Chapter 9 of 10
Rewriting Fate
934 words
The incandescent spear of cosmic thunder bored through the broken sky, its colossal form filling the void above the altar, bent on scouring the Taiheng Realm from existence. Mingfeng, held rigid by the calligraphic seal, could only watch, the apocalyptic blue light gleaming in his unblinking stare as a single tear cut through the soot on his cheek. His lips, though unable to move, seemed to form the word, 'Forgive me.'
Shen Zimo felt the raw power plunging from the heavens. He felt the world shudder beneath his feet, groaning in its death throes. But he did not look at the sky. He looked at the man he had paralyzed with brushwork, whose reckless gamble had brought them to ruin. He looked at Lin Qingshuang, her breath shallow, her life-blood staining his robes, her body limp in his arms. The smoldering heat in his gut flared back into biting fury.
“You fool,” Zimo snarled, his voice a low growl, utterly devoid of his usual gentle cadence. He shifted Qingshuang carefully, then raised his hand. His palm connected with the Emperor’s cheek with a sharp, resounding slap that echoed in the sudden, terrifying silence that had fallen over the altar. The binding script, fractured by the blow, dissolved into thin vapor.
Zhao Mingfeng gasped, released from his frozen prison. The sting flared across his cheek before the roar of the collapsing vault drowned out his senses. He stumbled, catching himself, and for the first time, truly saw Zimo’s face. It was not the face of a gentle academic. It was the face of a protective guardian, etched with fury and grief.
“You selfish, arrogant fool!” Zimo spat, his eyes blazing with dark power. “You would die alone, Mingfeng? You would let the world burn because you are too proud to ask for help? Too proud to live?” He pointed toward the roaring thunderbolt. “This is your solution? To become a martyr and drag us all with you?”
Mingfeng’s gaze drifted from Zimo to Qingshuang, then to the terrified, kneeling army, their swords shattered, their faces pale beneath the black rain. He saw the genuine, raw pain in Zimo’s eyes, the profound care that had driven the scholar’s impossible actions. He saw the truth in Zimo's accusations. His knees buckled slightly.
“I… I had no choice,” Mingfeng whispered, his voice hoarse, his pride crumbling before Zimo’s fury. “The realm's survival rested on my shoulders alone.”
“No,” a soft voice breathed, barely audible. Qingshuang. Her eyelids fluttered open, her gaze weak but clear. Her hand, still stained with blood, reached out, not for Zimo, but for the devastated landscape.
A ripple emanated from her. The air, thick with dread and the terror of the defeated army, began to shimmer. A strange, verdant radiance unfurled from her palm, spreading outward. It touched the ground, the broken stones, the stunned soldiers. The collective terror of the ranks, fused with their circulating qi, began to churn, coalescing into a viscous, dark jade liquid.
“The… tea ink,” Zimo murmured, catching the bitter, roasted aroma. She was steeping the collective panic of thousands into an earthen medium, pooling a lake of jade liquor at the foot of the dais.
Qingshuang’s voice was a mere wisp, yet it carried an undeniable strength. “The blade… needs its scabbard, Emperor. A true Dao… is shared.” She then fell silent, her eyes closing, her work complete.
Zimo looked at the ink, then at Mingfeng, who stood before him, humbled, his shoulders slumped. The truth of Master Jinghong’s words, of Qingshuang’s sacrifice, hung heavy in the air. The blade without a scabbard destroys itself. The Sword Dao, in its isolation, was a path to self-annihilation.
Mingfeng met Zimo’s gaze. The arrogance that had driven the Emperor had finally cracked. Above, the azure cataclysm plunged toward them like an open maw, while below, the pool of jade ink churned with the gathered vitality of the realm. He saw Zimo, his brush-hand trembling, his eyes demanding action.
Slowly, deliberately, Zhao Mingfeng raised his hand. A blinding surge of pure white light, the pinnacle of the Sword Dao, erupted from his palm. It was not destructive, but focused and radiant, a torrent of honed sword intent. It streamed, not into the earth, not into the sky, but directly into the tip of Shen Zimo’s ink-stained weasel-hair brush. The ancient bristles glowed with a power that transcended mortal understanding, the Sword Dao flowing into the Dao of Calligraphy, the blade meeting its destined scabbard.
“For the world,” Mingfeng said, his voice firm, resolute, finally free of its tragic burden. “For humanity. Let us rewrite their fate.”
Zimo nodded curtly, pulling air into his chest as the combined currents of blade and brush flooded his meridians. Cradling Qingshuang against his chest, he kicked off from the stone dais, hurtling skyward against the shattered heavens, directly toward the plummeting thunder.
He swung his glowing brush through the jade ink that crested upward behind him, carried on Mingfeng's surging intent. The ink, vibrant and alive, swirled around the tip, eager for its purpose. With the force of a world's despair and a humanity’s stubborn hope, Shen Zimo, the pacifist academic, began to write. His brush moved with blistering speed, tracing an immense glyph across the churning celestial vortex. It was a single, profound stroke, imbued with the combined will of a scholar, an Emperor, and a tea brewer. The stroke cut through the firmament, writing the singular radical that governed all reality: ‘天’ – Heaven.
As the final hook snapped shut, a blinding detonation of white ink and blue thunder engulfed the Taiheng Realm.
