted it? Her senses weren't his, but her Vanguard training made her sharp.
He pushed down the fresh spike of rage. Not now. The arena. Okar. That was the target. Bapak Rendra would wait.
The Zenith Ascendancy qualifiers hummed with an almost audible dread. A vast, tiered amphitheater carved into the heart of Megablock Seven, its holographic screens flickered with combatants, their names and classes emblazoned above their heads in vibrant System script. The air thrummed with the anticipation of violence, the reek of synthetic sweat and ozone.
“You really think this will get us close enough?” Citra asked, her voice low, as they shuffled through the throng of hopefuls. Her Vanguard armor was gone, replaced by worn utility clothing, blending her into the urban crowd. Jurot wore the tattered remnants of his slum gear, his cast-iron wok strapped to his back like a grotesque shield.
“He’ll be there,” Jurot said, his gaze sweeping the arena. “He never misses a chance to watch the poor get butchered for his amusement.”
Magistrate Okar was, indeed, present. He occupied a sky-box, a transparent cube of reinforced plasteel, high above the main arena floor. His corpulent frame was silhouetted against the bright lights, a sneer clearly visible even from this distance on the colossal display screens that ringed the arena. Beside him, a towering figure in polished chrome plating stood, an arc-whip coiled at his hip. General Velum, Okar’s personal champion, a notoriously cruel enforcer from the elite ‘Arc-Wielder’ class.
“Next match!” a booming voice echoed through the arena. “The Scrap-Tier Qualifier between Basic Chef, Jurot Madi, and Arc-Wielder Initiate, Korynn Vane!”
A ripple of mocking laughter spread through the crowd as Jurot’s class flashed on the screen. `[Basic Chef: Jurot Madi]` juxtaposed with `[Arc-Wielder Initiate: Korynn Vane]`. The disparity was a punchline.
Korynn Vane, a lean, arrogant youth with perfectly sculpted hair and a disdainful smirk, stepped onto the shimmering arena floor. His right hand crackled with contained energy, a miniature sun glowing at his palm. He held a sleek, obsidian blade, its edge humming with superheated ion charge. It was an `[Omega-Class Ion Edge]`, designed to cleave through reinforced plasteel with ease.
Jurot walked onto the dusty floor, his wok heavy on his back. The crowd jeered, throwing scraps of synthetic food, their contempt pelting him alongside the synthetic compost. He ignored it, his eyes fixed on Vane, then flicking briefly to Okar’s sky-box. The sneer hadn’t left the Magistrate’s face. Good. Let him watch.
“A cook?” Vane scoffed, his voice amplified by the arena’s comm system. “What, are you going to sauté me?” He flicked his wrist, and the thermal blade extended, crackling viciously, spitting sparks. “This is a waste of my time.”
“Maybe,” Jurot replied, his voice calm, devoid of emotion. He unstrapped his wok, holding it loosely by the handle. The ancient cast iron, scarred and blackened from countless meals, looked absurd against the gleaming energy weapon.
Vane let out a bark of laughter. “A frying pan? You truly are trash.” He lunged, a blur of motion, the blue edge arcing down in a sizzling strike aimed at Jurot’s head. It moved with the speed of a professional, designed to end the fight in one humiliating blow.
But Jurot moved faster. His left hand, still human-like, shot up, clamping around the wok handle. His right hand, the one that had ripped apart an Enforcer drone, slammed against the curved surface of the wok. He swung it up, not as a shield, but as a blunt weapon. The heavy iron met the shimmering ionized blade with a deafening *CRACK* that echoed through the arena.
The crowd’s laughter died, choked in their throats. Okar, in his sky-box, leaned forward, his sneer replaced by a flicker of confusion. Vane's jaw dropped, horror twisting his features.
The weapon, a pinnacle of elite craftsmanship, *shattered*. Pieces of obsidian and crackling energy exploded outwards, showering the arena floor with dying sparks. The wok, still held firmly in Jurot’s grip, showed nothing but a faint scorch mark, a small patch of discolored carbon.
Vane stumbled back, clutching his sparking, useless hilt, his face contorted with shock and disbelief. The crowd was utterly silent, then a single, incredulous gasp rippled through the stands, growing into a low murmur of bewildered awe.
Citra, watching from the lower stands, gripped the guardrail until the metal creaked. She stared fixedly at Jurot’s unwavering stance. A *Basic Chef* had just destroyed an *Omega-Class Ion Edge* with a frying pan.
Then, the arena’s vast holographic displays flared. A cold, blue light engulfed the entire field. The Prime Directive’s voice, a chilling, synthesized monotone, reverberated through the speakers.
`[ALERT: ILLEGAL EXPLOIT DETECTED]`
`[CLASS ABILITY EXCEEDING PARAMETERS]`
`[NERF: Wok weight increased by 1000%]`
An invisible force slammed into Jurot. The wok, a moment ago a manageable weight, became a leaden anchor. His arm, still locked in the defensive posture, buckled instantly. The sheer, crushing mass of it pulled his hand down, pinning his arm against the gritty arena floor. His muscles screamed, tendons stretched to their limit, but the wok refused to budge, rooted to the spot.
Magistrate Okar’s face, projected on the giant screens, finally broke into a furious snarl. “Kill him! Kill the glitch!”
Immediately, four hulking figures, Okar’s personal ‘Axiom Enforcers,’ dropped from hidden hatches above, their heavy combat boots thudding onto the arena floor. Their energy shields glowed, and their magnetic-accelerator rifles hummed, locking onto Jurot’s exposed form. They fanned out, forming a deadly semicircle, their weapons raised. Jurot, his arm pinned, could only watch them approach. The roar of the crowd, now a bloodthirsty chant for his demise, surged around him. He could die here, an anonymous victim of the System’s merciless ‘Hotfixes,’ or he could expose the true, monstrous anomaly simmering beneath his skin.
