The Crown's Property

Qadira held the shimmering garment aloft, the spun platinum remarkably light against her calloused palms, yet the implications threatened to upend everything she believed. The Qalaran crest, subtle but undeniable, mocked every assumption she’d ever made about Kyros Moradi. Her infuriating, doting, *poor* husband. The man who’d fixed her laser faceter, who’d punched through a vault, who’d parried assassins, and now, who held a sovereign nation’s insignia in his casual grasp. “This isn’t just… fancy, Kyros,” she stated, her voice sharp with a new edge of suspicion. “This is royal. This is *the* crest. Where did you get this? What even *are* you?” Kyros leaned against the grimy wall of their safehouse, arms crossed, a familiar smirk playing on his lips. “A resourceful man, wife. One who understands that some battles are won not with fists, but with the right attire.” His gaze lingered on the dress, then on her, a possessive warmth in his dark eyes that set her teeth on edge and her pulse racing simultaneously. “You need to make an entrance tonight. A statement. This dress says ‘untouchable.’ That’s what you are, Qadira.” His evasion infuriated her, yet his logic was undeniable. Jaleel had stripped her of her required attire, aiming to strip her of her dignity and her chance at Zeki’s custody. This gown, impossible and breathtaking, was her shield. Her weapon. She still wanted to pummel Kyros for his secrets, but the Grand Carat Exhibition opening ceremony was hours away. She had no other choice. “Fine,” she bit out, snatching the gown closer. “But we are talking about this after. Every. Single. Detail.” Kyros merely chuckled, a low, resonant sound that vibrated through the small room. “As you wish, my gem-cutter. Now, let’s ensure you look every inch the queen you are.” Hours later, the Grand Carat Exhibition Hall, usually a cacophony of hushed deals and clinking crystal, fell into an unnerving stillness. The grand ballroom, awash in the glow of a thousand suspended crystalline lamps, pulsed with the cynical energy of Vespera’s elite. Every artisan, every financier, every power player was present, their gazes as sharp and calculating as the facets on a master-cut diamond. Then Qadira Zaim walked in. She moved with the fierce, unyielding grace of a desert huntress, utterly oblivious to the social currents she was disrupting. The spun platinum gown, a molten river of silver light, clung to her frame, each movement sending ripples of starlight through the room. It was not merely beautiful; it was a defiant, impossible declaration of wealth and power that no one in the Artisan Guild could comprehend. Her dark hair, usually a wild storm, was swept back in a severe, elegant knot, revealing the sharp angles of her jaw and the defiant fire in her eyes. Around her throat, a choker of raw, unpolished obsidian offered a stark, rebellious contrast to the dress’s impossible opulence. She looked like a storm, contained and shimmering, ready to unleash its fury. Murmurs, like the rustle of dry leaves, spread through the crowd. Faces contorted in shock, envy, and outright disbelief. Then, from a table near the main dais, a choked, sputtering gasp broke the sudden stillness. Jaleel Othman, impeccably dressed in a tailored midnight-blue tunic, was doubled over, crimson liquid splashing onto his pristine linen. He gasped, gagged, then coughed violently, his eyes bulging as he pointed a trembling digit at Qadira. A half-eaten canapé, a smear of caviar and truffle, lay ignored beside his spilled champagne. His face was a mask of furious, disbelieving rage. “You!” Jaleel shrieked, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, his voice cracking like dry timber. “You thieving harlot! That dress… that’s the ‘Radiant Serpent’s Veil’! It’s a Qalaran royal treasure! Priceless! It hasn’t been seen in decades! You stole it!” The ballroom erupted. Accusations, gasps, and frantic whispers filled the air. Qadira’s temper flared, a familiar heat rising in her chest. She took a step forward, her hand already clenching into a fist, ready to deliver a blow that would rearrange Jaleel’s already-crooked nose. Before she could move, a figure detached itself from the shadows near the dais. Razaq Vard, the ruthless, iron-fisted head of the Vespera Artisan Guild, a man whose word was law and whose stare stripped skin, moved with predatory balance. His presence commanded immediate stillness, the crowd parting like startled fish. Razaq Vard stopped directly in front of Jaleel, his face set like carved granite. Jaleel, still spluttering, tried to regain his composure, puffing out his chest. “Guild Head Vard! Arrest her! She has stolen a royal artifact! Strip her vendor tier! She is a disgrace to the entire Guild!” Kyros, who had been standing a few paces behind Qadira, calm and unreadable, gave Razaq Vard a subtle nod. It was a gesture that only Qadira, watching him with furious intensity, caught. Razaq Vard’s hand moved with blurring speed. Not towards Qadira, but towards Jaleel. A sickening *crack* echoed through the motionless ballroom as Razaq Vard’s open palm connected with Jaleel’s face. The force of the blow snapped Jaleel’s head to the side, sending him sprawling to the polished onyx floor, his ear ringing, a bright crimson welt already forming on his cheek. The entire hall held its breath. No one dared to move. No one dared to speak. Razaq Vard stood over the groaning Jaleel, his tone cold as slate. “You dare,” Vard growled, “to accuse the Crown’s property of theft? You dare to defile what has been designated as sacred by her royal consort?” Qadira blinked. *Crown’s property? Royal consort?* Her thoughts raced, trying to parse Vard’s words, trying to connect them to the man standing calmly behind her. It made no sense. None of it made sense. The quiet stretched, thick and suffocating. Jaleel lay stunned on the tiles, unable to respond. The assembled elite stared with parted lips. It was a face-slap of epic, unprecedented proportions, echoing through the cavernous hall. Then, without warning, the grand crystalline lamps above them flickered. Darkness descended, plunging the entire Exhibition Hall into an inky blackness. A collective gasp rose from the crowd, quickly stifled by a sudden, terrifying shift in the atmosphere. Red pinpricks of light, dozens of them, materialized out of the gloom. They swept across the room, methodical and deadly, before coming to an abrupt, chilling halt. All of them settled, with deadly precision, directly on Kyros Moradi’s chest.
