Chapter 4 of 10

Shadows and Silence

The sudden, total blackness hit like stone. The air in the medical bay, thick with ozone and the metallic tang of fresh blood, felt like a shroud. Nivesa's chest seized, locked by memories of the Great Blackout five years ago. The suffocating void returned, blotting out sight and orientation. Her hands flew up, blindly seeking, grasping only empty air. Panic, a cold serpent, coiled in her gut. She could hear nothing but the frantic thrum of her own pulse in her ears. Then, a low growl cut through the silent terror, a familiar rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. Boro. He was still there, a solid, snarling anchor in the abyss. Nivesa’s hand dropped, finding the thick fur of his neck, his muscles tense and alert beneath her touch. Loris, surprisingly, remained silent, a small, warm weight against her leg, his grip on her trousers surprisingly firm. She drew air hard into her lungs. This wasn’t five years ago. This was now. And she wasn't alone in the dark. She had Loris. And Boro. And an entire complex built from her nightmares, riddled with secrets only she knew. Her mind, still reeling from the shock, began to click through the blueprints, the hidden pathways, the lethal contingencies. “Boro,” she said softly. “Stay close. Loris, hold my hand.” Her fingers, slick with fear-sweat, found her son’s small, trusting hand. He didn’t question, didn’t whimper. Just squeezed. The silence stretched, broken only by the distant, muffled echoes of a firefight erupting elsewhere in the Spire. Tavros. His men. The fighting hadn't stopped, it had just shifted its battleground to the blind dark. Nivesa moved, slow and deliberate, each step a test. Her spatial memory, usually a precise tool, now battled the returning shadows of her past trauma. She calculated the distance to the hallway, the angle of the doorframe. The air crackled with the residual energy of the EMP, making her skin prickle. She felt her way along the wall, her fingertips mapping the cold, smooth surfaces of the medical bay. A faint rustle, barely audible, somewhere ahead. Too soft for Boro. Too heavy for Loris. Not one of Tavros's men, she knew. They were too disciplined for such careless movement. An intruder. Night vision, probably. She imagined the green phosphor of their optics cutting through the pitch. Her mind raced, calculating trajectories, escape routes, the architectural ‘surprises’ she’d embedded into the very bones of the Spire. This wing. The walkway leading to the eastern precipice. She remembered the specific sequence, the pressure plates, the hidden triggers. Her design had been born of paranoia, a failsafe for the unimaginable. Now, it was their only hope. “Stay low,” she murmured, pulling Loris closer, guiding Boro with a hand signal he wouldn’t see but would feel. They crept, Nivesa’s focus a laser, cutting through the fear. She felt the subtle shift in the floor’s texture, the almost imperceptible seam in the polished stone. It was here. The trigger plate. Designed to mimic a loose paving stone, barely yielding underfoot. Two dark shapes materialized in her peripheral vision, silhouetted against the faintest hint of reflected moonlight filtering through a distant window five stories above. They moved with predatory stealth, their low-profile gear rustling against ballistic nylon. Night vision goggles gleamed faintly. Mercenaries. Armed. Nivesa set her jaw. “Now,” she muttered under her breath, only to herself. She shifted her weight, placing her heel with pinpoint accuracy on the recessed pressure plate. A soft *click*, almost inaudible, was the only warning. Then, a rumble. Not thunder, but the grinding of immense gears, hidden deep within the cliff face. The floor beneath the two approaching mercenaries gave way with a sickening lurch. A massive section of the floor, twenty feet long and ten wide, tilted downwards, shearing away from the main structure. A scream, cut short by the rush of wind, followed by a double splash, far below. The roar of the crashing waves against the cliff face, now audible, swallowed any other sound. Two less. Her traps, her desperate creations, worked. She pulled Loris and Boro back, pressing them against the remaining wall, her pulse throbbing behind her temples. The darkness felt less terrifying now, a shield rather than a void. This was *her* darkness. Her domain. Another rustle. Closer this time. Too close. A sudden, powerful hand clamped over her mouth, another gripped her arm, yanking her backwards, away from Loris. Ice spiked through her marrow. Not another mercenary. This touch was different. Commanding. Familiar. It was the same overwhelming strength, the same scent of ozone and something uniquely masculine, that had permeated the blackout five years ago. Tavros. He was here. Before she could react, he pulled her flush against him, his body a solid wall, shielding her. A burst of gunfire erupted down the passage, ripping through the space where she and Loris had just stood. Bullets whizzed, embedding themselves in the wall opposite. Tavros cursed, a low, guttural growl against her ear, air warm against her cheek. “Stay quiet,” he hissed, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her, through every nerve ending. The contact, the sudden, fierce proximity, ignited a dangerous spark she hadn’t felt in years. It was terrifying, exhilarating. The chemistry, potent and undeniable, flared to life, mirroring that impossible night. He adjusted his grip, pulling her even tighter, his arm a steel band around her waist. “I know who he is, Nivesa,” Tavros said against her ear, his voice rough and low. The words were a revelation, a confession, a promise. “Loris. He’s mine. And I swear on the blood of my ancestors, anyone who touches him will burn. I will rip Corteza apart brick by brick to protect you both.” His voice held an edge of pure, chilling fury, a vow of impending devastation. Just as she processed the impossible truth, a sharp vibration against her hip jolted her. Her comm-tablet. A new message. She fumbled for it, her fingers trembling. The screen glowed faintly in the pitch darkness, illuminating Bramen’s name. Her mentor. Her only hope of escape. **BRAMEN TOL (TEXT):** *Rooftop. East Tower. Drop zone Epsilon-7.
